Duke University and North Carolina State University (NC State) invite applications for a full-time Postdoc Associate to conduct research on causal inference and analytic methods for data integration, with a focus on innovative statistical methods that boost the efficiency and robustness of clinical trials by incorporating real-world data and taking into account hidden biases.
A recent FDA U01 grant and other funding sources will fund the position. The position will be primarily based in the Department of Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Duke University School of Medicine, under the supervision of Dr. Xiaofei Wang. The Postdoc Associate will also work closely with Dr. Shu Yang from the Department of Statistics at NC State and other clinical and methodology investigators from Duke University, Brown University, and Eli Lilly & Company.
Under the guidance of the PIs, co-investigators, and collaborators, the Postdoc Associate will be responsible for developing new statistical methods to empower clinical trials by harnessing external historical controls or another type of auxiliary information from existing clinical trials or real-world data.
The Postdoc Associate will use analytic and Monte Carlo methods to compare the new designs and techniques with existing ones in binary, continuous, and time-to-event outcomes. The Postdoc Associate will help develop R/SAS software for the proposed statistical methods and also work closely with all project investigators to extract relevant data from existing clinical trials, extensive observational studies, or population-based databases from multiple rare and common disease areas, including Alzheimer’s, brain tumors, and lung cancers.
The Postdoc Associate will attend the study team’s regular face-to-face or virtual meetings and the meetings with the FDA. We expect the Postdoc Associate to be the leading author or a co-author on statistical or medical publications and to disseminate research findings at professional conferences.

A postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Dou lab at Duke University in the Department of Integrative Immunobiology. The Dou Lab is a newly established laboratory studying the genetic pathways and mechanisms underlying autoimmunity from a lncRNA and epigenetic gene regulation perspective. We utilize biochemical assays, tissue culture, mouse transplantation & disease modeling experiments, FACS/flow cytometry, and single cell multiomics among other assays to resolve the role of lncRNAs, such as Xist, in establishing, maintaining, and disrupting immune tolerance.
The successful candidate will be expected to work both independently and as part of a team and positively contribute to a highly collaborative environment. Specific projects pertaining to this position include defining and mapping the critical gene and cellular networks by which the Xist lncRNA ribonucleoprotein particles (RNPs) promote autoimmune diseases (see Dou et al., Cell 2024, for more background). This work will consist of wet lab, mouse models, and translational research experiments involving patient samples. Postdocs in the Dou lab are also expected to assist with graduate student training and mentorship, maintain good communication with lab members, and present research findings at scientific meetings. The David Lab at Duke University (www.ladlab.org) is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to join an established research group developing and applying DNA sequencing and computational approaches to understand the interconnections between nutrition, health, food systems, and society. Our lab has pioneered genomics techniques that objectively track dietary intake across hundreds of plant and animal species, generating standardized data that works effectively across diverse languages and cultural contexts while eliminating traditional barriers of recall bias. These methods are being deployed in populations across North Carolina and globally, yielding insights into dietary patterns, disease risk, and socioeconomic determinants of health.
We are particularly interested in a candidate who could contribute to either or both of these research directions:
- Expanding a major initiative to analyze global dietary patterns through DNA sequencing of biospecimens, building on our lab’s established methodologies and international collaborations.
- Developing novel computational tools that use recent advances in artificial intelligence to automate and enhance bioinformatic analyses.
These projects are supported by awards from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the National Institutes of Health, the Gerber Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, and Schmidt Futures.

The Duke Transdisciplinary Otolaryngology Research, Community Health and Equity (Duke TORCHE) Lab in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in cancer epidemiology. Duke TORCHE is a team-based, transdisciplinary lab that uses population lens in investigating cancer prevention, from primary to tertiary prevention and cancer health outcomes. Across this spectrum, we investigate head and neck cancer prevention through risk mitigation, early detection, surveillance, control, survivorship, quality of life, health disparities and social determinants of health. Our projects are both US-based and international, and given our transdisciplinary focus, our projects are diverse; with exciting ongoing grant-funded and pre- funded projects that include big-data, population health studies, mental health aspects of head and neck cancer outcomes, human papillomavirus (HPV), HPV vaccine and oropharyngeal cancer, and genetic and biological basis for disparities in head and neck cancer.
