12 Postdoctoral Fellowship at Umea University, Sweden 

The position will be connected to one of the department’s research profiles in educational work (https://www.umu.se/en/department-of-applied-educational-science/research/), and preferably to one of the profiles’ externally financed research projects. At the moment there are seven such projects in the department:

A fully funded, two-year postdoc position is immediately available in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Umeå University. The position is open to computational scientists with an interest in microbial (meta)genomic data analysis. 

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in Sweden and worldwide today. Our research group investigates various risk factors for cardiovascular disease. By linking national registers and databases with Västerbotten’s unique population surveys, we can follow risk factor patterns within  individuals for more than half a century. We can thus study temporal relationships between different risk factors, and analyze how these affect the risk of cardiovascular disease in different phases of life. We particularly focus on the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of high blood pressure, as well as diseases of the aorta. 

The aim of the project is to investigate whether stress and anxiety affect pain experiences and whether this is associated with neurochemical levels in the brain. Spectroscopy will be used to measure selected neurotransmitters (GABA and glutamate) in 2 pain-related brain regions. In addition, we study how human touch affects pain signaling and perception. The project is interdisciplinary, including researchers with expertise in several fields.

We are announcing a full time postdoctoral position in the cognitive neuroscience of aging at the Department of Integrative Medical Biology (IMB) and Umeå center for Functional Brain Imaging (UFBI: www.ufbi.umu.se; director: Lars Nyberg). UFBI is an interdisciplinary research center where functional and structural brain imaging is used to address several basic science and clinical research questions. The research environment at UFBI is highly dynamic and stimulating, with a robust infrastructure including state-of-the-art scanning equipment and strong in-house expertise in statistics and neuroimaging analyses.

The aim of project is to address key questions about the processes and mechanisms related to zoonotic and vector-borne disease transmission by developing and working with models accounting for ecological, evolutionary, or epidemiological aspects typically in relation to environmental- and climatic change to better understand relevant processes, to make predictions and guide intervention strategies. There are opportunities to customize the postdoctoral research within this context depending on interests and qualifications and the work will be conducted primarily within the Horizon Europe projects IDAlert (idalertproject.eu) and/or BEPREP (www.helsinki.fi/en/news/pandemics/how-prevent-next-pandemic).

The postdoc will work in the laboratory of Prof Maria Fällman. The studies are focused on molecular mechanisms in bacterial pathogens important for their ability to establish and maintain persistent infections in presence of competing microbiota and an active immune system. Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and to some extent Salmonella enterica are commonly employed as model pathogens.  The postdoc project involves studies of bacterial in vivo gene expression in infected tissue as well as from bacteria exposed to infection related conditions in vitro and aims at identifying bacterial components that are critical for infection.
