PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Ethical and Societal Challenges of Agricultural Automation

This project will explore fundamental questions raised by agricultural automation as a politically and societally embedded phenomenon. For example, what does it mean when decisions about cultivation—once made by farmers—are increasingly determined by algorithms and robotic systems? How do these technologies structure new forms of dependence, control, and opacity, and what kinds of epistemic assumptions about farming, efficiency, and nature underpin their design? Who designs these systems, and whose expertise is legitimized or erased in the process? What knowledge traditions—sensor data, machine learning models, agronomic science—are prioritized over others, such as local, experiential, or traditional agricultural knowledge?

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions on Inequality Dynamics at the Department of Macro, International and Labour Economics

The Department of Macro, International and Labour Economics (MILE) at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University will offer up to 3 PhD positions, starting September 1, 2025. These positions will be for 4 years and all work under a department-wide research theme of Inequality Dynamics.

The research theme on Inequality Dynamics focuses on understanding how past, contemporary and (expected) future environmental, political, and technological transformations differentially impact economic activity and well-being of firms, individuals, and societies. Particular focus lies on understanding these transformational processes – the dynamics – and on the heterogeneous paths through which adjustments take place, where inequality enters as either a determining feature or as an observable outcome of transitions. Combining micro- and macro-level approaches from different areas and subfields in economics, the insights generated by the research of this theme shed light on a variety of relevant questions facing societies across industrialized, emerging and developing economies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate to conduct ethnographic research on smart farming

Smart farming refers to the use of digital technologies to automate various agricultural practices ranging from planting to the application of fertilizers and pesticides to harvesting, and it is an increasingly important area of both public and private investment. Although smart farming is often pitched as enhancing productivity and increasing yields, anthropologists and political ecologists have recently begun to identify the role these technologies play in shifting the power relations between farm workers, farm managers, and investors, while also changing the practices of agriculture and their environmental impacts. Advances in sensor technology, robotics and artificial intelligence are leading to the datafication, digitalization, and automation of agricultural production in ways that are at once both novel and part of a much longer history of the political economy and ecology of changing agricultural technologies.

(12) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Framework for automated ODE model construction

This vacancy represents an exciting opportunity for ambitious individuals to join the department of Cell Biology-Inspired Tissue Engineering (cBITE) at the MERLN Institute for Technology-inspired Regenerative Medicine at Maastricht University in the Netherlands as part of the ERC STG project “AUTOMATHIC”, under the supervision of dr. Aurélie Carlier. This 5-year interdisciplinary project aims to perform cutting-edge research in developing new methodologies for the automated modeling of the dynamic behavior of large biological networks. The project also involves engaging with national and international stakeholders.

In silico models aim to capture and elucidate the complex and emergent interactions of biological systems, with the goal of expediting research and potential clinical translation. For example, ordinary differential equation (ODE) models of toxin and drug transport are being developed to bring safer therapies to chronic kidney disease patients. Despite recent progress, these cutting-edge ODEs only model transport in steady state and remain limited regarding the amount and complexity of dynamic transport mechanisms as it is often not clear which kinetic relation is most suitable. This limitation is due to the manual and labor-intensive approaches to construct the ODEs, which critically hinder their application in quantitative toxicity assessment in key industrial settings like drug development. In AUTOMATHIC, we aim to develop an integrated framework for automated ODE structure identification, parameter estimation and model evaluation and explore the capabilities of the developed framework for toxin and drug transport in the kidney.
