(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in medical science with a focus on virology

Viruses that infect our respiratory tract are a leading cause of severe illness, mortality, and burden on the healthcare system. There is a lack of effective drugs against these infections due to rapid resistance development and few functions that drugs can target. Our research focus is to obtain new insights into mechanisms that influence the pathogenesis of respiratory viruses and identify new targets that enable development of broad-spectrum treatment for diseases caused by these viruses. We also strive to identify factors that explain why people are differently susceptible to viral infections, with the goal to enable personalized treatments for sensitive individuals. This is a translational project where you will use several different respiratory viruses, including coronaviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus and Puumala hantavirus. For the infection experiments, a primary 3D lung cell model is mainly used and these in vitro studies are complemented with analyses of patient samples. A combination of standard cell/virology-based techniques with state-of-the-art transcriptomics and quantitative proteomics will be used to identify mechanisms and factors that influence the pathogenesis of and susceptibility to respiratory viruses.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in chemistry with a focus on environmental chemistry

Chemicals in products and materials provide large societal and health benefits, however some chemicals are ubiquitous in the environment and some have shown to cause adverse effects in biota including humans. Sustainable use of chemicals and efficient regulatory and policy actions requires expertise and tools for early identification of potentially hazardous chemicals. This project aims at developing tools to characterize and identify polymers as new and/or emerging risk chemicals (NERCs). Polymers are often overlooked in risk assessment of chemicals and here we will focus on fluorinated polymers that could degrade to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Your task will be to investigate these chemicals combining experimental environmental fate and effects studies with AI methodologies for smart text mining of big data and machine learning based modelling. Results are needed for national and international regulators and policymakers to address EU policy under the Green Deal and the Chemicals Strategy aiming for zero pollution and a toxic free environment. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers at Örebro University and from different disciplines and you are expected to play an active role in interdisciplinary cooperation.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in environmental science with focus on cumulative effects of environmental impacts in the Arctic

The ongoing green transition to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and mitigate climate change has resulted in increased pressure on land and natural resources in northern Sweden. In a new geopolitical environment, the goal is to ensure the availability of clean energy and important natural resources. The results are enormous environmental, societal, and economic consequences, challenging the overall goals of sustainable development. Although Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are carried out before decisions are made, significant challenges remain if the overall societal needs for energy and resources are to be balanced against the cultural, economic, and social needs and rights of local and indigenous communities. Often some effects of a single, specific project are considered, but not the cumulative effects and consequences of other past, present, and future activities. One consequence of this is the increasingly rapid loss of reindeer grazing land to external actors.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student: chemistry with a focus on environmental chemistry

Per- and polyfluorinated substances, commonly referred to as PFAS, is a group of highly stable compounds which can be widely distributed in the environment. PFAS are present in a wide range of products and when these products reach their end-of-life, the PFAS substances will end up in our household waste, and subsequently in the waste incineration process. However, the fate of PFAS in the incineration process is unknown, and will therefore be explored in this project. You will study the fate and degradation of PFAS in the waste incineration process, and what potential byproducts are formed. The main objective is to assess to what extent the incineration process may serve as a source of dispersal, reduction and destruction of PFAS, while elucidating the fate of these compounds. This will mainly be performed by combustion trials at different operation conditions and thorough characterization of resulting residuals. The research tasks will be conducted in close collaboration with our industry partner Umeå Energi, and will include combustion experiments in lab set-ups, using a simulated waste fuel. Parts of the practical work may be carried out on-site at the Umeå Energi combined heat and power plant.

PhD position summary/title: 1-2 PhD students in Computing Science with a focus on Distributed Cloud Computing

We are seeking two PhD students to join the Autonomous Distributed Systems (ADS) Lab at Umeå University (Sweden) to work on research into distributed Cloud-Edge systems. Cloud computing infrastructures are increasingly distributed, consisting of powerful centralized data centres connected with multiple geographically dispersed Edge nodes. They host Cloud applications, which are typically composed of multiple containerized services that can themselves be distributed and auto-scaled across the Cloud-Edge infrastructure fabric.  This project seeks to develop the theory and models necessary to create a platform that accurately simulates a Cloud-Edge infrastructure together with the dynamic applications that are scheduled across it. The platform will be validated against a physical testbed, and used to develop and evaluate novel autonomous resource management mechanisms that may consider network offloading, scheduling to improving usage of sustainable energy resources, optimal placement of FaaS services, etc. This work is therefore positioned at the intersection between simulation systems and distributed control systems.
