PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder in the field of constitutional law

  • You work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis within the research group Government & Law. The subject of your PhD thesis is the added value of the Legislative Section of the Belgian Council of State: the black box of constitutional law.

‘[We] need an independent legal service to make it clear that the Constitution or international laws are not a rag of paper’, stated a 2022 Tweet by a future Flemish Minister in response to a Constitutional Court judgment. But what about the Legislative Section of the Belgian Council of State? It has shown itself to be the so-called ‘black box’ of Belgian constitutional law since (1) few people understand how it functions and (2) in order to spot why a rule ‘crashed’ one should consult the Council’s advisory opinion. The project will apply an in-depth legal doctrinal and comparative research into the added value of this judicial body supplemented and enriched by empirical insights via coded advisory opinions and interviews. For more information on the specifically designed project, please contact Prof. dr. Cedric Jenart via [email protected].

PhD position summary/title: PhD in the field of Molecular and Computational Neurogenomics

We are a highly motivated international team of researchers at the Molecular Neurogenomics group (Jordanova Lab) and the Computational Neurobiology group (Malysheva Lab) at the VIB CMN. We are excited to announce a call for a joint PhD student in our labs to work on a challenging project at the interface of neurodegeneration, genomics, computational and systems biology.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) represents the most common genetic disorder of the peripheral nervous system. Patients experience progressive distal muscle weakness and wasting, sensory loss, and skeletal deformities ultimately leaving them severely disabled. This lifelong disorder is currently incurable. The largest protein family implicated in the etiology of CMT are aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARS). Ubiquitous and essential enzymes, ARS catalyse a critical step in protein biosynthesis by charging tRNA with their cognate amino acid. Jordanova Lab reported that dominant mutations in the tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (YARS) cause a clinical variant of CMT and so far six additional cytoplasmic ARS have been implicated in the same pathology.

The overarching goal of this proposal is to understand why and how dysregulation of omnipresent and constantly expressed ARS proteins leads to dying-back neurodegeneration and affects specifically the peripheral neurons (PNs). This neuronal population contains the most polarized cells in our body and their sophisticated morphology and function render them highly susceptible to degeneration. The preliminary data generated in-house as well as the available public data suggest mechanisms involving genetic, epigenetic and chromatin organisation factors governing the cell-type specific response to ARS mutations. Therefore, an integrative genome-wide cis-regulatory network analysis approaches, developed and employed in the Malysheva Lab, are required to reveal these mechanisms.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder analytical toxicology and wastewater-based epidemiology

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of analytical toxicology and wastewater-based epidemiology. The project aims to provide unprecedented insights into the behavior of xenobiotics in influent wastewater, focusing on the distribution between the liquid and solid phase of influent wastewater. To achieve this, innovative analytical workflows will be developed to quantify three model chemicals (THC-COOH, fluoxetine, methadone) and modeling experiments will assess interfacial equilibrium dynamics and partitioning of these compounds between the liquid and solid phase of influent wastewater under different conditions. The knowledge of these modelling experiments will be transferred to a real-life scenario to determine the relevance of distribution of xenobiotics from a wastewater-based epidemiology perspective. Therefore, this project will fill existing knowledge gaps in wastewater-based epidemiology to allow more accurate and reliable spatio-temporal assessment of chemical exposure at the population-scale.
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral scholarship holder signal enhancement strategies for photoelectrochemical sensors for nucleic acid-based sequences

The overall goal of this PhD is the development of strategies to enhance the sensitivity of novel photoelectrochemical biosensors that will pave the way to the construction of affordable, robust, and user-friendly platforms for healthcare applications, i.e. cancer diagnosis and infectious disease diagnostics. Due to the integration of biorecognition elements (e.g. DNA/RNA), electrochemical biosensors are ideally suited for the selective determination of a wide variety of clinically relevant targets. The detection of the biomarkers of interest will be achieved by taking advantage of the cost-effectiveness and sensitive detection provided by photoelectrochemical strategies. Singal enhancement strategies such as hybridization chain reaction and loop-mediated isothermal amplification will be explored. This PhD will contribute to the efforts of getting insight into yet unexplored biosensing and signal amplification strategies.

About University of Antwerp, Belgium –Official Website

The University of Antwerp (Dutch: Universiteit Antwerpen) is a major Belgian university located in the city of Antwerp. The official abbreviation is UAntwerp. The University of Antwerp has about 20,000 students, which makes it the third-largest university in Flanders. The University of Antwerp is characterised by its high standards in education, internationally competitive research and entrepreneurial approach. It was founded in 2003 after the merger of three smaller universities.

The university’s roots go back to Sint-Ignatius Handelshogeschool (Saint-Ignatius School for Higher Education in Commerce) founded by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) in Antwerp in 1852. This was one of the first European business schools to offer formal university degrees. It later opened a Faculty of Literature and Philosophy (including Law) and a Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. It was renamed Universitaire Faculteiten Sint-Ignatius Antwerpen (UFSIA) in the 1960s when the Belgian government granted it university status. In the early 1970s UFSIA joined into a confederation with “Rijksuniversitair Centrum Antwerpen” (RUCA) and “Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen” (UIA), public institutions.
