Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow
Large-scale agricultural and hydrological management requires data of terrestrial evaporation (E) and root-zone soil moisture (SM) with high spatial resolution and accuracy. However, neither E nor SM can be directly measured from satellites, and in situ measurements are sparse and insufficient for continuous monitoring over large regions. Consequently, retrieval models and process-based algorithms have been developed during the past decades to indirectly estimate these variables from satellite data, sometimes using in situ measurements, but just for calibration. The existing methods are still not optimized for high-resolution applications, sometimes do not have full continental coverage, or do not meet the required accuracy standards. HERMES will yield a first-of-its-kind, high-resolution, high accuracy, evaporation and root-zone soil moisture dataset across Europe and Africa. It will benefit from (a) the progress in high-resolution remote sensing heralded by the EU Copernicus program, the Sentinel constellation, and the Meteosat second generation sensors, and (b) novel advances in AI and visualization technologies applied to Earth Observation data. HERMES will also bridge towards actual stakeholder requirements in the fields of water and agricultural management.

In this project, the student will have the opportunity to contribute to developing the ALARO regional climate model, particularly regarding its tropical precipitation performance. The ALARO model is one of the canonical configurations of the ALADIN system, embedded in the ACCORD consortium, which brings together 26 National Meteorological Services. It is specifically designed to target the convective grey zone (1 – 10 km grid spacing) and is used for operational numerical weather prediction and regional climate modelling. To evaluate the performance of ALARO, the student will make extensive use of the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility observations in the Amazon (GO Amazon), West Africa (AMMA) and Australia (Darwin, TWP).

About Ghent University, Belgium –Official Website
Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.
In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.
Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
