Spread the love

NTNU has multiple fully funded PhD position, has a main profile in science and technology, a variety of programmes of professional study, and great academic breadth that also includes the humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine, health sciences, educational science, architecture, entrepreneurship, art disciplines and artistic activities.

(01) Fully Funded PhD Position:

Summary of PhD scholarship: We welcome 3 PhD candidates to join the Machado lab during Spring/Summer 2021. We are a computational biology lab working to unlock the potential of microbes to address multiple societal challenges. One of the goals of our group is to understand how microbes work together as communities and use this knowledge to re-engineer natural communities for multiple biotechnological applications. We also try to understand the underlying principles that control microbial metabolism at the single-species level. We take an interdisciplinary approach that brings together different topics including mathematical modelling, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and microbial ecology.

(02) Fully Funded PhD Position:

Summary of PhD scholarship: The PhD position is focused on distinct but related fields of research within the field of Visual appearance measurement and understanding. The concept of visual appearance is currently far from fully understood, neither from the metrological nor perceptual point of view. Research ranging from fundamental aspects to high-impact applications in emerging fields such as 3D printing, material appearance and product design is thus needed in this topic. The PhD candidate in this position is expected to work towards Visual Appearance Capture and Modeling of Materials with Complex Reflectance Properties.

(03) Fully Funded PhD Position:

Summary of PhD scholarship: The aim of this project is improve early detection and understanding of failures of bearings using artificial intelligence using acoustic data. Bearings are critical components in rotating machines including wind turbines, compressors, engines and many others. Acoustic Emission (AE) is a modern ultrasonic technique for monitoring function of bearings, and can pick up signals from early damage from a variety of wear processes. In this project, we will utilise high-quality data that will be acquired under controlled conditions in our own lab, using our own test rigs with AE monitoring. The successful candidate will apply AI techniques to this data, including deep learning, in order to detect early signs of failure in these lab conditions and distinguish different wear mechanisms.

(08) Fully Funded PhD Position:

Summary of PhD scholarship: This project aims at developing and implementing a method for deciding the optimal timing for involvement of contractor competence in infrastructure projects. Five case studies are pilots for implementing the method for involving contractors with the right competence for the right tasks at the right time. One of the purposes of Optimaltid is to develop knowledge about the effects of involving contractors early in project development. First, the PhD candidate shall develop indicators for measurement of value creation for society, user effects and project performance. Second, the PhD candidate shall measure the effects with these indicators. The research will be mainly quantitative but combined with qualitative research methods where appropriate.
