09 Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stockholm University, Sweden

Candidates are encouraged to submit an individual research plan, and in developing one the candidate is expected to link their proposed research to at least one of the Bolin Centre RTs. During the recruitment process, contacts between the successful candidate(s) and 2-3 Bolin scientists acting as potential mentors of the fellows will be established. If the applicants wish to do so, they can identify potential mentors already in their application, but this is not expected or necessary.

The position will be associated with the project “Nanocarbons for energy-related application”. The project aims to explore and engineering nanocarbon materials for diverse energy applictions, especially for battery.

The position is part of an EU funded Horizon CBE JU project Bio-LUSH. BioLUSH project is a consortium with partners across Europe and aims exploit the cell wall structure of underexplored plant resources (forest residues, marine plants and weeds) in Europe to extract high quality fibres. The project will contribute to the retention of value of the EU’s fibrous biomass and the growth of European fibrous bioeconomy. The program is highly transdisciplinary and selected candidate will be able to collaborate with industries, research institutes and other stakeholders in the different tasks of the project. 

The postdoctoral fellow will be associated with the EU Horizon project REBALANCE (Rebalancing Disruptive Business of Multinational Corporations and Global Value Chains with Democracy and Inclusive Citizenship Processes), which seeks to provide new insights, resources, events, and learning materials to help foster a rebalancing of capitalism and democracy. The postdoctoral fellow will be actively involved in the part of the REBALANCE project based at Stockholm University, which focuses on multinational corporations and EU policies to regulate global industries with regard to human rights, labor rights, environmental impacts, and carbon emissions. This project is led by Tim Bartley, Maria-Therese Gustafsson, and John Murray.

The position is associated with the EFRA project on food saftey with the main goal to deliver the first analytics-enabled, secure-by-design, green data space for AI-enabled food risk prevention. To this end it will utilize NLP (Natural Language Processing), machine learning and explainable methods for knowledge discovery from heterogeneous data sources (including multilingual data). The intention is to build a novel data management and analytics framework, based on three pillars: (1) Data hub – searchable data integration of heterogenous data, (2) Analytic tools – used together with the data hub to distill and combine useful insights regarding food safety from available data, and (3) Data and Analytics marketplace – a single resource for stakeholders in food safety to interact with both data and predictions methods for food safety. The final product will be a set of methods and tools for integrating massive and heterogeneous food safety related data sources, a set of predictive models for learning from these data sources, with emphasis on interpretability and explainability of the models’ rationale for the predictions. A large extent of the data utilized in this project will be in a textual format, hence expertise in the field of NLP is needed for this position.  

Stockholm University (SU) and University of Helsinki (HU) have entered into a strategic partnership where one of the key areas is Baltic Sea research within the Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research (CoastClim; www.coastclim.org/) scientists from both universities explore the links between coastal biodiversity, carbon cycling, and climate feedbacks. To strengthen this joint research initiative, we are now inviting applications for one postdoctoral position focused on coastal microbial ecology in the Baltic Sea.  The selected postdoc will be employed at DEEP at Stockholm University, but is expected to spend at least 50 % of the time at the Baltic Sea Centre (BSC) at Stockholm University. BSC manages the field resources Askö Laboratory and the new research vessel Electra, and coordinates the marine operations from Stockholm University within CoastClim. We are looking for a candidate with experience of and a strong interest in microbial ecology in aquatic ecosystems. 

The employee will work in a team consisting of several senior researchers and three PhD students. The postdoctoral fellow would be part of a research group under the unit for “Contaminant Chemistry” led by Ian Cousins. This postdoctoral project will be funded by the ZeroPM project. ZeroPM is a research project funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program that runs from October 2021 to October 2026. ZeroPM focuses on persistent and mobile substances. Many collaboration opportunities exist within the ZeroPM consortium.
