PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in Salt Stratigraphy and Tectonics for the Energy Transition
There are vacancies for two PhD Research Fellows within Salt Stratigraphy and Tectonics for the Energy Transition at the Department of Earth Science. The positions are for a fixed-term period of three years with the possibility of a 4th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The positions are affiliated with the project “Salt Solutions”, an interdisciplinary project integrating 2D and 3D seismic and well data with state-of-art numerical forward modelling to understand the role of salt basin geometry and intra-salt heterogeneity on salt flow and the internal architecture of deformed salt bodies.
The project is funded by the Trond Mohn Research Foundation and led by Dr Leonardo M. Pichel with co-investigators at the University of Bergen (Profs. Ritske Huismans and Rob Gawthorpe), University of Manchester (Prof. Cathy Hollis), University of Oslo (Prof. Jan Inge Faleide) and Imperial College (Prof. Chris Jackson).

PhD position summary/title: Phd Research Fellow in the Study of Religion (Hebrew Bible/Ancient Forms of Judaism)
The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion invites applications for a PhD position in the Study of Religion focusing on ancient religions commencing 01.01.2026, or as agreed upon. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years.
The PhD position is earmarked for a PhD project on strong, individual commitment in ancient Jewish apocalyptic and prophetic literature in the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple era and visionary-prophetic models and ideals of commitment.
The position is the first set of positions advertised connected to the RADHEART project. In addition to this and another PhD position, three postdoctoral positions will also be advertised. The PhD candidates will thus become a part of a closely collaborating research group that works on individual commitment in radical ancient religion, as well as a large and dynamic research environment at the department focusing on the ancient world. The PhD candidates will get the chance to interact with top scholars in the field and travel on conferences and research stays.

PhD position summary/title: Phd Research fellow in the Study of Religion (Ancient Forms of Christianity)
The project focuses on the role of emotions and embodiment in strong, individual commitment in the ancient world and investigates how emotionally intense, strong religious commitments (i.e., radical habits of the heart) are expressed and cultivated in Jewish and Christian formative traditions across the three axes of textuality, mediality, and practice, from the 6th century BCE to the 6th century CE. The project advances an innovative theoretical framework that combines the aesthetics of religion, experience-oriented anthropology, and forward-oriented philology. The research group will be using perspectives from the aesthetics of religion, experience-oriented anthropology and forward-oriented philological methods.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in Algorithms
Modern theoretical computer science faces a fundamental challenge: the current tools fail to explain the effectiveness of heuristic approaches. This phenomenon is demonstrated by a multitude of examples, ranging from the prevalence of black-box SAT- and ILP-solvers in combinatorial optimization, to the inherent dependence on empirical evaluation found in common machine learning pipelines.
The goal of the project is to advance methods of algorithmic analysis, so that we can understand better which instances of fundamental problems can be solved efficiently with provable guarantees. We will employ rigorous algorithmic and complexity paradigms, in particular the tools of parameterized and fine-grained complexity. Possible research targets include graph-theoretic problems, such as those modelling routing and community identification in networks, as well as problems of fundamental importance to the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in Fast Aerodynamic Models for Offshore Wind Farms by Using Machine Learning
There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow at the Geophysical Institute (GFI). PhD position summary/title: PhD research fellow at the Department of Psychosocial Science
The research project focuses on the mental health needs among the population in Gaza. Given the unpredictable situation in the area, the project will target locally and internationally recruited personnel who play key roles in the humanitarian work while also being exposed to highly demanding situations with risks to their own lives and health. The project will involve adaption of the Problem Management+ (PM+) intervention, where humanitarian workers are trained to provide psychosocial support to the local population and to peer humanitarian workers.
The PhD candidate will be based at the Department of Psychosocial science, but will also have supervision at the Department of Clinical Psychology. The place of work is Bergen, Norway. One or more trips to the region may be required during the fellowship period. The candidate will be part of the Society and Workplace Diversity Research Group.

Moreover, topics related to multilingualism in society are also explored. The PhD candidate’s research project is expected to advance our knowledge in one or more of these fields, focusing on Chinese and/or Japanese, possibly in combination with other languages.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in medicinal chemistry
The PhD position is linked to an interdisciplinary research project aimed at discovering new small organic molecules that can inhibit enzymes important in fatty acid synthesis pathway in bacteria. The development of such inhibitors is considered a promising strategy for the development of new antibiotics.
You will work on the synthesis of inhibitors, which will involve evaluating synthetic feasibility, planning synthesis routes where flexibility will be an important element, and synthesizing small molecular target compounds in addition to participating in the design process. You will be tasked with developing new synthesis routes to identified target compounds and using these to produce compound libraries for further evaluation in various assays. We plan to use the departments laboratory for automated chemistry to optimize synthetic steps (and routes), using machine learning in closed-loop (autonomous) optimizations.
The tasks will be varied, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to developing new solutions in a research environment focused on innovation. You will work at the interface between informatics, chemistry, and biology, and your engagement in the project and contribution to interdisciplinary communication will be important for achieving the research goals. Testing of synthesis products using biochemical assays will be performed by other project collaborators as well as external partners.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellowship in archaeology at the University of Bergen
The PhD research fellowship will be linked to the interdisciplinary research group Medieval history – religion and everyday life, which has its focus and interest in church organization, including monasteries and hospitals, within an interdisciplinary context and by using a variety of sources. The group is also interested in religious practices in the Middle Ages, and the transition from a pagan to a Christian society. The PhD research fellowship will focus on the materiality of Christianity and its physical remains within the Norwegian territory, but with the possibility for studying this in a larger comparative context. We are looking for an archaeologist who would like to develop a project related to one or more of the following topics:
- The Christianization of Norway and how this has manifested itself and affected landscape and society.
- The material remains of churches/monasteries/hospitals and their significance in society, both locally and regionally (buildings, building materials and other physical traces such as burials, documents etc.).
- Religiosity and everyday life in the Middle Ages reflected through a wide range of different types of source materials.

The EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network for Climate-Tectonics Interactions (INITIATE, https://www.initiate-dn.eu/) comprises thirteen PhD projects. INITIATE focuses on training early-career researchers to understand how climate and tectonics interact across various spatial and temporal scales. The goal is to develop solutions for georesources (natural gas, geothermal, water), sub-surface storage (hydrogen, carbon, and nuclear waste), and geohazards (landslides, debris flows, and active faulting). The program collaborates with 9 European Institutes, Academic partners, and 7 Companies actively involved in sustainable georesources, geohazards, and the environment. Additionally, entrepreneurial skills are integrated into the training program to prepare doctoral candidates for careers in industry or academia. Each doctoral candidate is linked to a second academic partner to complement and broaden their scientific training and to a dedicated industry partner to acquire industry-relevant skills.
