PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship in History
This PhD scholarship is funded as a significant part of an ARC funded project, “Asterix and the Making of Modern France: The Creation of a National Myth”, conducted by Professor Julie Kalman. This project will undertake a comparative study of the extraordinary popularity of the Asterix comic book series across at least two of the following three case studies: Canada, the US, and the UK, from the 1960s onwards. Drawing on newspaper articles, fan mail, and contemporary scholarly writing, the project will mirror the central questions of the ARC-funded project, regarding the series’ attractions for readers, and the meanings given to the series. This will open up a sociocultural history of the post-war period in these countries. The project will also contrast and compare each case: what resonated with readers in each country in their translated versions, and what can this tell us, both about their own post-war stories, and the books themselves? How did translations transpose meanings into different national contexts? How were jokes translated in order to resonate in different national contexts? This is of particular interest, as the series enjoyed enormous success in the UK and Canada, but not in the US.
Undertaking this PhD as part of a larger project has several advantages. First, the successful candidate will be integrated into an already successful research agenda that has been funded by the Australian Research Council. Second, the candidate will benefit from expert supervision from research leaders in history, and from entering a PhD with a pre-existing structure. Finally, the candidate will benefit from being part of outcomes from the research, which may include co-authored publications (where the candidate’s contributions will be recognised through co-authorship), funded symposia, school-engagement exercises, and future grant applications.

Monash has six globally networked campuses and international alliances in Europe and Asia. The applicant will be based at the Clayton campus in Melbourne. The Arts faculty at Monash is inclusive and vibrant, as is the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies (SOPHIS). The historians are internationally-recognised scholars successful in attracting national and international competitive funding.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship – Gaining a Holistic Understanding of Eating Disorders: Phenotyping and Genotyping Illness
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses characterised by severe disturbances in eating behaviours, which are particularly difficult to treat, with poor treatment outcomes and high relapse rates. However, current treatments are moderately effective at best. Given available therapies are designed to target known core psychopathological features of the illness, the moderate efficacy of existing treatments suggests we do not yet have a full understanding of what is core to these illnesses, nor how best to heal from them. This PhD aims to obtain a comprehensive, integrated, multi-level understanding of mechanisms and features involved in the development and maintenance of eating disorders.
This PhD scholarship is supported by funding from the Australian Eating Disorders Research and Translation Centre (AEDRTC) and will fund the candidate to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The candidate will receive training in, and use a range of psychological, cognitive, and behavioural tools and techniques in both clinical trials and longitudinal studies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD research opportunity -The economics of preventing future health inequalities – Project-specific PhD opportunity in the Centre for Health Economics, Monash Business School
This PhD research opportunity will focus on evaluating the impact of preventative health policies on current and future health inequalities.
Preventative health interventions can affect health inequality because baseline risks, and intervention uptake, effects and adherence vary across groups.
In the context of this PhD research opportunity, interventions of interest include, but are not limited to: screening programs, vaccination, life-style interventions, and preventative medication.
Analysis will utilise best practice in health inequalities measurement, modern econometric techniques, behavioural experiments, and modelling.
This research opportunity will produce policy-relevant, causal estimates of the effects of health preventative interventions on health inequalities.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship – Development of novel Radiotracers for the Fibrosis Detection – PhD scholarship available with an International Team
Fibrosis is a scarring process characterised by the excessive deposition of connective tissue, notably collagen, leading to distorted architecture and function of various vital organs, including the heart, kidney, liver and lung. Progressive fibrotic remodelling often leads to organ malfunction and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Current imaging techniques of fibrosis are indirect and possess substantial limitations, hence the medical need for accurate and sensitive diagnosis is very high. A hallmark of active disease is matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) causing distinct changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM) based on their capacity to cleave structural proteins such as collagens especially collagen IV. Thus, degraded collagens uniquely mark active disease and remodelling of the heart and lung, as they are generated by these potent MMPs that are upregulated during acute pathology.
The development of such a molecular imaging probe for direct and sensitive detection of fibrosis during the early stages of pathology would represent a true breakthrough in the field, enabling early detection and staging of those diseases. New insights into the pathogenesis of fibrotic diseases and the development of drugs for their treatment could be provided, especially taking into consideration the burden of COVID-19 on the lung, kidney and heart.
We are seeking expressions of interest from enthusiastic PhD applicants to join a supportive, vibrant research team. A full PhD scholarship for 3.5 years will be offered to successful candidates (PR or Australian citizen) including $10k for travel to England and 1-3 months spent overseas (England & Germany for training). Depending on the thesis topic, the supervision team may include Dr Karen Alt, Dr Richard Amison (UK), Professor Christoph Hagemeyer, Dr Bianca Jupp and/or additional supervisor(s) with relevant expertise. Topics for PhD theses will be worked out collaboratively between the applicants and the supervision team. There will be ample opportunities for PhD candidates to carve out a research area of their own.
