PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Statistics
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time.
The research projects for the advertised position will be in the area of branching stochastic processes for phylogenetic comparative methods.
This is primarily focused on fundamental research on the development of new inference methods and algorithms for wide classes of stochastic models. However, research will be conducted in collaboration with biologically oriented researches allowing for testing and applying the methods on real data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Automatic Control
You will work on a project on data driven control. In recent years, data-driven control in high dimensions has penetrated many new application areas. Examples include control of autonomous vehicles based on video data, simulation-based prediction of turbulent flows and precision medicine based on gene sequencing time series data. Large data sets come with significant computational challenges. Tremendous algorithmic progress has been made in machine learning and related areas, but application to dynamic systems is hampered when the number of time samples is small compared to state dimensions, while latency and stability remain central concerns. As a result, learning-based feedback in high dimensions is still carried out without a solid theoretical foundation. This leads to unpredictable behavior, which is a major bottleneck for efficient and resilient control of complex systems in engineering and medicine. Your research will bridge this gap, and it will be carried out in collaboration with Professor Anders Rantzer at the Department of Automatic Control at Lund University, and within ELLIIT.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Spatio-Temporal Machine Learning
We are looking for a PhD student to work on the development of novel spatio-temporal machine learning methods.
Our world is inherently spatio-temporal, i.e. physical processes around us evolve over both time and space, making spatio-temporal processes and data omnipresent in science and technology, with applications ranging from weather forecasting to cardiovascular medicine. Computational tools for simulating such processes – both traditional based e.g. on computational fluid dynamics and more recent based on AI/machine learning – constitute fundamental scientific domains that act as enablers for predicting and reasoning about dynamics and transport patterns, in turn being of key importance for a broad range of human activities.
The research in the PhD project will focus on core spatio-temporal machine learning method development, including: generative models for grid-based and particle-based spatio-temporal data; controlled generation methods for data assimilation; and graph-based multi-scale neural network models.
While the developed methods will be broadly applicable, particular emphasis will be put on the problem of inferring gas dynamics in urban environments. Gas dynamics shape air quality, greenhouse gas fluxes, and emergency response capacity. Yet, current modelling approaches are incapable of inference from diverse sensory data, too computationally demanding for real-time use, and lack reliable uncertainty quantification. The methods developed in the project will tackle these shortcomings, enabling computationally efficient inference and prediction of gas dynamics at high spatial and temporal resolution, and in turn more effective climate change mitigation, urban air quality management, and rapid response to hazardous releases.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Power-Efficient Integrated Circuit Design Techniques for Full-Duplex 6G Transceivers
The objective of this position is to develop, design, and conduct cutting-edge research on power-efficient integrated circuits (ICs) and transceivers tailored for next-generation 6G systems. To ensure seamless integration, these front-end solutions must be compatible with massive MIMO architectures, necessitating full-duplex operation and reciprocity. The project aims to establish an innovative IC-antenna co-design methodology for full-duplex transceiver front-ends, addressing key design challenges through a comprehensive multi-domain approach spanning antenna, analog/RF, and digital domains. The expected outcome is a novel co-design strategy for radio transceivers, validated through measured and verified state-of-the-art performance. Results are expected to be disseminated through high-impact international journals and leading conferences in the field.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student infrainformatics with focus on semantic and goal-oriented communication
You will work in the ELLIIT funded project “Safety-Critical Intelligent Machines with Cloud-Assisted AI and Control”. This project focuses on safety-critical intelligent machines, e.g. collaborative robots, rescue drones, or vehicles with advanced driver-assistance systems, with cloud-assisted AI and control systems. A main challenge in all cloud-assisted AI and control systems is to deliver the right and significant piece of information to the right point of computation (or actuation) at the correct moment in time. To address this challenge, you will focus on developing theoretical and algorithmic foundations for goal-oriented, semantics-aware communication enabling timely and reliable cloud-to-agent interactions. PhD position summary/title: PhD student in AI Security
Large language model (LLM) agents represent the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, integrating LLMs with external tools and memory components to execute complex reasoning and decision-making tasks. These agents are increasingly deployed in domains such as healthcare, finance, cybersecurity, and autonomous vehicles, where they interact dynamically with external knowledge sources, retain memory across sessions, and autonomously generate responses and actions. While their adoption brings transformative benefits, it also exposes them to new and critical security risks that remain poorly understood. Among these risks, memory poisoning attacks pose a severe and immediate threat to the reliability and security of LLM agents. These attacks exploit the agent’s ability to store, retrieve, and adapt knowledge over time, leading to biased decisions, manipulation of real-time behavior, security breaches, and system-wide failures. The goal of this project is to develop a theoretical foundation for understanding and mitigating memory poisoning in LLM agents.
This position, funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of AI security, tackling some of the most pressing challenges in the field.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Experimental Furniture Making and Craft Techniques
The aim of this doctoral position is to explore how new design languages and aesthetic expressions can emerge when classical furniture design principles and historical craft techniques intersect with today’s digital manufacturing possibilities.
By combining traditional furniture-making knowledge with e.g. CNC and robotic machining, additive manufacturing, and digital simulation, the research investigates how future aesthetics and methods of production might be shaped in this dynamic interplay between the analogue and the digital.
A central focus lies in the meeting of materials – how different wood species, biocomposites, and hybrid materials react and interact when processed with both traditional and computer-controlled techniques. Through practical experiments, the doctoral student will push the boundaries of these materials, uncovering new design expressions while deepening the understanding of sustainable processing in complex production chains.
Precision and resource efficiency are combined with the ambition to create aesthetically innovative results. The goal is to integrate functional and environmentally conscious solutions while simultaneously opening up new opportunities for formal experimentation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Explorative Furniture Upholstery with New Materials and Techniques
The aim of this PhD position is to investigate how upholstery craft and furniture design can advance through the integration of novel materials and more sustainable techniques. The research will examine design strategies for achieving comfort through diverse materials, including upholstery, springs, flexible materials, bio-based foams, recycled fibers, adaptive textiles, fabrics, padding materials, and composite structures. It will also address the reduction of environmental impact while extending the expressive and functional potential of furniture design. Central to the project is a critical reassessment of current upholstery methods and materials, often environmentally unsustainable, through the combination of craft knowledge, emerging material technologies, and modular design, to explore how comfort, durability, and aesthetics can be achieved within a circular design framework.
Through hands-on experimentation and furniture making, the doctoral project will develop material-driven design strategies that respond to the inherent properties of different material, its resilience, tactility, elasticity, and surface behaviour, rather than forcing new materials into conventional patterns. This approach will lead to a methodological framework for material-conscious design, offering designers and upholsterers tools for integrating sustainability and innovation from concept to finished product.
The research outcomes are expected to contribute both to academic knowledge and to professional practice, supporting the transition towards more regenerative and adaptable furniture systems. Results will be shared through publications, demonstrator projects, and educational models, strengthening the link between research, teaching, and craft-based innovation at Malmstens.
