PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Applied Physics within PRISMAS programme – Synchrotron-based studies of Cr oxidation state in complex matrices for phosphorus recovery

The TEC-lab research environment  (Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory) at Umeå University is looking for an outstanding PhD candidate interested in how the local chemical environment of chromium, Cr, in secondary raw materials like ashes or biochars may impact phosphorus recovery. Cr in fertilizers is regulated both with respect to total concentration and oxidation state as its toxicity depends on its oxidation state. The complex matrix of ash fractions and biochars makes accurate determination of oxidation states for chromium near-impossible with conventional analysis. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment where chemistry, physics, and energy technology meet in advanced material characterization both in laboratory and at synchrotrons. You will be engaged in advanced material characterization of phosphorus-rich ashes and biochars of relevance for resource recovery. You will develop personal skills in X-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, and predictive global modelling of elements in these complex matrices. You will also be responsible for analysis at Max IV Laboratory using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Mathematical Statistics

What are the effects of climate change on the diversity of land birds? How many fur seals remain in Antarctica after breeding season? Do flies transmit the ‘bee’ parasite on flowers during defecation? Statistics is there to answer these big-scale and small-scale questions and to understand the world around us, each other and ourselves. When analyzing the relationships between a response and predictors, it might be natural to assume that some relationships obey certain shape constraints, such as monotonicity and convexity. Shape-constrained generalized additive models (SCAM) provide a general and powerful framework for nonparametric regression modelling with shape constraints, demonstrating their efficacy and practicality in numerous applications. The popularity of SCAMs lies in the attractive balance between applicability and interpretability. However, existing methods do not support models with large data sets, yet these are increasingly invaluable and important as technological advances across science and industry generate vast quantities of data. Moreover, efficient and robust computation is currently possible in the standard exponential family setting.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. student in Medical Science with an orientation towards Psychiatry

We are seeking a PhD student excited to study how the brain regulates feeding behavior. Our group approaches feeding behavior on a molecular, neuronal circuit and behavioral level. We are particularly interested in how the brain integrates emotions, memory and metabolic signaling to encode mental states such as hunger and satiety. As a Ph.D. student in our group you will uncover novel neuro-molecular mechanisms by which the brain influences what we eat and how such mechanisms can be used to treat unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders like anorexia nervosa. We believe in fostering an environment where everyone has the support, freedom, and ability to answer the big questions in neuroscience. Doing your Ph.D. in our group will give you critical insight to why we eat in the way we do and a versatile platform for your future career.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on Machine Learning for Software Security

Our societies rely on computer systems, and increasingly so. Unfortunately, computer systems can be the target of malware. These malicious applications can be complicated pieces of software developed by well-organized criminal gangs or by government agencies to attack anything from private computers and smart phones to critical national infrastructures. There has been an increased interest in adapting and developing the latest machine learning methods for the purpose of malware analysis, and preliminary results are encouraging. The specific goals of this project include to develop novel machine learning methods to improve malware understanding. The doctoral student position is offered within a research project financed by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). The project is a collaboration between Alexandre Bartel, Professor and head of the Software Engineering and Security (SES) group, and Tommy Löfstedt, Docent and Associate Professor and head of the Machine Learning group at the Department of Computing Science, Umeå University.

(09) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with a focus on energy-aware Cloud Computing

We are seeking a PhD student to join the Autonomous Distributed Systems (ADS) Lab at Umeå University (Sweden) to work on research into energy-aware Cloud computing. Cloud computing infrastructures are increasingly distributed, consisting of powerful centralized data centres connected with multiple geographically dispersed Edge nodes. They host Cloud applications, which are typically composed of multiple containerized services that can themselves be distributed and auto-scaled across the Cloud-Edge infrastructure fabric. Working with an existing team of researchers, this project seeks to develop new approaches to modelling and managing resources in a Cloud-Edge system to improve energy-efficiency and/or use of renewable energy. This will be achieved by developing efficient methods to monitor large-scale distributed systems and intelligently place and/or migrate workloads based on a balance between workload requirements, provider requirements, and energy considerations.

(11) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in organic/medicinal chemistry

G-quadruplex DNA are involved in central biological processes such as gene expression. In this project, we want to develop ways to affect G4 DNA structures to explore their functions and to investigate their potential as therapeutic target to regulate disease-causing genes. Research in Erik Chorell’s lab has focused on the development of small molecules that bind and stabilize G-quadruplex DNA. This has generated many compound classes that efficiently bind and stabilize this DNA structure and has further also identified the key factors that drive these interactions. Now, we want to further advance this project and explore G-quadruplex DNA both as drug target and from a basic research perspective using new modalities such as oligonucleotide conjugations. The planned research will be conducted at the Department of Chemistry and will focus on oligonucleotide conjugation but also involve small molecule synthesis and biophysical evaluations. To implement this, we have access to excellent facilities for all types of organic chemistry and biophysical studies with all required instrumentation. In addition, we also have close collaborations with Swedish infrastructures such as SciLifeLab for more detailed studies and Umeå Biotech Incubator AB to take promising ideas forward towards societal use. Finally, we have a friendly and open atmosphere in the lab and between research groups at the department with joint journal clubs, meetings, seminars, and retreats. Combined with established and well-working collaborations within academia and industry, we aim to build an atmosphere that catalyze scientific breakthroughs.
