PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Solid Mechanics with focus on modeling of microstructure mechanics in metal foams
The position as doctoral student is part of a new research project which is funded by a Röntgen-Ångström Cluster grant through the Swedish Science Council (VR). The project involves collaboration with partners at Ulm university in Germany and at Malmö university in Sweden. The partners in Ulm and Malmö will focus on experimental analysis of metal foams and the PhD student in Lund will focus on numerical modeling of microstructure mechanics in metal foams. The simulation part of the project work will be founded on numerical modeling and simulation based on finite element, finite difference or spectral methods, for example by crystal plasticity and phase field crystal modeling. To succeed in the project, the doctoral student will have to develop and implement her/his own numerical simulation tools. Collaboration with project partners and fellow PhD students in Ulm and Malmö will be part of the project as well as participation in the experimental tasks, both at local laboratories and at large-scale synchrotron facilities.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in water and carbon cycles at the catchment scale
Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) is an important water quality parameter that affects the fate and dynamics of other pollutants in the aquatic environment. The DOC concentrations in many surface waters across the northern hemisphere, particularly in Sweden, have increased during last decades. Increasing DOC concentrations have important consequences for the ecology and biogeochemistry of freshwaters. Therefore, there is an urgent need for improving our understanding of spatial-temporal variabilities (dynamics) of DOC concentrations in surface waters and the processes that drive DOC dynamics; such understanding is essential for improving our ability to predict impacts of future climate and environmental change (e.g. land use change, forest and agricultural management practices) on DOC in order to support decision-making for sustainable catchment management and planning. To achieve this need, however, we are faced with many challenges including the lack of in-situ DOC measurements at required spatial and temporal scales, and the complex processes controlling DOC confounded by interactions among numerous environmental and climatic factors.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physical geography and Ecosystem Science
A PhD studentship in Physical Geography and Ecosystem science is hereby announced at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem sciences, Lund University (LU), Sweden. The four-year position is funded externally via the project “Impact of land use on land-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases in savannahs of Sahel”.
The main aim with this project is to improve our understanding of the exchange of greenhouse gases between the atmosphere and the ecosystems of African savannahs. The Sahel is a semi-arid biogeographic transition zone between the dry Sahara Desert in the North and the humid Soudanian savannah in the south, and it is one of the world’s largest semi-arid regions. Today we know little about the interactions between climate, ecosystems and land use of the Sahel, and the main aim with this project is to increase our understanding of these interactions. In this project we will do field observations of the land-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases in Savannahs of Senegal, and study its spatial and temporal variability. This project is not only of relevance for improving our understanding of greenhouse gas exchange of semi-arid savannahs of Sahel, but is also important for the ability of countries across Sahel and Africa to report according to the Paris agreement.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Biochemistry
The overall goal of this graduate student project is to identify structure-function-relationships in ADP-ribosylating enzymes and toxins. These proteins have a multidomain structure and both accessory domains and other binding partners regulate the activities and specificities of the catalytic domains. Molecular cloning of multiple constructs and recombinant protein production will be central in producing catalytic domains in various domain and binding partner context. These proteins and protein complexes will then be analyzed with relevant biochemical, biophysical, and structural techniques in order to elucidate the details of their regulation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in neurology
In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the underlying brain amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau pathologies and ensuing neurodegeneration can be reliably detected and monitored using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and imaging biomarkers. The CSF and imaging biomarkers have been successfully used in research settings and in specialized clinics in some countries. However, more accessible and inexpensive methods, like blood tests, are needed for widespread applicability in clinical trials as well as for future implementation in routine clinical care. We have recently published several papers suggesting that phosphorylated tau measured in blood may be a useful diagnostic and prognostic biomarker of AD (Palmqvist et al. JAMA, 2020; Janelidze et al. Nature Medicine, 2020; Cullen et al. Nature Aging, 2021). The main aim of this project is to design accessible and non-invasive tests for diagnosis and prognosis of AD by combining blood biomarkers (e.g. p-tau, biomarker of brain tau pathology; Aβ42/40, biomarker of brain amyloid-β pathology; NfL, biomarkers of neurodegeneration) with cognitive test, imaging as well as genetic biomarkers. The newly developed biomarkers algorithms would be highly useful for wide-spread implementation in primary care and could greatly accelerate the development of effective disease-modifying treatments in AD by facilitating selection and stratification of participants and monitoring of treatment responses.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Solid Mechanics with focus on computational paper mechanics
The employment is part of a project that aims to establish numerical tools that can predict the mechanical response of packaging materials. The material model that will be developed will be based on experimental observations and shall be able to capture, for instance, visco-plasticity, visco-elasticity and damage. One part of the project involves development of tools to identify material parameters. Since the models should be industrial useful, they will be implemented in commercial finite element codes and applied to non-academic applications.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics: Perovskite nanowire light emitting diodes
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are essential for lighting and computer screens. A new family of semiconductors, metal halide perovskites (MHPs), have in recent years shown excellent performance in various optoelectronic applications, most famously for solar cells but also for lasers, LEDs and fundamental physics such a superfluorescent quantum dot arrays. MHPs can be manufactured with low-cost and low-temperature processes based on solution growth. The performance of LEDs is limited by the semiconductor materials that they are formed of, but completely new optical and electronic semiconductors properties can be achieved by nanostructuring.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website
Lund University is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.
Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.
Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.
The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
