PhD position summary/title: PhD Student Position in Generative models for Molecular Simulations

Molecular simulations allow researchers to study molecular processes in unprecedented detail. Molecular dynamics simulations have many uses, including drug discovery, materials science, and chemical reaction modeling. They can also be used to simulate biological systems such as proteins and nucleic acids. However, these simulations are computationally expensive, which limits their practical scope dramatically. In this project, the selected candidate will leverage generative AI to speed up simulations, to unlock the mechanisms of large molecular systems such as proteins.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student GaN based electronics for high frequency and power applications

This PhD-student position will focus on research on III-nitride devices and circuits for high frequency applications. We will explore new concepts in III-nitride semiconductor material and device processing to optimize different important properties, such as high frequency operation, output power, linearity, and efficiency, all of importance in high frequency systems. The goal is to push the limits of III-nitride semiconductor devices. New epitaxial designs grown in-house with molecular beam epitaxy or by our collaborative partners. A specific type of transistors, high electron mobility transistors, HEMTs, will processed as well as characterized and evaluated . The goal to optimize high frequency performance will involve both aggressive lateral and vertical down-scaling of important transistor features. The research will therefore include a wide range of activities such as epitaxial design, device processing, and characterization. You will perform extensive experimental and theoretical investigations to understand the fundamental and practical limits of high frequency electronics based on III-nitride semiconductors. You will use our advanced device processing and advanced characterization facilities to connect theoretical predictions with experimental verification.

(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in climate applications of the Arctic Weather Satellite

A primary research area of the division is to utilise passive microwave satellite data for weather forecasting and climate studies. In particular, we are leading in introducing sub-mm wavelengths (frequencies above 300 GHz). A mission dedicated to exploring the sub-mm region is the Ice Cloud Imager (ICI), to be launched in 2025. A project started later is the Arctic Weather Satellite (AWS). This is an European mission, being built in Sweden according to “new space” principles. The launch of AWS will take place already next year, and it will then be the first sensor in space to have sub-mm channels. We are deeply involved in the preparations for both AWS and ICI, together with, for example, the Swedish weather agency (SMHI). The short development time of AWS has resulted in a complete focus on using its data for weather forecasting. This PhD project aims to apply the tools we have developed for ICI on AWS, to derive datasets on ice cloud properties for climate applications. Our approach to tackling this ill-posed problem combines advanced physical simulations of the observations with Bayesian-inclined machine learning. You will collaborate with other PhD students, and also take part in ICI. Accordingly, the project allows you to be involved in “first light” from two ground-breaking satellite missions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Data-Driven Precision Health Research

Our ultimate goal is to develop novel biomarker panels that precisely quantify individual disease risk and identify critical biological processes. To this end, this Ph.D. project will focus on innovative machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches to integrate multi-layer -omics data (e.g., microbiome, genomics, metabolomics, and proteomics) with bioimages of cardiovascular and metabolic tissues (computer tomography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging). By leveraging cutting-edge data-science techniques and globally competitive data sources, this project has the potential to provide novel insights into cardiometabolic disease etiology and inform innovative precision prevention approaches. Our central data sources are the Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study (SCAPIS) and the Swedish Infrastructure for Medical Population-Based Life-Course and Environmental Research (SIMPLER).

(11) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Affordable and climate-neutral housing renovation

Access to decent and affordable housing is a basic human need as well as a human right recognised in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Social Charter, but these needs and rights are not always fulfilled in Europe. At the same time housing has become an increasing focus for investment and wealth generation among high-income and wealthy populations and therefore is both an important form of inequality and a significant cause of inequality. Transitioning to a low carbon emitting Europe and meeting the European Green Deal commitment to reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, without exacerbating existing social inequalities is a complex policy challenge that requires a coherent but multifaceted response, faces implementation challenges and may contradict other policy priorities. Households vulnerable to energy poverty may struggle to pay taxes intended to reduce carbon emissions for instance. Low-income homeowners may lack the means to pay the high upfront costs required to make their home energy efficient. Social housing landlords may not have the capacity to move tenants to alternative accommodation when they renovate their homes. Private landlords in booming housing markets may not feel incentivised to invest in the energy efficiency of dwellings that are in high demand or may only be willing to do so if they can re-let the dwellings for higher rents (sometimes called `renoviction’).
