(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Researcher – image analysis/bioinformatics – Spatio-temporal genome and oncogene organization in cancer 80 – 100 %

The Surdez lab at the University of Zurich is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with expertise in image analysis and bioinformatics. This position offers an exciting opportunity to visualize and decipher the spatio-temporal organization of the genome and oncogenes in cancer.

Join our dynamic team, which focuses on aggressive pediatric bone cancers, particularly on Ewing sarcoma. In a recent study, we demonstrated how the STAG2 mutation, prevalent in this cancer, alters the formation of chromatin loops, resulting in increased invasive properties of mutated cells (Surdez et al. 2021, Cancer Cell). Currently, we are leveraging super-resolution microscopy and innovative molecular technologies to decipher and perturb these mechanisms in live cancer cell models.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will be responsible for analyzing confocal and super-resolution microscopy data related to spatio-temporal genome and oncogene regulation. The role also involves comparing Hi-ChIP data with imaging data and developing computational tools to analyze and visualize chromatin conformation and oncogene regulation. Working closely with biologists, you will utilize cutting-edge computational approaches to model and decipher these mechanisms at the real-time scale.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: PostDoc Position in Personalized Visual Analytics: Human Preference Elicitation for Ranking-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Support 100 %

Multi-criteria decision support through item ranking is an understudied research direction. Current solutions exhibit considerable limitations, primarily due to their inability to meet the multi-faceted nature of human decision-making. Choosing between thousands of relevant items is a common task, where people are left alone with the need to express and balance multiple desirable preferences at once. Item rankings are a popular and universal approach to structuring unorganized item collections by multiple criteria at the same time. In interactive solutions, people can express multiple preferences, used by algorithms to compute human-centered and personal rankings. Visual Analytics (VA) is a field of research that supports complex human decision-making tasks by bringing together human intellectuality with the computational power of algorithms in effective human-in-the-loop approaches.
In this project, we will demonstrate how cutting-edge VA principles can be transferred to item ranking, to overcome remaining challenges, demonstrate effective and efficient interactive ranking creation solutions, and empower broad audiences. Limitations of ranking systems mainly include their incompatibility for the elicitation of item- and attribute-based preferences, insufficient handling of user-introduced uncertainty, inadequate guidance for engaging with large item sets, lacking interaction histories, inefficient human-centric feedback loops, or a lack of explanations and transparency of ranking algorithms, thus creating a disconnect between the technology and nuanced user needs. Finally, interactive ranking creation does not yet make use of interfaces for eliciting implicit user preferences, e.g., in textual form using large language models.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Urban Analytics 100 %

The Urban Analytics Unit at the University of Zurich (UZH) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position to join our team working on the development of computational tools to analyze cities in the transition to net-zero transport. The initial appointment will be for three years, with the potential for extension up to nine years and promotion to Senior Assistant (Oberassistent:in), depending on interest and performance.

The appointed researcher will lead a new research project focused on developing computational methods to support an equitable transition to net-zero transport. Key objectives include:

  • Integrating traditional transport models (e.g., agent-based models, spatial interaction models) with data-driven approaches (e.g., deep learning) to enable generative scenario exploration – supporting the design and evaluation of interventions aimed at achieving meet net-zero and equity goals.
  • Developing systems for measuring and tracking the impact of net-zero policies on mobility outcomes using continuous data streams from diverse urban sources. A long-term goal is to enable detection of deviations from model predictions as they occur.
  • Designing methods to investigate the causes of real-world deviations from model predictions within the developed frameworks. Creating approaches to update model assumptions and fine-tune interventions in response to new data to ensure sustained progress towards policy targets.
The University of Zurich (UZH) is the largest university in Switzerland, with 28,000 students and 9,000 employees.
