Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellowship in DUV-based nano(bio)sensing
All-optical nanosizing and sensing has traditionally relied on particle-scattering techniques, which infer nanoparticle characteristics. While effective, these methods lack the ability to measure molecular composition, making it impossible to distinguish target analytes from contaminants, a serious limitation.
Unlocking molecular-level information at the nanoscale would enable accurate, label-free sensing in complex biomedical samples, thus transforming current approaches. To give a few examples, molecularly resolved nanoscopy would allow us to quantify drug loading in nanomedicines, measure nucleic acids in viruses, and monitor nanocatalyst turnover.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Health impact scenarios and storylines for climate extreme events
We offer an exciting postdoc position in an interdisciplinary research project on the health impacts of extreme weather events. Extreme weather events effect several aspects of human life. One critical area of concern is human health. As climate change increases the frequency of many extreme events, understanding the mechanisms behind these effects becomes crucial. However, most studies about climate-related health impacts focus on specific morbidities or mortality, overlooking the fact that health is multidimensional. Such focus overlooks joint and cumulative effects that are important to overall functionality and well-being of people.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position: Commonsense reasoning with multimodal foundation models
While the performance of multimodal foundation models has significantly improved, they lack commonsense reasoning capabilities: they produce contradictory results and contain no mechanisms for abstraction and meaningful collaboration with humans. To address the grand challenge of commonsense reasoning with multimodal foundation models, we will explore methods to enhance their robustness, abstraction, and visual grounding abilities. We will consider a range of cross-modal techniques and neuro-symbolic representations for learning effective abstractions from limited amounts of human-labeled data. Following cognitive principles, we will evaluate these methods on tasks that require commonsense reasoning over space, time, and causality.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc: Knowledge-informed reasoning about the harmfulness of internet memes
Internet memes have emerged as popular communication packages that enable creative expression but may harm individuals, groups, or whole societies. Given their volume, it is essential to develop robust and explainable AI techniques to assist humans in moderating or studying meme harmfulness. Unfortunately, memes are concise, relatable, fluid, and multimodal, and interpreting them depends on background knowledge and cultural views, making harmfulness detection a grand challenge. To address this challenge, we will build on state-of-the-art techniques in computer vision, natural language processing, and neuro-symbolic AI to develop a comprehensive technology that can detect and summarize a meme’s benign or harmful content in terms of situational descriptors: what, why, who is the target and the offender, and an indication of severity. Specifically, we will develop: (i) a novel task and corresponding benchmark that requires transparent and grounded reasoning over harmful memes; (ii) a comprehensive knowledge graph that describes a representative collection of memes with knowledge about relevant events and cultural information, and (iii) a novel reasoning method with higher robustness and explainability.

About The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.
In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.
The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
