(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Marine microbial environmental genomics

Microorganisms drive biogeochemical cycles and underpin food webs making them essential for the health and functioning of marine ecosystems. At the Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University research focuses on scientific issues important for understanding and managing the Baltic Sea. SeaLab – a joint research venture between the Baltic Sea Centre and the Environmental Genomics group at SciLifeLab – contributes through exploration of the marine microbiome. At SeaLab, we investigate microbial metabolism using gene, transcript and protein inventories coupled to environmental metadata.

This position will focus on microorganisms that produce and consume greenhouse gases (GHGs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the coastal Baltic Sea. While coastal ecosystems have generally been regarded as carbon sinks, recent research has shown that they can also emit methane, nitrous oxide, and underexplored VOCs. Microbial activity is key to these emissions, but we need to understand how different processes are regulated and the extent that microbial metabolism varies over time and space in relation to environmental conditions.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in Ocean Colour Remote Sensing

The position involves research in Ocean Colour remote sensing within the Copernicus program. Ocean Colour data allows for a synoptic analysis of marine and inland waters. Besides assessing the spatial distribution and phenology of phytoplankton blooms it also allows for a deeper understanding of the physiochemical drivers (such as wind speed and light attenuation) of phytoplankton growth and production.  By combining MERIS data (300 m resolution) from the ESA ENVISAT program (2002-2012) and OLCI data (since 2016) from the Copernicus program (Sentinel-3 satellite) we can now derive long term time series of essential climate change variables for climate change analyses, especially when combined with other ocean colour data and/or in situ data as well.

The project will focus on how we can use these techniques for a better understanding of the effects of climate change on phytoplankton phenology in coastal and inland waters, with the Baltic proper, the Bothnian Bay and Lake Vänern as examples. One focus of the project is to identify and validate climate change indicators derived from remote sensing data, and to derive and analyze long-term time series and trends. The researcher will support the PI with data analysis and participate in the preparation of 1-2 research articles which will be planned jointly in the initial stage of the employment. The researcher is expected to help prepare and participate in fieldwork on research vessels.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical Physics and Topological Phenomena

The position involves research in the theory of topological phases in collaboration with Emil J. Bergholtz and other researchers in Stockholm as well as with our collaborators elsewhere. A suitable background is a PhD in theoretical physics specializing in theoretical condensed matter physics, high energy physics or mathematical physics. Special focus is on our two core activities in non-Hermitian topology and fractional Chern insulators.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow in environmental RNA biology (eRNA)

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral scientist to join the Friedländer team which is part of the MBW department and has research activities at SciLifeLab. Our team has recently found RNA molecules to be present in fragmented form in various environmental samples ranging from extinct and ancient animals to consumer food products. These fragments can be detected and analyzed using our specialized wet and dry-lab methods.

The objective of this project is to evolve and adapt these wet-lab methods and apply them to environmental samples to gain new biological insights. The focus will be on food products – for the purpose of ensuring food safety and detecting fraud – but other sample types will also be studied, and the successful applicant will contribute to shaping the research direction. The applicant will work closely with wet and dry-lab researchers from our team in our interdisciplinary environment.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Insect Evolutionary Ecology

The postdoc will contribute to a project examining the role of heat stress on butterfly infertility to answer fundamental questions about the impact of climate change on insect populations. Specific goals are to: 1) examine thermal fertility limits in a comparative phylogenetic context, 2) establish the ecological relevance of these limits by surveying natural populations, 3) quantify adaptive potential of these limits by testing for local adaptation on continental scales and 4) using these data to evaluate the extent that thermal fertility limits and local adaptation improve forecast accuracy of butterfly responses to climate change.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Evolutionary Prediction

The position will be associated with Assistant Professor Lisandro Milocco’s research group located at SciLifeLab (Solna) and the Department of Zoology, Stockholm University. The research group is part of the National Program for Data-driven Life Science (DDLS), generously funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation: www.scilifelab.se/data-driven/

Our group focuses on studying different aspects of evolvability – the ability of organisms to evolve. We are interested in developing computational and mathematical tools to understand and quantify evolvability while exploring its potential applications. In particular, we focus on evolutionary prediction: can we use a deeper understanding of evolvability to predict and, potentially, control evolutionary processes? Read more about our approaches and research themes here: www.scilifelab.se/researchers/lisandro-milocco/

This project leverages the rise of data-driven dynamic modeling—from fluid dynamics to ecosystem studies—to uncover the developmental rules underlying phenotypic variation. The successful postdoctoral fellow will develop and implement an empirical framework that utilizes data-driven algorithms to learn relationships between past and future developmental timepoints from time-series data. Our recent theoretical work suggests that these learned relationships can generalize across conditions, and we will test this using both simulated and available experimental datasets. This role offers a unique opportunity to translate transformative theoretical insights into a practical framework for understanding how new phenotypic variation arises.
