Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher for legal aspects of food and medical drug security
FooDrug aims at high standards in quality, safety, acceptability and sustainability of emerging technologies in food and medication production, including promising yet contested alteration of an organism’s genome for agri-food and pharmaceutical applications. Addressing food and nutritional security requires novel ways of producing sustainable, safe, affordable, healthy and flavourful food. Europe alone faces numerous challenges related to the rise in obesity, accessibility of high-quality foods, the impacts of climate change on food systems, and the social, cultural and regulatory requirements for the transition to sustainable diets. Similarly, drug and medication security are challenged by the high costs of development, manufacture and distribution, evaluation of preclinical safety and efficacy, and the dependence of drug manufacturing on international supply chains. FooDrug focuses on tackling these challenges by uniting research across 9 units: the Faculties of Agriculture and Forestry, Pharmacy, Educational Sciences, Law, Science, Social Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Medicine, and the Institute of Biotechnology (a core unit of HiLIFE).

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Functional Cancer Microbiome through the NORPOD program
The post-doctoral project aims to uncover genetic and adaptive mechanisms of the tumour associated microbiome in colon cancer (CRC) and its metastasis to distant organs. The goal is to identify microbial strain specific differences in CRC-associated strains using matched oral, normal and tumour samples and their clinical impact. The aim is to validate these CRC-associated strains using state-of-the-art organoid cultures and novel in vivo mouse models to assess their influence on tumor growth and metabolic rewiring in driving CRC. Finally, we will move beyond correlations to identify functional microbial changes with comparative microbial genomics, indels and SNPs. Our groups have relevant expertise in the above technologies, for example Rafa lab’s expertise in in vivo cancer biology, mouse and organoid models and Dwibedi lab’s expertise in human microbiome genomics and microbial adaptive evolution.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Single-Cell Genomics through the NORPOD program
The aim of the project is to investigate how mutations in chromatin-modifying genes, a common cause of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), lead to shared disruptions in early human neurodevelopment. Using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived human neurons with targeted gene knockouts, we will apply multimodal single-cell and spatial profiling—including RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, cell morphology imaging, and spatial transcriptomics—to identify altered cell states and mis-patterning events. The aim is to integrate computational and experimental approaches, including validation in vivo, to uncover convergent gene regulatory mechanisms, with the goal of informing therapeutic strategies.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Algorithms and Computational Biology
The successful candidate will work within the research project “Structural correctness in metagenomics assembly” funded by the Research Council of Finland in the research group of University Lecturer Leena Salmela. We develop models, algorithms and data structures for high throughput sequencing data with a main emphasis on genome assembly. The research group is part of the Algorithmic Bioinformatics lab at University of Helsinki.
The amount of sequencing data has increased enormously during the last decade. To analyze the data efficiently, it needs to be assembled to genomes or represented in a compact manner. However, current tools for assembly and compaction of sequencing data produce sequences with no estimate of their correctness which severely hampers accurate estimation of the correctness of downstream analysis. In this project we will develop novel models for estimating the correctness of genome and metagenome assembly and algorithms and data structures for computing such correctness estimates.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher OR Doctoral Researcher in Atmospheric Sciences / Environmental Sciences
Northern wetlands emit large amounts of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas. There are high uncertainties in the estimation of wetland CH4 emissions due to the large temporal and spatial variations in CH4 emission and its underlying processes. The lack of continuous observations of CH4 turnover hinders our understanding of CH4 emission variability and the predictability of mechanistic CH4 models. We aim to fill the knowledge gap in the project “A holistic view of Methane turnover in northern Wetlands by Novel isotopic approach (MeWeN): Coupled above/belowground automatic measuring and isotope labelling”.
In the MeWeN project, we use the year-round atmospheric measurement of CH4 fluxes from pristine peatlands with the eddy covariance (EC) technique and static chambers, in combination with the novel continuous surface and subsurface measurements of 13C stable isotope and concentration to infer CH4-related processes in the peat profile. The comprehensive dataset will provide us with detailed information on CH4 turnover dynamics and responses to biotic and abiotic factors along the year, especially during the less studied winter and shoulder seasons. We will develop an isotope version of a process-based CH4 model and update the representation of different wetland types in the model using a data inversion approach. Additionally, we will analyze the spatial heterogeneity of CH4 emission using analytical footprint model and a lagrangian stochastic transport model.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website
The University of Helsinki is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.
As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.
The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.
Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
