(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Cancer Cell Signalling Ref 8403

A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Georgios Giamas to elucidate the involvement of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cancer progression, their regulation and their use as potential biomarkers.

EVs are defined as lipid bilayer enclosed vesicles secreted by both normal and cancer cells. Through transfer of proteins, nucleic acids and lipids, they are directly implicated in the constant crosstalk of cancer cells with their tumour microenvironment (TME) exerting complex effects on neighbouring cells. There has been a lot interest in EVs for their potential roles in normal and pathological conditions, while methods for their detection, concentration and analysis have substantially improved the last 5 years. As a result, EVs have gained an increased interest as potential biomarker candidates for diagnosis, disease recurrence and monitoring response to treatment in cancer patients.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow – Exploring Novel Roles of Greatwall Kinase in Healthy and Cancer Cells Ref 7966

  • A postdoctoral fellowship, funded by a Program Award from CRUK, is available starting June 1st 2022 to investigate mechanisms of mitotic entry control in cancer cells.
  • The mitotic entry network ensures that cells switch between interphase and mitosis in a timely and coordinated manner by activating Cdk1 at the right time and place. This control system constitutes a classical cell cycle switch that is tightly regulated and integrates signals from DNA replication, repair, cell growth and metabolism. We have recently made progress in understanding how kinase activation and phosphatase inactivation are coordinated and how Cyclin A and B contribute to this transition (Rata et al. 2018, Current Biology; Lemmens et al. 2018 Mol. Cell; Hegarat et al. 2020 EMBOJ, Stiff et al. Cell Reports, 2020).
  • The aim of this project will be to expand this line of research and investigate the role of various components of this switch system with a focus on how cancer cells have adapted mitotic entry control to cope with elevated levels of replication stress.
  • This project will be supported by available small molecule inhibitors, genetically engineered cell lines and will employ an interdisciplinary approach involving cell biology, high-throughput and high-resolution microscopy of fixed and live cells, genetic, proteomic and bioinformatic analysis.
