(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in Environmental Analytical Chemistry, with a focus on non-target screening of PFAS

The postdoctoral researcher will be part of an established team that studies chemical pollution in the environment as well as human exposure to these chemicals. In addition to high-quality accredited analyses and target screening approaches, the group has frequently applied non-target and suspect screening based on high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), combined with both gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Likewise, the group has more than 20 years of experience with the target analyses of PFAS in environmental, food and human samples.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to support this work and relevant expansions, in particular towards fluorine mass balances (including improvement of semi-quantification approaches), generic sample preparation methods and more standardisation of QA/QC. Initiatives to develop related fields are welcome, such as connections with hazard characterisation, big data analyses as well as environmental fate and multisource exposure studies. While the work will focus on a Danish and European pollution situation, connections with the group’s research in the Arctic will be possible.

The current instruments for PFAS determinations include HPLC-MS/MS (for PFAS target analysis), GC-MS and GC-Orbitrap-HRMS (for neutral PFAS), HPLC-Orbitrap-HRMS and HPLC-QToF-HRMS (for non-target screening of ionic PFAS) and Combustion Ion Chromatograph (CIC) for PFAS Total, such as Total Fluorine (TF) and Extractable Organic Fluorine (EOF). Other frequently analysed substances in the group include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), legacy organochlorine and current-use pesticides, brominated flame retardants and biocides. The laboratory is accredited and has a strong focus on QA/QC.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Play in Old Norse Culture

The project investigates the role and function of adult play in ancient Scandinavian worldviews, mindset and behaviour and examines play and playful attitudes as vehicles for sociocultural transformations, innovation and development. The project considers play as a cultural asset that is tightly entangled with values, politics and societal institutions. The project approaches the past by textual means, and the source material consists of Old Norse texts of various genres. The working language of the project is English.

The successful applicant will be responsible for making case analyses in the work package Play, Ceremony and Ritual. You will be expected to investigate play in the context of religious ritual, magic and spirituality and to consider aspects of gender and social status. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to publish the results in English-language articles, at a panel at the Medieval Congress in Leeds in July 2026 and in other dissemination activities.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two postdoctoral fellowships (fixed-term contract) in the research project Locally Crafted Empires (LoCiS), School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University

The LoCiS project investigates the rich but understudied local portrait cultures of ancient Western Asia with the aim of determining how they reflect local and regional entanglements with and responses to different imperial hegemonies. LoCiS aims to reveal new knowledge about intersecting identities on an individual, local and regional level through a long durée perspective with a global historical outlook. The thousands of surviving portraits have not been studied comprehensively – neither diachronically nor in contexts or in cross-regional perspectives. LoCiS aims at offering unprecedented insights into the multilayered narratives of the varied individual experiences in antiquity.

The postdocs will work closely with Professor Rubina Raja and other project members. Tasks include work on the project database and catalogues, producing a monograph, co- and single-authored articles and contributions, organizing conferences, workshops and guest lectures, undertaking research travel. The postdocs will specifically undertake research on locally produced portraits from the region of West Asia from 100 BCE – 500 CE. The more narrowly defined region will be subject to definition together with the project director at the time of a potential interview for the position. Applicants should therefore specify in their application the region(s) within the study area where they believe their strongest competences lie.

We are looking for candidates who are specialised in Classical Archaeology with a focus on Greece and/or the eastern Roman provinces and/or Near Eastern archaeology in the period between 100 BCE – 500 CE and who have a solid research profile and demonstrates wide-ranging knowledge of the archaeology and history of West Asia – here defined that the region from and including Egypt to Anatolia and from the Tigris to the Mediterranean with a focus on visual culture.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in assessing carbon sequestration potential of different wetlands as nature-based solutions under changing climate

The Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University, Denmark, is offering a postdoctoral position in  assessing carbon sequestration potential of wetlands as nature-based solutions under different climate scenarios, starting 15-01-2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The full-time position will be available for a 2-year period.

Wetlands have been well documented as a promising nature-based solution (NBS) due to their potential to act as carbon sinks and regulate hydrology, thereby mitigating the impacts of climate change. Despite growing recognition of their importance, there remains a lack of comprehensive quantitative evidence and understanding of their capacity and cost-effectiveness for carbon sequestration under varying conditions.

You will be part of a large international research project focused on monitoring biodiversity, water resources and management, and carbon dynamics across several newly implemented, restored, or preserved wetland showcases in rural, peri-urban, and urban areas of Europe, spanning five bioclimatic zones. Your task will be to combine multi-source data — including field observations, environmental measurements, and satellite imagery — with mechanistic models to assess carbon sequestration potential in diverse European contexts and provide insights into cost-effective wetland systems for ecosystem adaptation to climate extremes.
