(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoc position in the field of process monitoring (a)

  • You have completed a PhD in the field of physics, engineering, material science, or other close disciplines
  • You are willing to collaborate in a multi-discipline team with other researchers of the lab of Advanced Materials Processing but also with EPFL and industrial partners
  • Mandatory requirement: Possesses hands-on experience in coding, signal processing, and deep learning frameworks
  • Mandatory requirement: Willingness to carry out experimental laboratory work, e.g. sensorizing these processes using acoustic and optical detectors to capture their transformations
  • Nice to have: Experience in laser based materials processing
  • Additionally, aiming to advance expertise in prognostics and pattern recognition, particularly within the domain of tribology (triboinformatics), to evaluate the ageing process in tribological contacts
  • You have experience in supervising and/or coaching PhD or master students
  • Experience in preparing scientific reports (deliverables) and publishing in scientific journals
  • Excellent knowledge of English: written and oral

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc in material science to develop laser welding applications

We are searching for candidates holding a PhD in material science or physics (preferably with the background in laser physics or photonics related fields). You are motivated and curious about new physical phenomena of laser/beam-matter interactions, you are ready to discover new horizons in laser processing and to bring your ideas to the technology level, you have a background and/or you know materials analysis methods/tools (i.e. spectroscopy, light/electron microscopy, sample preparation etc.). The knowledge of sensors, optics, electronics and hands on metal laser processing is an advantage. Excellent skills in both, verbal and written scientific communication in English are mandatory. Mastering German and/or French are helpful but not mandatory.

This position is linked to the activities of the Innosuisse Flagship project WISER (www.wiser-climate.com), which aims to develop a digital ecosystem that can streamline validation and translation of greenhouse gas emission factors for various assessments. Within this project, you would be expected to work, in collaboration with other researchers, on the:
  • Development of a data repository and its related Data Management Plan (DMP) 
  • Definition of ontologies for environmental data and assessment standards 
  • Proposition of novel solutions to define the uncertainty on input data
  • Management of activities for a part of the WISER Flagship project

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Musculoskeletal Structural Imaging

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will play a key role in enhancing the accuracy of clinical data using advanced 3D bio-histology methods. You will focus in gaining new insights into the degenerative processes of the spine, as well as investigating the role of soft tissues in the etiology and progression of spinal stenosis. A critical aspect of this project is the use of advanced X-ray analysis tools, including micro and nano X-ray tomography, as well as the application of image processing and analysis techniques and the correlation of 3D histomorphological findings with biomechanical behavior. You will also collaborate in developing expertise in integrating dynamic biplane radiographic imaging (DBRI) with conventional medical imaging techniques, emphasizing musculoskeletal biodynamics, and in the transition from small sample studies to a large dataset approach.

Novel versatile bio-based polymeric materials with enhanced solubility are developed and processed into various filter prototypes. The aim is to reduce and replace currently employed fossil-based polymers, as well as environmentally/health hazardous solvents in wet processing, with sustainable alternatives. A comprehensive thermo-mechanical and physico-chemical analysis will be conducted to understand the intrinsic properties of the filter composite and ensure detailed specifications for their application. Finally, filtration efficiency, surface properties and degradation behavior will determine the possible target industries.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Scientist or PostDoc in cheminformatics

Within TSL, the Environmental Risk Assessment and Management Group (ERAM), is looking for a Scientist or a PostDoc responsible for developing and applying a toolbox for open data on the chemical and material uses in the frame of the ETH Domain project OpenChemUses and the Horizon 2020 project “Zero Pollution of Persistent, Mobile Substances (ZeroPM).” OpenChemUses belongs to the Open Research Data initiative, with the aim to enable and engage the wide scientific and regulatory communities to work towards open FAIR data on the uses of chemicals and materials by developing and disseminating a “big-data” toolbox that address both existing and future use reporting. The ZeroPM project will establish an evidencebased multilevel framework to guide policy, technological innovation, and market incentives to minimize use, emissions and pollution of persistent and mobile substances to the environment. The overall goal of the work performed at Empa is to build databases of chemicals and materials on the global market towards better understanding of their uses and fate in the technosphere. The project implementation will be achieved in close collabora-tion with the project partners, including IBM Research Europe, the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and the University of Luxembourg.

We are looking for a postdoc motivated to contribute to the development of thin-film photovoltaic devices based on the CIGS technology. As part of a Horizon Europe collaborative project, the researcher is responsible for the fabrication and characterization of high performance solar cells with bifaciality or back reflectors, and explore possibilities for alternative passivation contacts layers. The researcher will validate the developments with demonstration of interconnection and mini-modules devices. Upon mutual interest the responsibilities will be extended to the exploration of new materials, processing methods and device applications.
