(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  POSTDOC POSITION IN EVOLUTIONARY HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY

Infectious diseases cripple well-being, batter economies, and kill millions annually. These negative consequences can be reduced via nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) – behaviors that reduce the spread of pathogens. A wealth of recent theoretical and empirical work has illuminated how and why disgust intuitively motivates some NPIs, such as avoiding bodily wastes and spoiled foods. However, disgust does little to inhibit transmission via aerosols, respiratory droplets, and fomites – key pathways for the respiratory pathogens that circulate seasonally, have caused recent pandemics, and will cause the pandemics of the future. NONPHARM uses theory and methods from social psychology, evolutionary psychology, health psychology, and behavioral genetics to increase knowledge of how and why people (and do not) engage in NPIs such as handwashing, social isolation while infectious, and creating barriers to respiratory droplets and aerosols.

Postdoc summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION IN CONSUMER BEHAVIOR

The postdoctoral researcher will primarily work together with Prof. Femke van Horen on a grant-funded project focused on the adoption of innovations in general, and the development of a method to assess the relation between visual similarity and liking of (food) innovations (e.g., plant-based meat, lab grown meat), more specifically.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC GROUNDWATER DROUGHT AND ADAPTATION (F/M/X)

We are now searching for a postdoctoral researcher with a groundwater data and modelling background to join our team. You will analyse groundwater level observations to assess the development, duration and recovery of groundwater drought, to quantify the role of climate, subsurface characteristics, vegetation, and water use, and to investigate effects of ongoing and future climate change and changes in water use and land management. You will also apply models to investigate how groundwater-related drought adaptation measures can influence the development and recovery of groundwater drought, to assess short- and long-term (unintended) consequences of these drought adaptation measures on flood risk and other water users, and to investigate future adaptation pathways and their feasibility under different climatic and governance conditions.

Deadline : 10 January 2024

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOCTORAL / JUNIOR RESEARCHER EXPLORING STORYLINES OF DROUGHT-FLOOD EVENTS VIA DATA VISUALISATION AND ART-SCIENCE (F/M/X)

We are now searching for a researcher with a data visualisation and art-science background to join our team. You will combine and visualise our qualitative and quantitative storylines of drought-to-flood events, which are based on rich interview material and system-dynamics modelling in Kenya and Peru, and an analysis of hydroclimatic extremes and document analysis on the global scale. You will develop an interactive website and other (digital and hard copy) versions of the storylines, so that they can be used in the workshops. You will do this together with the PhDs working on the project and with external partners, who can support video-editing and website development.

Deadline : 10 January 2024

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POST-DOC IN BIOPHYICS OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Plants have evolved elaborate feedback mechanisms to protect themselves from excess sunlight, which involve rearrangement and structural dynamics of light-harvesting proteins in the photosynthetic membrane. The candidate will employ advanced time-resolved infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy to assess in vivo protein structural dynamics in photosynthetic membranes, and thereby solve an important puzzle in our understanding of photoprotection in photosynthesis. This project is part of the recent consortium grant Nanoscale Regulators of Photosynthesis, with research partners at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Wageningen University and Research, Leiden University and Groningen University.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC IN QUANTIFYING NATIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS USING ATMOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS

The European research project AVENGERS develops techniques for improving the greenhouse gas emission reports that countries submit annually to the UNFCCC. Currently most country reports are based solely on emission accounting methods based on statistics on economic activities. This project investigates how results of atmospheric inverse modelling can be used to improve national emission inventories, such that they are consistent with observed changes in greenhouse gas abundances in the atmosphere. The international and multi-disciplinary research team brings together scientists and inventory experts from national environmental agencies in Europe.

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
