10 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Twente, Netherlands

The Dynamics based Maintenance group, Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente, The Netherlands has an opening for a postdoc candidate within the project “Engineering for Zero Downtime in Cyber-Physical Systems via Intelligent Diagnostics (ZORRO)”.

To increase the availability and reliability of critical and complex high-tech systems, like machines used in the semiconductor industry or industrial printing machines, intelligent diagnostics to identify faults is of crucial importance. Acoustics-based diagnosis, using an array of microphones, is a promising method to identify faults, as sensing on the moving components in these high tech systems is not possible. The challenge is to localize anomalous sounds, related to faults, in a complex acoustic environment, characterized by moving sound sources and reverberations. Purely relying on physical models describing the acoustics in this kind of environment will result in models too large to be handled and too instable to be solved. Data-driven approaches need to be used in addition to enrich the physics-based models. An experimental set-up to collect relevant acoustic data is available, but needs further development.

The project focusses on a case of one of the participating industrial partners, but a broader collaboration in this national project with the other industrial partners, universities and research institutes is anticipated.

The position is embedded into a large-scale effort between academic groups in the Netherlands and industrial partners to reduce CO2 emissions in steel production using machine learning. You will work on a theoretical and an applied project on data-enhanced physical reduced order models and will act as a data science expert for other consortium partners.

To bring computing power to the edge and to make the cloud sustainable, various paradigms for energy-efficient computing are emerging. These paradigms, for example neuromorphic, wave-based, probabilistic, and in-memory computing, are based on a wide variety of physical processes, materials, architectures, and algorithms. For effective implementation, these aspects need to be mapped, integrated with current technology, and coupled to technological use cases.

In this two-year project, a postdoctoral researcher will join forces with academic and industrial consortium partners to map how emerging computing paradigms can be implemented. The results of the various research projects in the consortium and developments reported in the literature will be monitored and analyzed. Where feasible and opportune, proof-of-principle experiments will be conducted together with various consortium partners. You have a background in hands-on (wafer-scale) device fabrication, preferably based on processing of advanced materials.

At the CPM chair we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the EU-funded FASTER project, which aims to enable the decentralized production of green ammonia; a crucial molecule at the intersection of the energy and food value chains. Green ammonia can act both as a hydrogen carrier for energy applications and as a fertilizer for agriculture, offering a key solution for Europe’s climate and energy transitions.

Conventional ammonia synthesis via the Haber-Bosch process is operated at large scale (over 160 million tons annually worldwide) under high temperatures and pressures, posing scalability and sustainability challenges. FASTER will develop and demonstrate a novel, mild-temperature ammonia synthesis process (TRL4) and assess its performance, techno-economic feasibility, and environmental and social impact. The project aligns closely with the European Green Deal and supports strategic autonomy by fostering collaboration among leading institutions and industry partners across the EU, Switzerland, and the UK.

The NeuBotics Lab at the University of Twente is looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team as part of the ERC Proof of Concept RE-SPINE project. Our mission is to develop a neural-controlled ankle rehabilitation robot to enable post-strokeindividuals regain volitional control of their ankle joint. Ankle joint function restoration is critical to restore physiological gaint patterns in more proximal joints such as knee and hip.

At the XUV Optics group, we are looking for an enthusiastic post-doctoral researcher to strengthen our team in developing multilayers that can “expand and/or shrink” upon application of heat with nm precision. This will require both fundamental understanding on the atomistic processes that take place upon deposition and subsequent heating, in order to predict and tailor the height changes of the surface, as well as a close collaboration with industry (ASML Berlin) to demonstrate that multilayers can meet their demanding specifications.

Our mission is to restore natural gait patterns in individuals with motor impairment (due to stroke, spinal cord injury etc) through real-time neural control of wearable robotic exoskeletons. You will be developing next-generation (low and high-level) control algorithms for wearable exoskeletons that use motor unit biofeedback for locomotion enhancement of post-stroke ndividuals.
