PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Dynamics of Light-triggered Supramolecular Structures (1.0 FTE)

Using High speed-atomic force microscopy (High speed-AFM) the student will image, at the single-particle level, the formation dynamics of supramolecular structures. The ultimate goal is to elucidate in real time the dynamics and mechanisms behind formation and adaptive behaviour at the nanoscale. The adaptive behaviour will be probed by varying enverinmental conditions, in particular providing stimuli based on changes in ionic strength, pH, temperature and light flux. By studying surface based processes we directly asses templated assembly.

In this project, the formation dynamics and adaptive behaviour of various systems will be probed, starting with two distinct types of assemblies, nanopores and nanofibres/nanotubes. By further developing the High Speed-AFM approach to study these systems, the molecular basis of the adaptive behaviour of the assemblies will be scrutinized. The PhD student will work in close cooperation with the lab of Ben Feringa where the structures are synthesised.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position Motivating people to contribute to societal transitions

Are you interested in just and sustainable transitions, group processes and collective action? Are you looking for a PhD position with both scientific and societal impact? In that case this PhD position at the Environmental Psychology research group at the University of Groningen might just be what you are looking for. This PhD position is embedded in the national NWO-NWA project ECCO: Empower citizen Collectives in Societal Transitions: https://www.collectievekracht.eu/ecco/default.aspx),

Can citizen collectives such as community energy or climate initiatives drive just and sustainable transitions by motivating not only participants but also non-participants? Your research will investigate how citizen collectives (CCs) influence motivations, shared identities, and behaviours of both involved and uninvolved individuals, examining whether these initiatives inadvertently create polarisation or successfully foster inclusive engagement.

As a PhD candidate, you will have the opportunity to develop your own research questions, collect data, and share your findings with both scientific colleagues and partners from professional practice worldwide. Under the supervision and guidance of Prof. Lise Jans and Prof. Ellen van der Werff, and in collaboration with a motivated team of multidisciplinary researchers and societal partners within the ECCO project, you will work on furthering understanding on the motivational influence of citizen collectives in advancing sustainable transitions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Industrial symbiosis and energy transition

Climate policy and the energy transition are forcing industrial companies to fundamentally reconsider their energy use, supply chains, and collaboration models. One promising approach is industrial symbiosis—where companies utilize each other’s waste streams, heat, or electricity, or jointly develop infrastructure. Despite the recognized technical and economic potential, there is a lack of insight into the strategic behavior of companies within such symbiotic networks, especially when external markets and regulations (such as regarding climate policy) change.

The aim of this PhD project is to gain insight into the strategic, economic, and organizational factors that stimulate or hinder collaboration in industrial symbiosis. The research will in particular be directed at the transition in heating in regions with various types of heat users and producers within the context of residual heat supply chains, such as in horticultural and industry clusters.

PhD position summary/title: Two PhD positions on Modular Control Systems Design using Assume-Guarantee Contracts

The increasing complexity and ever-tighter performance requirements on systems such as occurring in high-tech manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, and smart energy poses many challenges to the current status of control theory. Namely, existing control methods do not scale with the increased size and heterogeneity of such systems, which typically comprise a large number of distinct but interacting components.

These projects address these challenges by contributing to the development of a control theory that is inherently modular, i.e., that allows for considering components independently. Inspired by so-called contract theories from computer science, such modular control theory will be based on the introduction of assume-guarantee contracts for control systems. These contracts should have two desired features: i) be capable of expressing rich specifications; and ii) come equipped with a theory of compositional analysis that allows for translating component-level specifications to system-level specifications.

The two PhD positions will focus on the use of contracts for modular control system design, targeting the following:

1.     Contract synthesis, that is, the design of component-level specifications guaranteeing system-level specifications and performance.

2.     Component and controller co-design, according to component-level specifications.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate Legal pluralism and corruption in Central Asia

Focus: Globally, anticorruption programs are often premised on the idea of a singular and universal notion of “the rule of law.” However, empirical sociolegal studies reveal that official state laws frequently coexist and compete with other informal normative systems. This project will examine how such legal pluralism impacts laws, policies, and programs aimed at combating corruption in Central Asia. It will also investigate how public officials, civil society actors, and businesses navigate and respond to these competing legal systems.
