The current PhD position is available for a highly motivated candidate to work within the research group of Prof. Olivier De Wever. The main aim of the PhD project is to address the fidelity of tumor models in cancer research. In this regard, the PhD student will apply state-of-the-art technologies to analyze the behaviour and therapy response of tumor models including the composition and characteristics of cancer cells and tumor microenvironment elements such as cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) and immune cells.
Tumor models include the use of three-dimensional cell aggregates (also named spheroids) (Peirsman&Blondeel et al. Nature Methods 2021), patient-derived tumor fragments (Vermeulen et al. Sci Rep 2024) and patient-derived orthotopic xenograft mouse models (Fischer et al. Clin Trans Med 2023). Patient-derived models are obtained from surplus tissues in full collaboration with our clinical partners. A living biobank of cancer cell cultures (https://www.crig.ugent.be/en/ghent-living-biobank-sarcoma-glb-s), CAF (Tommelein et al. Cancer Res 2018; Xia et al. Clin Trans Med 2024) and immune cells (Steenbrugge&Dejaeghere et al. Cancer Res 2021) is available to reconstitute the TME using heterocellular spheroids (DeJaeghere&Devlieghere et al. Biomaterials 2018). The De Wever lab is expert in the extensive evaluation of the impact of experimental parameters in tumor models (Peirsman&Blondeel et al. Nature Methods 2021; Fischer et al. STAR protocols 2024; DeThaye et al. Sci Rep 2020). This supporting ecosystem has steered the De Wever lab towards a leading position in the set-up and detailed evaluation of a diverse complementary set of tumor models.
You will work in very close interaction with partners from Cancer Research Institute Ghent (CRIG, Ghent), Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB, Ghent) as well as (inter)national collaborating teams to enable multidisciplinary investigations.

The “WAVES” research group (http://www.waves.intec.ugent.be/) of the department of Information technology of imec-Ghent University is the expertise center in Belgium for decision making, recommender systems, personalization and information filtering (which are subtopics in the research domain of machine learning).
Current research within the WAVES group is focused around the recent trends emerging in the current online and offline world where users have to cope with an overload of information (blogs, social networks, audio-visual content providers, …). At the same time, we observe that the presence on the web becomes more personal and online identity and activities gain importance. As a result, assisting and adaptive intelligent software tools and techniques get an increasingly important role in online services. Tools for decision making assistance are emerging to process the vast amounts of data and provide the human decision maker insights into the data to make the optimal decision. One type of tools for decision making assistance is a recommender system. Recommender systems are commonly-used solutions that generate personal suggestions for users based on their preferences, thereby alleviating the problem of information overload.
The researcher will work within an Inter-University project on artificial intelligence in collaboration with other Flemish Universities. This project will investigate if AI systems can really equal human performance when it comes to complex tasks. AI systems have to be capable of complex reasoning in a way that is autonomous, intelligent and trustworthy. Therefore, we need systems that can integrate and interpret, represent and understand their complex environment in multiple domains, over large timescales and in shared human-machine contexts. A good example of human-machine interaction based on AI is the automatic generation of content recommendations, used by systems such as Amazon and Netflix. The focus of our research group in this project is on this topic of decision making and especially recommender systems.

The prestigious FWO Senior Project “Hearing the Past: Reconstructing the Aural Heritage of Antwerp in the 19th Century” is a cooperation between University of Antwerp and Ghent University and aims to uncover the city’s acoustic past by integrating historical texts with data models, sound ontologies, and AI-based NLP methods. This project not only preserves the city’s acoustic heritage but also enhances public engagement with its multisensory history and stimulates urban historical research, focusing on Antwerp’s 19th-century transformation. It proposes a paradigm shift, recognizing historical sounds as vital components of past environments, meriting academic interest and conservation. The reconstruction of soundscapes aligns with heritage studies’ efforts to portray the past as a multisensory phenomenon, advancing urban history through auditory research and promoting cultural heritage.

The IDLab Ghent research group seeks a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join the Text-to-Knowledge (T2K) team. The T2K team has worked for many years on natural language processing tasks (NLP), initially mostly on advanced information extraction, but recently also covering other topics, such as conversational agents.
In this PhD you will focus on designing new conversational AI models, based on recent foundation models. The key research question is how these state-of-the-art language models (including multi-modal versions) can be leveraged and adapted to create an AI-powered voicebot in a recruiting context. Key challenges are to achieve (1) controlled adaptation of the question sequence in the conversation; (2) personalization of dialog flow as well as language; and (3) improving engagement to ultimately limit drop-out of potential candidates. As an underlying building block to address (1) and (2), it is crucial to be able to incorporate external knowledge, in terms of domain knowledge (e.g., specific vocabulary, ontologies of skill sets and/or job titles), and conversation-specific information (e.g., on the interviewee, the organization, a predefined conversation structure). A second aspect, pertaining to both (2) and (3), is to control the bot’s language generation for (cultural/gender) bias, sentiment, etc.

The IDLab Ghent research group is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join the Software-Defined Radio (SDR) research team. Digital communication plays a pivotal role in professional environments, supporting both persons, machines to interact with each other over a communication network. In professional environments, such as industry automation (industry 4.0), communication becomes increasingly diverse, and demands more reliable and time-critical end-to-end wireless connectivity, that can seamlessly adapt to dynamic environments and application needs. What is also lacking in today’s wireless network is uniform coverage, users often rely on connection to a specific access point, and performance varies when moving around. The next generation Wi-Fi needs to support distributed and coordinated AP architectures, whereby multiple APs can simultaneously serve a single user with coherent beamforming. In short, we want to advance wireless communications to the next level on these aspects: uniform coverage, end-to-end latency, time synchronization accuracy among distributed applications across diverse network segments, reliability/QoS for high-priority and safety-critical traffic. Today, we are far from achieving that vision, as most research is limited to theoretical or simulation studies, ignoring real-world impairments. Individual access points produced by different vendors rarely cooperate, features such as coherent beamforming among different access points have great potential but cannot be realized in real-life.

Controlling food texture has prominent implications ranging from food sustainability to its acceptability by individual consumers, passing through nutritional and health-related aspects. Food can be considered as a composite material whose texture is ruled by its microstructure, and therefore can be treated as a particle reinforced matrix generating the texture perceived by the consumer. Sustainability and food personalization motivate this interdisciplinary doctoral research that combines food engineering, rheology and computational mechanics of fluids and solids. A gelled emulsion will be designed as a food composite. The rheology-microstructure relationship will be modeled and linked to the final texture via 3D printing. In this doctoral research, a state-of-the-art computational multiscale framework for food engineering will be developed.

About Ghent University, Belgium –Official Website
Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.
In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.
Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
