10 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

The current, social-science vacancy is for a post-doc position to assess, ex ante, for the abovementioned applications the societal and technological impacts of CCS and CCU technologies and scenarios, with special emphasis on the impacts of electrochemical conversion options for CO2 in the Netherlands and Western Europe. To obtain a balanced view and examine the transferability of the conclusions across countries and societies, you will compare the European data with data for Zhejiang province in China, obtained via our connection to the Shanghai Institute for Cleantech Innovation and Brazil. Findings are to be translated into design criteria for the further technical development of innovations, so as to promote their successful introduction.

In a one-year ZonMw-funded project, we aim to gain a more detailed understanding of the fight against misinformation during a public health crisis such as the covid-19 pandemic. This project has three parts. Via (reconstructive) interviews with (1) journalists, and (2) intermediaries for so-called vulnerable groups, we aim to uncover how they approached misinformation and communicated about it; and whether they would take on a different approach with the knowledge they have today. In addition, (3) by a content analysis of traditional and social media, we aim to gain a more detailed understanding of which strategies journalists and intermediaries applied during the covid-19 crisis to inform, respectively, the general public and vulnerable groups about misinformation.

The SLICES-PP project will design architecture and infrastructure services for the future research infrastructure on digital technologies including smart infrastructure operation and management, design and validation of new Cloud/Edge/Fog infrastructure, 5G end-to-end slicing including radio and terrestrial network infrastructure, advanced wireless networking, infrastructure and data security and trust management.

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the area of programming languages, formal methods, and distributed systems. Within the Secure Scalable Policy-enforced Distributed Data Processing (SSPDDP) project, the UvA and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) are collaborating on the theory and design of domain-specific software languages for the high-level specification of digitally enforceable contracts, in particular data sharing agreements. Founded on legal primitives, the languages make it possible to connect the formal interpretation of legally binding contracts to the primitives of an execution environment such as the transactions on a blockchain platform and access requests in an access-control system. The goal is to enable the integration and automatic enforcement of high-level contract specification within distributed systems for data exchange and federated data processing.

You will conduct independent research on the predictability of genomic evolution in the context of animal-microbe interactions. The project is situated at the interface of microbiology and evolutionary genomics and is subdivided in two subprojects: Subproject 1: The first subproject aims to predict genetic evolution based on experimental data on standing genetic variation and fitness variation. The project leverages data on recently experimentally evolved populations of the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. In this experiment, C. elegans was exposed to a novel dietary bacterium for 20 generations. You will conduct fitness assays and combine these results with existing genomic data using computational approaches to quantify how well we can predict genetic evolution. Subproject 2: The second subproject aims to assess the repeatability and predictability of microbial evolution in response to predation by C. elegans. You will combine fitness assays and genomic analysis of Escherichia coli strains that have evolved in the presence and absence of C. elegans predation.

Recalling the past brings up memories and emotions in the present. Upon retrieval however, memories can be changed – for better or for worse – either by integrating novel experiences with existing memories (integration), or by actively breaking down such connections (disintegration). However, why memory retrieval leads to integration in some instances and to disintegration at other times is poorly understood, and the consequences of these processes for evoked emotions, are unknown. This undermines the effectiveness of psychotherapies that rely upon retrieval-induced integration. For this project, we seek a highly motivated and qualified PhD student or postdoc. Using tools such as fMRI and psychophysiology, you’ll conduct translational research to gain insight in the conditions and neurobiological mechanisms of (dis)integration of real-life memories, and how this affects symptom changes in emotional memory disorders. To do so, you will further develop variations on paradigms that we have recently developed, suitable to measure central characteristics (e.g., psychophysiological responses, episodic detail, associative memory) of both lab-induced and autobiographical emotional memories. The collected data you’ll analyze using fMRI, multilevel- and network modelling. Ultimately, you’ll write at least three experimental papers (or a doctoral thesis on the basis of at least four experimental papers).
