(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc Fundamentals in µ-milling of steel with ultrashort pulse laser 1.0 FTE (222524)

Ultrashort pulse (USP) laser offers an innovative manufacturing technology that does not require hazardous chemicals. USP laser allows precise and thermal damage-free removal of materials (ablation) for a wide-range of scientific, medical and industrial applications. Precise local energy deposition is one of the main advantages of USP laser that reduce the heat affected zone. These unique properties of ultrashort laser pulses make USP laser ablation a good alternative to other micro-machining processes for ultimate process quality of materials removal. However, its potential is limited by the low ablation rate and the complexity of the associated laser technology. On the other hand, the use of more powerful pulse lasers to increase the ablation rate may result in unwanted effects such as plasma shielding, melting and thermal damage from heat accumulation. Precise micro-milling of steels with ultrashort pulse laser ablation is very challenging but a key enabling technology for many applications. This research project aims understanding the fundamentals in ultrafast and ultra-smooth micro-milling of steel components with USP laser in order to provide in-depth knowledge for industrial applications in smart and precise manufacturing processes.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher Photopharmacology (1.0 FTE) (222539)

Photopharmacology is a rapidly emerging field at the interface of the chemical and medical sciences aiming at high precision therapy. With years of leading research, the University of Groningen is taking the next step, and is aiming for real life applications in the nearby future. The use of light as external trigger allows high precision activation of a drug in space and time in a non-invasive manner, and thus opens fascinating opportunities for precise targeting of e.g. tumors, and bacterial infections. High precision cancer chemotherapy, slow release of pharmaceuticals and increasing drug stability are the first goals the group wishes to take beyond the proof of principle, and push through to a viable prototype.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher Photopharmacology (1.0 FTE) (222517)

Photopharmacology is a rapidly emerging field at the interface of the chemical and medical sciences aiming at high precision therapy. Being among the founding fathers of photopharmacology (together with the Trauner group, currently at UPenn), our expertise in molecular photoswitches and light-driven rotary motors gives us a unique advantage to design the smart medicine of the future. Unlike optogenetics, widely used in neuroscience relying on genetic modification of the organism, the basis for photopharmacology is the design of drugs with intrinsic switchable functions. Specifically, this means that in bioactive molecular components (common pharmaceuticals) designed with intrinsic light-switchable units, the biological activity can be switched on and off with high precision on command using light. The use of light as external trigger allows high precision activation of a drug in space and time in a non-invasive manner. This opens fascinating opportunities for precise targeting of e.g. tumors, and bacterial infections. High precision cancer chemotherapy, fighting bacterial resistance or infectious biofilms are among the prospects for future clinical applications. In a more fundamental scientific perspective control of specific pathways in complex biological networks open numerous opportunities. Our Nobel prize winning research on molecular machines (light-driven chiral molecular switches and motors) introducing directional motion at the nanoscale enabled us to explore the basic principles of photopharmacological agents. We pioneered photoswitchable antibiotics and quorum sensing molecules, interfering with bacterial communication and very recently demonstrated the regulation of the circadian clock in human cells.
