Summary/title: PhD Position in Mathematics with a Focus on Extremal Combinatorics
The successful applicant will study problems in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics, as part of Dr. Maryam Sharifzadeh’s project Induced saturation problems for hypergraphs and partially ordered sets (POSets), funded by the Swedish Research Council.
This project is concerned with saturation problems for two classes of combinatorial objects: hypergraphs and posets. For hypergraphs, the aim is to better understand weak saturation, a simpler version of the usual notion of saturation, and to improve what we currently know. On the poset side, the project will involve work on both saturation and non-induced saturation, with the goal of making progress on conjectures about the nature of posets that are hardest to saturate. The work will draw on ideas from extremal combinatorics, set theory and probabilistic methods, and it hopes to clarify how these two settings, hypergraphs and posets, connect through their shared saturation questions.

Summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on gender and language technology
The project focuses on the development of AI methods for enabling the detection and editing of gender biases across cultural contexts (e.g., languages, gendered expectations, imageries) under the leadership of Henrik Björklund, Johanna Björklund, and Loïs Vanhée. This is a critical first step toward mitigating the social harms of large language models and other generative AI systems such as the promotion and preservation of structures of oppression and inequalities based on gender. The task is challenging because it is highly context-dependent, language is ambiguous, and bias signals vary across communities and cultures. The problem is further amplified in low- and medium-resource languages, where data scarcity constrains both measurement and mitigation.
To address these matters, this project will develop culturally informed tools for bias detection in NLP models. Such tools must be capable of operating across local cultural contexts and psychosocial factors. By collaborating with researchers proficient in gender studies and low-resourced languages, you will be able to draw on both the similarities and differences in how bias is expressed across settings. Using this comparative approach you will help design gender-bias detection and editing tools that can be readily adapted to new cultural and linguistic environments.

Summary/title: PhD student in Architecture with focus on Critical Studies and Gender
This PhD project investigates how choreographic and embodied practices can act as tactics of empowerment, resistance, and spatial redefinition. Architectural discourse has often relied on standardized bodily models that mask the diversity of lived, gendered, and capacitated experiences. In response, this project explores how a multiplicity of bodies inhabits and reimagine space through site-specific performance. Attentive to practices that negotiate or unsettle historically gendered modes of visibility in public space, it also engages choreographic approaches that move beyond such binaries, proposing alternative spatial, relational, and aesthetic strategies. Taking as a point of departure the work of choreographers whose practices emerge from situated experiences in urban environments, the project considers how these forms of embodiment challenge historical exclusions and generate new ways of inhabiting and understanding space. Their choreographies foreground spatial dimensions of movement, offering architecture an expanded approach to performance as a mode of spatial and aesthetic knowledge.

Summary/title: 1 – 2 PhD positions in gender studies
Umeå Centre for Gender Studies (UCGS) is announcing one to two PhD positions in gender studies within the framework of The gender research school.
Gender studies is a broad and interdisciplinary field of knowledge, where gender in a wide sense is studied, often in relation to other aspects of power within a social or cultural context. Research in the field spans from the humanities and social sciences to medical and technical-natural sciences.
Doctoral projects in gender studies can be both empirically or theoretically oriented. Within the framework of this position, the doctoral student will have considerable scope to develop their own research project.
Since 2001, The gender research school has offered co-financed doctoral education in collaboration with all faculties at Umeå University. A doctoral position at UCGS entails active participation in The gender research school, a unique and dynamic research training environment currently hosting around twenty doctoral students.

Summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with a focus on Machine Learning
Machine learning is a key technique in many research and development areas, and machine learning accounts for much of the recent success in artificial intelligence. Large-scale machine learning open up for incredible opportunities in many different applications and has gone through a very rapid development in the last few years. Large-scale machine learning models are however notoriously over-confident. With insufficient amounts of data to train them on together with unknown but presumably large prediction uncertainties, their broad application is hindered. This is especially a problem in application areas that require robust and trustworthy solutions, such as in medical applications.
Federated Bayesian learning offers a solution to those problems by allowing multiple participants to train machine learning models collaboratively, without sharing any data. Bayesian models also provide uncertainty estimates in the model and its predictions, allowing the confidence in automated decisions to be evaluated.
The goal of this project is therefore to develop learning algorithms and methods for calibrated Bayesian federated learning for trustworthy collaborative Bayesian learning on data from multiple participants. The project will develop new methods, theory, and algorithms for Bayesian machine learning with applications in e.g., medical image analysis.
The doctoral student position is offered within the machine learning project “The Challenges for Machine Learning in Medical Imaging: Lack of Data and Trust” that is financed by the Swedish Research Council. The project is led by Tommy Löfstedt, docent and associate professor at the Department of Computing Science, Umeå University.

Summary/title: PhD position in Chemistry, with a specialization in geochemistry, Umeå University
The project, which is funded by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten, SSM), focuses on the mineralogy and molecular properties of Swedish smectite-rich minerals, which are of interest as natural analogues to the bentonite barrier in the planned KBS-3 concept for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
The PhD student will develop, apply, and combine theoretical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize, at the molecular level, smectite samples from various Swedish mineral deposits.

Summary/title: PhD position in Medical Science, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
This PhD project is part of a randomized controlled trial that compares a novel treatment approach for depression in young people – Training for Awareness Resilience and Action (TARA) – with standard treatment (ST). The TARA-group was shown to be superior at six months follow-up and the safety profile of TARA was excellent. The following research gaps will be addressed in this PhD project: 1. The clinical effectiveness of TARA compared to ST at long-term follow-up, 2. If and how TARA and ST impact autonomic regulation, 3. cortisol metabolism and 4. biomarkers of stress and neurodegeneration.
The position aims to result in a doctoral degree, and the main task of the doctoral student is to engage in their own doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral courses, journal clubs, and seminars. The doctoral student’s tasks in the TARA-project are to analyse data from the long-term follow-up of the TARA study and to analyse biomarkers for autonomic regulation, cortisol metabolism, neurodegeneration, and neuroprotective factors.
This will be done in collaboration with Uppsala University and Linköping University.
