PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computer Science within WASP
The research is focused on a problem that is at the heart of the current split in AI between data-based learners and model-based reasoners: the problem of learning models from data, and more generally, the problem of learning representations from data over known formal languages with a known structure and semantics. While these representations are to be learned using deep learning methods, the use of domain-independent target languages for learning is aimed at obtaining representations that generalize and can be reused, and which are more transparent and require less data. In the setting of action and planning, language-based representations have been used to represent general dynamics, general control strategies, and general subgoal structures (intrinsic rewards). See the paper “Target Languages (vs. Inductive Biases) for Learning to Act and Plan” (AAAI 2022) for details (https://arxiv.org/abs/2109.07195).

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Materials Science
LiU participates in a European collaborative project that aims towards development of new materials to protect the fuel in nuclear power plants. These materials include silicon carbide-based composites whose structure is designed at the nanometer level. Your tasks consist of characterizing and understanding the materials, their degradation mechanisms and suggesting improvements of the structure to extend their lifetime. Your primary tool will be advanced electron microscopy to determine structure, composition and chemical bonds at the atomic level.
Deadline : 17 May 2022.

PhD position summary/title: Phd student in Technology and Social Change
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
The PhD student is expected to conduct qualitative research on processes of knowledge production, from an institutional perspective. That means to study and analyse how different forms of knowledge interact with, e.g., habits, practices, rules and organizational conditions. The specific topic of study is open to be formulated in dialogue between PhD student and supervisor.

PhD position summary/title: Phd student in Technology and Social Change
The PhD student is expected to do work within the research project ‘Biomedicine, Clinical Knowledge, and the Humanities in Collaboration: A Novel Epistemology for Radically Interdisciplinary Health Research and Policy-Work on Post-Covid-19 Syndrome’. More specifically, the PhD student will work in relation to the two sub-projects ‘Post-Covid syndrome: Diagnosis and Recovery’ and ‘A Novel Model for Policy-Work’. The PhD student will work with questions around epistemology and knowledge production in policy work around post-covid. For example, this could be studies of how different kinds of knowledge are included or not included in policy processes around post-covid diagnosis, treatment, or rehabilitation. It could also involve studies of socio-cultural and political processes in policy work around post-covid as a new diagnosis. The specific topic of study is open to be formulated in dialogue between PhD student and supervisor, within the larger project framework.
