Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Atomic-Scale Quantum Sensing and Information
The research will be part of the recent ERC Starting Grant “Atomic Scale Quantum Sensing and Information with Molecular Nanostructures on a Scanning Probe Tip” (ERC-2024-StG, QuSINT). Our research focuses on the study of quantum magnetism at the atomic scale. We build artificial quantum architectures from single atoms and molecules on surfaces and on probe tips, control their spin states, and study qubit systems. A particular emphasis is on exploiting the manipulation capabilities of scanning probe microscopes to fabricate molecular quantum sensors on probe tips to detect the tiny electric and magnetic fields of quantum systems at the atomic level (Nature Nanotechnology 19, 1466 (2024)), e.g. in emerging quantum materials such as 2D materials. The research is carried out in our newly established laboratory with two millikelvin scanning probe microscopes in ultra-high vacuum with adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration (Rev. Sci. Instrum. 92, 063701, (2021)). The millikelvin systems reach temperatures below 30 mK and allow the application of magnetic fields to the sample. We characterize the magnetic properties of the quantum systems using standard spectroscopic detection schemes and electron spin resonance.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc – Neutron Spectroscopy for Energy Materials
Understanding the fundamental physical and chemical properties of energy materials is crucial to realizing a sustainable and environmentally friendly future. At the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science – Neutron Analytics for Energy Research (JCNS-3), we investigate the dynamic and electronic properties of energy materials by employing various scattering techniques. Examples of our research interests are the structure and the dynamics and diffusion of protons and lithium ions in fuel cells and batteries, or the binding states of adsorbate molecules on catalyst surfaces.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher – Development of Parahydrogen-Induced Polarization for Hyperpolarized NMR
The Institute of Biological Information Processing – Structural Biochemistry (IBI-7) focuses on understanding dynamic interactions between biological macromolecules and their structure, which is crucial to the function of every cell and organism. Central to this goal is nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), which provides detailed information about the microscopic structure and function of molecules. But NMR is an intrinsically insensitive technique, often requiring many hours or days of data acquisition to yield high-resolution structure maps. The Hyperpolarization Methods lab develops chemical and physical approaches to hyperpolarize atoms and molecules, enhancing their NMR signals by orders of magnitude. This opens entirely new possibilities for spectroscopy and imaging in chemistry, biology, and in vivo MRI.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc – Molecular Machine Learning with Foundation Models
If you are passionate about protein dynamics and design, protein function prediction, small molecule property prediction, modern artificial intelligence methods, molecular dynamics, and interdisciplinary research, this is your chance to be part of an exciting journey at the forefront of science and technology.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc – Development of scalable superconducting quantum systems
The mission of the Institute for Functional Quantum Systems (PGI-13) is to create the technological and scientific basis to enable useful quantum computing. We focus on developing quantum devices, improving their coherence and materials, and implementing quantum gates and algorithms. We use superconducting qubits that operate at temperatures close to absolute zero and are controlled by high-speed signals. A key requirement is to preserve high quality quantum operations as we scale. Overcoming these exciting challenges lies at the interface between scientific research and engineering.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in the domain of coherent spin shuttling for scaling semiconductor qubits
Building on in-house fabricated devices, we have recently demonstrated the ability to shuttle electrons between gate defined quantum dots in Si/SiGe over micron-scale distances using only four different AC-voltages, independent of the distance covered https://arxiv.org/abs/2108.00879 . Theoretical consideration indicate good prospects for maintaining spin-coherence of the shuttled electron, which would make this approach very promising for scaling up semiconductor spin qubit devices. This position focuses on experimentally demonstrating coherent spin shuttling, shuttling-compatible high-fidelity qubit control and further ingredients for a shuttling-based architecture, using devices from academic or industrial fabrication.
