Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Environmental Effects in Galaxy Evolution” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
We seek to appoint a three-year Research Associate to conduct radioastronomical research focusing on galaxy clusters at the Observatory of the University of Hamburg.
The goal of this work, funded by the German Research Foundation, is to study diffuse radio sources and AGN in galaxy clusters.
The successful applicant will be based on the Hamburg Observatory campus. Scientists at Hamburg Observatory cover a wide range of research areas of modern astrophysics, such as extragalactic astronomy, cosmology, galaxy formation, gravitational waves and statistical analysis including artificial intelligence. Our 9 individual research groups provide a diverse and stimulating research environment. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be able to benefit from the Observatory’s close ties with other research institutes in Hamburg, including DESY and the Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe”. Generous computing resources as well as travel funding will be available to the successful candidate.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Earth System Reanalysis”
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
The Project „Earth System Reanalysis“ develops a novel adjoint-based climate data assimilation framework and applies it to perform pilot Earth system reanalysis. The successful candidate will participate in improving an already existing pilot coupled Earth system reanalysis by spearheading innovative climate model improvement concepts through parameter estimation and by expanding the existing assimilation framework through methodological advances.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Top quark physics with the CMS experiment” (PhD position)
The successful candidate is expected to pursue a PhD project on the topic of quark physics, especially in the context of measurements of the top quark mass. Our team is leading such experiments as part of the CMS collaboration at CERN’s LHC. In particular, we aim to improve previous measurements through advanced statistical methods, quantitative machine learning and additional data.
Our group consists of more than 60 members and is deeply involved in Higgs analyses, top physics, searches for physics beyond the standard model, detector R&D and construction, computing, as well as calibration and trigger development of the CMS experiment.
A close collaboration exists with other research groups in experimental and theoretical physics of the University and of DESY located on the same campus. Our group is part of the Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” which performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. This research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology at Universität Hamburg and DESY.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Fossil fields in Ap/Bp stars: an origin from star formation and protostellar evolution”
Research within the DFG funded project “Fossil magnetic fields in Ap/Bp stars: an origin from star formation and protostellar evolution”. This research project focuses on the exploration of the origin of magnetic fields in radiative Ap/Bp-type stars, where stellar dynamos cannot operate due to the absence of convection. Instead we explore a possible fossil origin with magnetic fields resulting from the star formation process. These magnetic fields then also need to survive the phase of protostellar evolution. This project skems to make significant advances on this topic pursuing multi-physics high-resolution simulations of intermediate-mass star formation to arrive at predictions for the expected strength of fossil magnetic fields, and subsequently to assess their possibility of survival during the protostellar evolution phase, considering the possible decay of magnetic fields due to their interaction with the convective phases of the protostar.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Cooperation and cheating in sub-social spiders: negative frequency dependent selection and sex allocation”
We are seeking a highly motivated person to work on the DFG-funded project “Cooperation and cheating in sub-social spiders: negative frequency dependent selection and sex allocation”. In this joint project with Prof. M.E. Herberstein from the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change in Hamburg, we will investigate the producer-scrounger dynamics in broods of the Australian crab-spider Australomisidia ergandros. We will test how sex and and negative frequency dependent dynamics will affect the likelihood of producing vs scrounging. We will conduct controlled feeding trials in groups with different scrounger frequencies to measure individual foraging success and growth. We will further apply automatic tracking methods to document the interaction networks and we will use a non-lethal, molecular sexing method to determine the sex of juvenile spiders. Field work in Australia will also be part of the research program.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “The Hidden Weapon. Blockade in the Era of the Two World Wars (BLOCKADE)” European Research Council project
The two PhD researchers will focus within the research dimension ‘Globalisation, Strategy and Violence’ on one of two work-packages from the theme ‘Resistance//Vulnerability’. These work packages are two of five positions across the four BLOCKADE locations that will investigate the themes of resilience and vulnerability, that is, exploring the impact of blockades on economic, strategic and social vulnerabilities and the corresponding ability of societies and individuals to prepare for or adapt to shocks caused by blockade from different angles.
- Strategy: Decision-making in Europe. This work-package will determine how decision-makers learned from the blockades of the First World War and adapted to new strategic situations. This includes identifying the vulnerabilities of the enemy prior to 1939 and responding to the perceived (in)vulnerabilities during the war. The WP will focus on preparations for and the execution of the largely forgotten Allied blockade of Axis Europe, 1939-1945. It will assess the British and Americanperceptions of the blockade’s effectiveness on Germany and/or Italy, and consequent policy shifts.
- The Colonial and Imperial Context of Blockade. This work-package will focus on the involvement of sub-Saharan Africa in blockade in the Second World War. It will investigate British imperial policy, which necessitated naval and aerial patrols of vast areas of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans to implement blockade on the Axis, secure communications with and supplies from Africa, the Middle East and Asia (such as oil and rubber), and defend against submarine raids on merchant shipping. The WP will determine the specific resilience as well as unique vulnerabilities that arose in colonial and imperial contexts.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Demonstrating real-time seismic noise prediction for active compensation” in the project Seismart
The project is a collaboration between the University of Hamburg, The Helmut-Schmidt University and DESY. SeiSmart explores the potential use and benefits of seismic sensing networks using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) in cities and research campuses for high precision experiments, structural health monitoring and scientific research and sustainability. (10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “DAS and seismic wave propagation modeling for structural monitoring of large research facilities”
The position will be situated in the seismology group at the institute of Geophysics of the University of Hamburg. The group specializes in ambient noise seismology and the use of innovative seismic instrumentation. Their research focuses on understanding seismic noise sources, monitoring structural changes in Earth materials and beyond. They apply advanced sensors to investigate the near subsurface and use environmental seismology to monitor environmental processes.
The successful candidate for this position can pursue a doctoral degree in Geophysics at the University of Hamburg. The research focuses on modeling seismic wave propagation and wave-structure interaction in large scientific infrastructures, such as particle accelerators and detection facilities. Responsibilities include analyzing in-situ data from an extensive DAS network to understand local seismic wave propagation effects, developing numerical models of seismic wave transmission through heterogeneous structures, and investigating how seismic wavefields couple into large infrastructures. The candidate will compare real-world seismic measurements with model predictions to validate and refine the simulations. Additionally, the project explores the potential use of DAS technology for structural health monitoring, aiming to support damage assessment and operational reliability of large scientific facilities.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate
Understanding the responses of organisms to environmental change is critical to managing and preserving biodiversity, especially in the light of global climate change. The aim of the project is to elucidate various mechanisms of rapid adaptive changes exemplarily in six subprojects using various biological collections of the University of Hamburg and the Leibnitz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change. Our approach is taxonomically and functionally broad, spanning genomic, molecular, morphological, physiological and community level analysis in animals, plants and fungi. We will apply experimental evolution, phylogenomics, network analyses as well as utilize the rich biological collections that have been capturing diversity over the past 200 years. This project is part of a research consortium that consists of six subprojects in total. Central to all projects is a data science approach to handle and analyze large and complex data. We search for skilled and motivated research associates for the following subproject.
