(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral/Graduate student positions in structural biology/chemical biology/virology

The research of the group is focused on understanding how protein complexes organise mitochondrial membranes in protozoan parasites and when disrupted by human mitochondrial disorders. The successful applicant will work on the structural and functional characterisation of protein complexes involved in mitochondrial energy conversion and translation in protozoan parasites using protein biochemistry, single-particle cryo-EM and in-situ cryo-electron tomography with subtomogram averaging. Specifically, the project is aimed at visualisation of inner-membrane architecture and characterising parasite-specific modulation of membrane biogenesis. The candidate will also have the opportunity to study the structural basis for inhibition of mitochondrial translation in Toxoplasma gondii in collaboration with leading expert Prof. Lilach Sheiner (University of Glasgow). (07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in Thermochronology / Data inversion

The selected applicant will work as a part of the research project “EXploiting Thermochronometer sensitivity to RAdiation damage to quantify rates of Craton exhumation through Time (EXTRACT)” funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project aims to quantify long-term rates of craton exhumation using thermochronological analyses of bedrock samples collected at a variety of study sites across Finland.Recent research presents contrasting views on the burial and exhumation history of Fennoscandia, suggesting exhumation may be continuous and extremely slow or punctuated with periods of burial and removal of kilometres of sediment. The project will take advantage of the changes in temperature sensitivity of certain thermochronometers resulting from exposure to natural radiation over time in combination with newly developed inverse numerical modelling software to quantify rates of exhumation across the Fennoscandian shield. The new ages and exhumation rate calculations will be used to explore a variety of possible drivers of burial and exhumation and whether it is possible to measure rates of evolution of various landscape features.

The focus of this postdoctoral researcher position is to contribute to developing software for thermochronometer age interpretation and data inversion. The postdoctoral researcher will work with the Tc1D software (https://github.com/HUGG/TC1D/), developed by the Helsinki University Geodynamics Group, to implement methods for simultaneous inversion of multiple single-crystal ages from bedrock samples to delineate possible cooling histories. In addition, they will have opportunities to link data interpretations to geodynamic models to explore possible drivers of cooling and exhumation recorded in the project age data (and possibly other datasets from similar tectonic settings).

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Data Science/Evolutionary Biology

The postdoctoral researcher will join the project “PhenoBees: a knowledgebase and integrative approach for studying the evolution of morphological traits in bees” funded by the Research Council of Finland.

The main goal of the project is to develop a semantic data workflow to integrate comparative information from different phylogenetic datasets and address hypotheses about the evolution of the mouthparts of bees. The research will result in a knowledgebase of phenotypic traits of bees (PhenoBees) and new tools to analyze comparative semantic data.

The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Diego S. Porto (https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/persons/diego-sasso-portohttps://diegosasso.github.io/) to develop a workflow for processing and analyzing comparative phenotypic data employing a common framework based on semantic data and computational ontologies. The workflow will be a core component in the development of the PhenoBees knowledgebase (for more details, see: https://github.com/diegosasso/PhenoBees/wiki).

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher on Queer perspectives for just sustainability transformations

This position is part of an ERC Consolidator Grant awarded to Associate Professor Guido Caniglia (Principal Investigator) for the project: “Whose sustainability? Understanding and redefining just sustainability transformations from disability and queer perspectives” (WEIRD) (see further information below).
By foregrounding and leveraging disability and queer perspectives around environmental sustainability, WEIRD aims to (a) critically appraise the way in which we usually think about sustainability transformations, (b) empirically understand how people with disability and from gender and sexual minorities are enacting and prefiguring alternative, just, and more environmentally sustainable futures, and (b) creatively redefine and generate new theories of justice in sustainability transformations (see: TOPIC and OBJECTIVES below for more details). The research design of the project is organized in two main tracks: the first looking at the intersection of environmental sustainability and disability and the second investigating the intersection of environmental sustainability and queer (see: APPROACH AND RESEARCH DESIGN below for more details).

Deadline :  October 31, 2024.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher on Philosophy of Loneliness

The research project Philosophy of Loneliness: Phenomenological Inquiries analyzes loneliness through philosophical means. Today, loneliness is recognized as a serious social problem and a specific form of emotional distress, studied within a multidisciplinary field of research. However, the renewed interest among philosophers in loneliness has brought to light the complexity and diversity of the phenomenon. Some researchers have defined loneliness as an emotional experience of absence, others as an existential feeling, and some as an overarching experiential structure that frames the possibilities of perceiving oneself, others, and one’s lived reality. In addition, critical approaches have emphasized the importance of shifting the focus from the individual to social structures and harmful environments that contribute to loneliness.
The Philosophy of Loneliness project develops a new research paradigm at the intersection of philosophical studies of loneliness, critical phenomenology, and the philosophy of emotion. This framework is particularly useful for analyzing how experiences of loneliness are shaped by social interactions. The project addresses questions such as: In what sense is loneliness a socially embedded phenomenon? How does loneliness emerge in specific types of interaction? How are socially shaped, normative expectations of relationships present in experiences of loneliness? In this context, the project also explores the experiential links between loneliness and antagonistic emotions such as anger, misogyny, and hatred. What types of emotional environments and social dynamics are involved when loneliness accumulates into hostile emotions? The developed framework thus challenges individualistic conceptions of loneliness and promotes more nuanced, critical ways of understanding and analyzing the phenomenon.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.

Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
