Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in the field of Spatial History
The Mediterranean is often seen as a dividing border between two worlds: North and South; Christian and Muslim. This pattern has been mostly influenced and supported by nationalist historiographies, which tended to create borders and accentuate differences between areas that were originally connected. DiplomatiCon-project aims precisely to break free from this one-sided view on the history of the region and to present the first example of History of Diplomacy that truly reflects the late medieval context of interactions and exchanges between the Islamic and Christian worlds. Based on the approaches and methodologies advocated by the New Diplomatic History and Connected History, the project will focus on the three most important actors of the late medieval world – the Mamluk Sultanate of Cairo on the Islamic side and the Italian polities as well as the Crown of Aragon on the Christian side – and it will challenge the common narratives of political and cultural antagonism between the two worlds by pointing at the spheres of contact and interaction where an informal type of diplomacy could be performed. This approach will allow to reveal the networks and whole set of actors and agents involved in the diplomatic process, as well as the way Mediterranean space was produced and perceived. In order to do so, the project turns to state-of-the-art methodologies using Geographic Information Systems (HisGIS) and Social Network Analysis (SNA).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral candidate in Learner Corpus Studies
This call invites innovative postdoctoral proposals to redefine and advance the study of syntactic complexity (SC) in second language (L2) English. SC, a core component of the Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency (CAF) triad, reflects linguistic sophistication and risk-taking in L2 development. However, despite its critical role in L2 research, teaching, and assessment, SC remains plagued by conceptual ambiguity, inconsistent operationalizations, and overreliance on opaque automatic tools.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral candidates Microfluidics for sustainable photo(electro)catalysis and sensing
In 2024, the new research group A-PECS was founded on the expertise of four PIs working on engineering, photo(electro)chemistry and sensing. In order to accomplish more performant reactors and sensors, a driving force towards miniaturization is noticed. This provides a challenging opportunity for a post-doctoral candidate to develop a new research line on microfluidics, synergistically with the A-PECS PIs. The major challenge is to translate generic concepts of microfluidic devices into specific applications within the fields of excellence of A-PECS. Important examples for which microfluidics can have a groundbreaking impact in our group, include, but are not limited to: (plasmon) nanoparticle synthesis, photo(electro)catalytic conversions, sensors for air pollution, phenols, drugs and point-of-care diagnostics, as well as Multiphysics modelling of the device characteristics.

About University of Antwerp, Belgium –Official Website
The University of Antwerp (Dutch: Universiteit Antwerpen) is a major Belgian university located in the city of Antwerp. The official abbreviation is UAntwerp. The University of Antwerp has about 20,000 students, which makes it the third-largest university in Flanders. The University of Antwerp is characterised by its high standards in education, internationally competitive research and entrepreneurial approach. It was founded in 2003 after the merger of three smaller universities.
The university’s roots go back to Sint-Ignatius Handelshogeschool (Saint-Ignatius School for Higher Education in Commerce) founded by the Jesuits (Society of Jesus) in Antwerp in 1852. This was one of the first European business schools to offer formal university degrees. It later opened a Faculty of Literature and Philosophy (including Law) and a Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. It was renamed Universitaire Faculteiten Sint-Ignatius Antwerpen (UFSIA) in the 1960s when the Belgian government granted it university status. In the early 1970s UFSIA joined into a confederation with “Rijksuniversitair Centrum Antwerpen” (RUCA) and “Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen” (UIA), public institutions.
