PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Personalized and Automated Transportation

Emerging transport technologies such as automated vehicles (AVs) may hold out great benefits to the urban environment and various travelers, yet AV’s impact on specific groups with unique characteristics has hardly been explored in the literature, not to mention the lack of empirical evidence. The main objective of the proposed study is to fill this gap by exploring the mobility behavior, preferences, and needs of unique groups and to develop optimal automated mobility solutions for them using state-of-the-art simulation tools that closely mimic reality. To achieve such goals, we will analyze unique datasets of individual mobility preferences, design and optimize smart mobility solutions such as automated mobility on demand at the operational level, particularly fleet size with multi-class vehicles, along with an operation system including dispatching, scheduling, and pricing strategies designed specifically for the needs of the studied groups; and compare the AV solutions under different scenarios in a large-scale city and evaluate the expected impact on groups’ mobility and consequently on their quality of life.

(07) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Paid PhD position in underwater communication with hydrophone arrays

Aalto University Acoustics lab has long history of research of utilization of higher-order spherical arrays in airborne sound. Several spatial audio techniques have been developed, many of which have been taken into use widely in the academia and in industry. During last five years the methods have been also transformed to be used also in underwater applications in a project funded by Saab. Several techniques for underwater localization of sources with such arrays have been developed in Aalto. The follow-up project will continue in the field of underwater communications, also in collaboration with Saab.  Underwater communication between man-made devices is a challenging task: radio-frequencies do not propagate in sea water and the acoustic channel is the only available choice. The acoustical channel usually suffers from very low signal-to-noise ratio, and the properties of it also change rapidly in time which is a major problem in signal transmission. In the project, the student would be working in the field of spatial audio implemented with spherical, cylindrical and linear arrays of hydrophones. Using parametric array processing in signal reception should improve tolerance against background noise. In addition, the parametric analysis may potentially give information of the current properties of the acoustic channel, which potentially may lead into more robust methods for signal reception.

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website

Aalto University  is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.

The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.

Aalto University’s operations showcase Finland’s experiment in higher education. The Aalto Design Factory, Aalto Ventures Program and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes), among others, drive the university’s mission for a radical shift towards multidisciplinary learning and have contributed substantially to the emergence of Helsinki as a hotbed for startups.Aaltoes is Europe’s largest and most active student run entrepreneurship community that has founded major concepts such as the Startup Sauna accelerator program and the Slush startup event.

The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.
