(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Associate – Warren Lab

The Warren Lab (in the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join our team seeking to reveal the physiological mechanisms that enable animals to survive severe hypoxia and anoxia. This position is funded by a recent grant from the National Science Foundation (award #2421029) to carry-out studies of neurophysiological function and gene expression in the brain of anoxic turtles. Our lab has recently succeeded in culturing primary neurons from the cerebrocortex of turtles and demonstrated they possess a functional neuronal phenotype. The person hired to fill this position will lead studies of the membrane properties of these isolated neurons in response to anoxia using whole-cell patch-clamp recording techniques.

The Warren Lab is one of many that form part of a vibrant community of neuroscience researchers within Saint Louis University’s Institute for Translational Neuroscience. The St. Louis region is also home to many academic and industrial leaders in the fields of neuroscience and physiology. The position will include travel to conferences and the formation of collaborations with researchers at the University of Toronto and Aarhus University.

Professor Warren is invested in the current and future success of the postdoctoral associate and, with them, will formulate a mentoring plan tailored to their careers upon their arrival. This will include weekly meetings and funding for conference travel.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Fellow

NIH funded postdoctoral positions are available to study the structural enzymology of proteins responsible for blood coagulation (https://biochem.slu.edu/faculty/dicerawp/) with the goal of unraveling the molecular architecture and mechanism of the underlying interactions. The approach uses a combination of conventional (rapid kinetics, protein engineering, X-ray crystallography) and innovative (smFRET, cryo-EM) biophysical techniques. Current projects in the lab focus on the interaction of prothrombin with prothrombinase, leading to generation of thrombin and blood clotting, the activation of factor V required for assembly of prothrombinase and the interaction of the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex with protein C that halts the coagulation response.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Fellow

Postdoctoral Position in Ion Channels and Membrane Proteins at Saint Louis University

A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Dr. Gucan Dai at the Edward A. Doisy Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Saint Louis University School of Medicine. We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a strong background in biophysics and biochemistry, particularly in the study of ion channels or membrane proteins. Expertise in patch-clamp electrophysiology or fluorescence imaging is highly desirable.

The Dai lab investigates the fundamental mechanisms of ion channels in excitable membranes using a multidisciplinary approach. Our NIH-funded research integrates structural biology, chemical biology, genetics, fluorescence microscopy, and electrophysiology. The lab is equipped with two cutting-edge patch-clamp electrophysiology/fluorescence imaging systems, including Missouri’s only frequency-domain fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy system. Research Focus Areas:Voltage-sensing mechanisms of voltage-gated ion channels –These channels are key players in conditions such as chronic pain, cardiac arrhythmias, and epileptic seizures. Trainees will gain hands-on experience with advanced techniques like patch-clamp fluorometry (PCF), Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), and the use of fluorescent noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs).Lipid-mediated regulation of ion channels and membrane dynamics –This research explores the role of lipids in the regulation of ion channels, with implications for inflammatory and neuropathic pain, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and viral infections. Relevant techniques include whole-cell fluorometry, calcium imaging, TIRF microscopy, and fluorescence lifetime imaging.
