PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Network Security for Distributed AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has gradually become a cornerstone of modern life. Its success depends on immense computational effort and extended training times to produce sophisticated models. To handle the scale of these models, distributed AI training has emerged as the standard approach, which utilizes thousands of high-performance devices within a data center to collaboratively process tasks. When they are even more complex, the training infrastructure must eventually scale beyond a single data center, requiring communication between multiple data centers over Wide Area Networks or the Internet. Such communication exposes the training process to several network threats, such as DDoS attacks, traffic hijacking, and traffic analysis. While these risks are well-studied in existing literature, their impacts on distributed AI training, unfortunately, remain largely unexplored. This project envisions Bifröst, secure networks built for distributed AI training. Our objectives include identifying novel network attacks against distributed AI training systems. Furthermore, we aim to develop a measurement framework to assess the impact of such attacks on training performance, adversary costs, and model accuracy. Our ultimate goal is to design a generalized, cross-layer defense framework that integrates network-level mitigation and application-level optimization to comprehensively protect distributed AI training from network threats while maintaining competitive performance.

PhD position summary/title: Postdoc in Hydrogen Mixing and Combustion
The aim of this two-year project is to validate and further develop advanced numerical models (originally developed at Chalmers) for turbulent hydrogen mixing and combustion. Optical and laser-based diagnostics will be used on well-defined reference cases to deepen the understanding of hydrogen’s mixing and reactivity.
Numerical work will involve established software tools, such as:
- CHEMKIN-PRO for steady one-dimensional simulations of laminar flames with detailed chemistry.
- CONVERGE for unsteady three-dimensional simulations of turbulent reacting flows.
A novel aspect of the project is the use of highly perturbed laminar flame simulations to inform CFD modelling of turbulent combustion in lean hydrogen-air mixtures.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in circularity and habitat value in urban transformation
The doctoral student will carry out a large part of the research project “Rethinking urban planning and transformation in co-creation: Towards a framework for calculation of habitat value for an equitable, resource efficient, and circular built living environment”, funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas.
The project aims to develop knowledge and a methodology on how to better utilize, broaden, and develop existing socio-economic calculations in detailed planning. It explores how municipalities can improve the design and care of cities’ living environment.
Our starting point is that habitat value—existing qualities of a place—cannot be bought or sold, but only managed and refined in co-creation with inhabitants. The long-term goal is to enable structural changes in land use economy within municipal spatial planning to support the transition from a linear to a circular built environment, and to shift from new construction to transformation and renovation.
The project adopts a practice-based, transdisciplinary approach, bringing together academia, the public sector, and a collaborative arena. It applies the New European Bauhaus principles: sustainable, beautiful, and together. The framework is iteratively developed, and four cases in Gothenburg cover various circularity perspectives of the built environment, ensuring robustness and scalability:
- Resilience of buildings (offices to residential use)
- Agricultural ecosystems (urban farming)
- Co-creation of cultural values (industrial site into art/culture hub)
- Education and circular systems (reuse of material for school)

Chalmers University of Technology is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural sciences, architecture, mathematics, maritime and other management areas.
The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an “industrial school”. Chalmers was run as a private institution until 1937, when the institute became a state-owned university. In 1994, the school was incorporated as an aktiebolag under the control of the Swedish Government, the faculty and the Student Union. Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.
