PhD position summary/title: PhD student »Parameter identification for soil-tool interaction simulation«
The focus of this PhD project is the development, implementation and validation of an adequate automated parameterization algorithm for DEM-based soil simulation and soil-tool interaction.
For this purpose, different soil mechanics laboratory tests will be investigated and analyzed with respect to their suitability for the parameterization of the soil-tool interaction, also for different physical contact laws. Based on this, different nonlinear optimization approaches will be implemented and analyzed with respect to accuracy, stability and performance. Thereby, the appropriate and problem-related choice of the optimization objective is a crucial aspect of the optimization procedure.

PhD position summary/title: PhD thesis »Micromechanical behavior of PVK systems under particle bombardment«
The Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP in Halle (Saale) is a joint facility of the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and conducts applied research in the fields of silicon crystallization, wafer production, solar cell characterization and module technology. It develops new technologies, manufacturing processes and product concepts along the entire photovoltaic value chain. The focus is on the reliability assessment of solar cells and PV modules under laboratory and operating conditions as well as the electrical, optical, mechanical and microstructural characterization of materials and components. Based on the understanding of failure mechanisms, measurement methods, devices and production processes for components and materials with increased reliability are developed.
For our research group »PV Modules, Components and Manufacturing« we are looking for a phd student at our site in Halle (Saale) as soon as possible. The group uses a combination of methods from materials science, component and PV module testing and FE modeling. This enables comprehensive and well-founded support for the development of solar cells and PV modules and their components from a single source. The combination of processes, material and data analysis of the solar cell, electrical connection technologies, PV module production and detailed characterization provides a holistic understanding of reliability. This is supported by specific and tailored accelerated ageing test protocols for PV modules, components and materials, which are continuously optimized utilizing real Mission Profile MP. The unique combination of macro- and microstructure analysis enables precise defect localization and a detailed understanding of the interactions in the PV module.

PhD position summary/title: PhD thesis in Therapeutic advancements for Huntington’s disease (HD)
Our project aims to innovate therapeutic advancements for Huntington’s disease (HD), a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and psychiatric issues, by focusing on the glymphatic and lymphatic systems, critical for brain waste clearance. Currently, no treatments delay HD onset, and there is a lack of digital tools to evaluate the lymphatic system. We will collect comprehensive imaging data from these systems to develop a machine learning algorithm, creating a versatile tool for preclinical therapeutic evaluation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in the field of “Mathematics to improve resource efficiency”
In order to increase resource and energy efficiency in production, the Fraunhofer ITWM develops prediction models on the basis of which process optimisations are carried out. These models are calibrated by adapting model parameters to measurement data. The quality of this adjustment is a decisive factor for the quality of the prediction models. The quality of the fit depends not only on the measurement accuracy, but also on the design of the measurements. Typically, this experimental design task is addressed by linearisation in the model parameters. In process engineering and biotechnology, however, one often has to deal with strongly non-linear relationships. The subject of this work is the development and investigation of methods to take into account non-linear relationships in the design of experiments in such a way that a practical benefit for industrial application arises.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in the field of “Mathematics to increase the resilience of production processes”
The simulation of production processes can make a decisive contribution to increasing energy and resource efficiency. When using simulations in practice, it must be taken into account that influencing variables such as energy and raw material prices are subject to stochastic fluctuations. To protect against such fluctuations, additional storage and buffers must be created, which lead to increased investment and operating costs.
Model-based, interactive decision support tools can highlight the interdependencies between increased resilience and increased costs and lead to the most balanced compromises possible.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Thesis – Therapy for Huntington’s Disease
One of our projects aims to innovate therapeutic advancements for Huntington’s disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects the glymphatic and lymphatic systems, which are critical for removing the waste products of brain cells. Major symptoms include motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and neurological issues. Currently, there is neither a known treatment to delay Huntington’s disease onset nor sufficient digital tools to evaluate the lymphatic system. Our mission is to collect comprehensive imaging data from these systems to develop a machine learning algorithm and thus create a versatile tool for preclinical therapeutic evaluation.

About Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Germany –Official Website
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, based in Germany, is one of the world’s leading applied research organizations. It plays a crucial role in the innovation process by prioritizing research in key future technologies and transferring its research findings to industry in order to strengthen Germany as a hub of industrial activity as well as for the benefit of society.
Founded in 1949, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany. Its nearly 32,000 employees, predominantly scientists and engineers, work with an annual business volume of 3.4 billion euros; 3.0 billion euros of this stems from contract research, which is divided into three funding pillars. Fraunhofer generates a share of this from industry and license-fee revenue, totaling 836 million euros. This high proportion of industrial revenue is Fraunhofer’s unique selling point in the German research landscape. Another share of contract research revenue comes from publicly funded research projects. The final share is base funding supplied by the German federal and state governments and enables our institutes to develop solutions now that will become relevant to the private sector and society in a few years.
