09 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Surrey, England

We are looking for a positive and energetic individual with experience in extracellular vesicles, cell culture, proteomics, RNA seq, bioinformatics, confocal microscopy and FACS. Experience in iPSC generation, culture and differentiation, and electrophysiological methods would constitute an advantage. Competency in data analysis and scientific writing (as evidenced by authorship of peer-reviewed publications) is fundamental. We are looking for an individual able to work and think independently as well as interact positively with colleagues and collaborators. Your PhD could be in Molecular Biology, Biosciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, or related subjects. 

This role is part of a larger collaborative project on trustworthy autonomous robotic systems where the case study is an autonomous “robot boat” for underwater search and crime scene investigation (police and emergency services). You will be working with Dr Alireza Tamaddoni-Nezhad and his research team at the University of Surrey in the area of explainable AI and human-machine learning and reasoning. You will also be collaborating with Dr Alan Hunter and his research team at the University of Bath in the area of marine remote-sensing and autonomy.

We will be achieving this through the logical and probabilistic machine learning approach of Bayesian meta-interpretive learning (BMIL). This approach uses a set of logical statements (i.e., propositions, connectives, etc.) that are akin to human language. In contrast, the popular approach of deep learning uses complex multi-layered neural networks with millions of numerical connections. It is through the logical representation and human-like reasoning of BMIL that it will be possible to encode expert human knowledge into the perceptive world model and deliberative planner of the robot’s artificial intelligence.

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with solid research experience in atomistic materials modelling to carry out density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for batteries. The candidate is expected to be familiar with battery materials including electrolytes, cathode,  and metal anode. The Research Fellow will be part of a large consortium LiSTAR (https://www.listar.ac.uk/), aiming to develop high-performance and long-cycle life Li-sulfur batteries.  The Research Fellow is expected to collaborate closely with partners on the LiSTAR project to combine modelling with experimental for designing better materials for Li-sulfur batteries.  

 The post-holder will work in the group of Dr Qibo Zhang along with Prof Deborah Dunn-Walters’s group and also with other group members in the Immunology Section, School of Biosciences and Medicine.  We are part of the growing and vibrant Section of Immunology located at the beautiful campus of the University of Surrey, close to London. With the use of state-of-the-art facilities, you will perform 3D cell culture and establish proof-of-concept immune organoid for analysis of vaccine-induced T and B cell responses (germinal centre formation, antibody production), including COVID19 and influenza vaccines etc in immune tissues from different aged individuals. The project will involve 3D culture, immunoassays (ELISA, ELISpot), confocal microscopy, flow-cytometry, cytokine array, molecular analysis of immune ageing biomarkers. and B cell receptor repertoire analysis.

The research will focus on the fundamental theory and algorithm development of semantic communication and sensing. The project will provide rich research collaboration opportunities with world-leading research institutes, industry, and regulation bodies. The research will be carried out using a combination of mathematical modelling, computer simulations, machine learning algorithm design and testbed implementation.

These posts will work on an exciting new collaborative research project aiming aim to design, fabricate and implement the novel reflective and transmissive Metasurfaces at sub-7GHz. In this project Metasurfaces will be fabricated and installed in different locations and several measurement campaigns will be performed.

The post holder will be responsible for testing the Privacy Enhancing Technologies. This will include designing and running trials, and analysing data using a range of behavioural measures. You may work with participants experiencing major life transitions and external stakeholder organisations who support and advocate for these vulnerable groups.
