PhD position summary/title: Mechanisms of Interoception and Stress in Medically Unexplained Symptoms

Throughout history, the interrelatedness of mind and body has been known to physicians and patients for millennia. Despite this, treating conditions that involve complicated iterations of this relationship has proved difficult and continues to constitute a barrier to the effective care of many patients in the medical system. One contributing factor is that many physicians and mental health professionals still have a dichotomous view of medical conditions as belonging to either pathologies of the “body” or of the “mind” .Medically Unexplained Symptoms refers to physical symptoms or conditions that do not have an identifiable organic cause or clear disease classification. Multiple psychological and biomedical theories have been proposed to explain MUS, highlighting dysfunctional stress responses across various physiological axes (such as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, inflammatory responses, and cardiovascular responses) and interoceptive dysregulation. The knowledge regarding the interaction between these mechanisms is still incomplete. Existing research often focuses on a single mechanism, stress test, physiological stress axis, or a specific MUS condition, leading to fragmented understanding.The overall aim of this project is to investigate mechanisms of MUS by means of multimodal data, by combining MRI, EEG and ECG, and behavioural paradigms which will aim to explore Interoceptive mechanisms and attentional biases. We will use an ’emotional stress induction’ procedure, to explore Interoception, central brain networks and attentional bias before and during emotional stress.The PhD student will play a crucial role in conducting in-depth research on the interplay between mind and body in conditions like Medically Unexplained Symptoms. Their responsibilities will include:- Conducting a comprehensive review of existing literature on MUS, related psychological and biomedical theories, and multimodal data research methods.- Assisting in the design and development of experimental protocols, particularly those involving MRI, EEG, and ECG data collection, as well as behavioural paradigms for exploring interoceptive mechanisms and attentional biases.- collecting and analysing multimodal data from study participants. This may involve operating MRI and EEG equipment, processing, and interpreting data- Preparing research papers and reports based on the findings of the study for publication in scientific journals and conferences.The PhD student’s work will be critical in advancing our understanding of MUS and may potentially contribute to the development of more effective treatment approaches for patients with these conditions. The project offers an exciting opportunity for the student to gain valuable research experience and make meaningful contributions to the field of medical science and patient care. Prospective PhD students with a background in Neuroscience, Psychology, or Neuroimaging are strongly encouraged to apply for the project. However, having this specific background is not an absolute requirement for consideration. The selection process will involve an interview with the Supervisor, during which candidates will have the opportunity to showcase their enthusiasm and interest in the topic of the project.

PhD position summary/title: BCAST/ Investigation of deformation modes in the development of manufacturing-induced property enhanced AA6xxx series Aluminium Alloys

This project is in partnership with Constellium who are leading the way in lightweighting the future generations of sustainable vehicles by the development of high strength AA6xxx series aluminium extrusion alloys, with tensile yield strength (Rp0.2) above 400MPa and >10% elongation. Innovative thermomechanical processing routes have been developed to achieve the best combinations of strength, ductility and crack resistance and further reduce weight. The process involves a pre-aging step carried out after extrusion and quenching followed by a plastic deformation processing step and subsequently a post-deformation artificial ageing. The deformation process increases dislocation density by interaction with the precipitates formed during pre-ageing.

We are looking for someone to drive forward the development of the thermomechanical processing technique by investigating the affect different deformation modes (e.g. stretching, electromagnetic pulse forming, cycle deformation, etc.) have on the final mechanical properties. In particular how forming processes used in the manufacturing of complex components can be utilized to induce beneficial mechanical property increases.

This research aims to develop photocathodes based on metal oxide nanomaterials as cathodes in Zinc ion capacitors. PhD position summary/title: Heat transfer in liquid spraying systems

The project is in an exciting field at the forefront of research in spray cooling techniques for high heat flux applications. It involves advanced fundamental experimental heat transfer research. The successful candidate will be based at Brunel University London, but will be part of a team working with academics and researchers at Imperial College London, the University of Edinburgh and industrial partners.

The research carried out by the successful applicant will start with the setting up of an experimental facility, followed by a systematic study of single and two-phase spray cooling. The project will include an assessment of the effect of fluid properties, spray nozzle diameter, height-surface area ratio, volume flow rate and surface characteristics on possible heat transfer rates from the area to be cooled. The heat flux to be dissipated and the degree of superheat (difference between the surface and the spray fluid temperature) will be gradually increased to study transition from single-phase to two-phase heat transfer in the area covered by the spray. Flow visualization experiments will also be carried out with high-speed, high resolution cameras. Our results will be compared with the experimental and modelling results obtained by Imperial and Edinburgh.

PhD position summary/title: Future Aerospace Structures Testing using Dynamic Similitude

The need to conduct experimental tests in engineering applications is often unavoidable, where the successful design and analysis of new dynamical engineering systems are broadly dependent on many investigations conducted through theoretical, computational and experimental verifications. The experimental observation of phenomena also aids the development and understanding of scientific laws. However, the experimental testing of dynamical systems can be challenging due to high costs and the lack of experimental resources. Even when ample resources are afforded, it could still be very challenging or impractical to conduct tests due to uncontrollable factors, while for large and oversized systems, creating the actual working conditions for testing the prototype can be very time-consuming or impossible.

This research is focused on the development of future aerospace testing using spatial and temporal scaling of the solid continuum. The recent work by the research team on dynamic similitude will be further developed. The multidisciplinary project will investigate the multi-scale, multi-physics numerical modelling of typical aerospace structures. This research will use and further develop in-house FE and CFD solvers in the development of the similitude model. The project will also focus on the fabrication and experimental testing of aerospace structures.
