The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a Postdoc Research Associate to NGS and Bioinformatics unit of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). The VDL is engaged daily in missions of service, instruction and research. They provide comprehensive and cutting edge diagnostic services. Daily case work processed by the VDL includes more than 80,000 field cases per year submitted by veterinarians and animal owners from Iowa and throughout the United States, as well as research samples from both the University and private sectors.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Research Associate
The postdoctoral research will be tasked with probing the role of F-actin regulatory proteins such as formins and Arp2/3 in controlling directed cell migration during wound healing in response to complex environmental cues including both extracellular matrix alignment and gradients in mechanical stiffness. This project is funded by NIH R01 GM143302 and will be advised by Ian Schneider, Associate Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering. The researcher will use siRNA and CRISPR to generate knock-downs and knock-outs of actin regulatory proteins in skin epithelial, mesenchymal and amoeboid model cell systems. The researcher will characterize F-actin regulatory protein localization, cytoskeletal structure and cell migration via live cell microscopy and immunofluorescence and mRNA levels and expression of F-actin regulatory proteins using qPCR and western blotting. The researcher will be expected to communicate results in both written and oral presentations. Specific duties include review of the relevant literature; design and execution of experiments; development of quantitative analysis approaches and interpretation of experimental results; adherence to safe laboratory procedures; supervision of graduate and undergraduate students; preparation of manuscripts and presentations; assisting the PI in the preparation of technical reports. There is a possibility of renewing the position for two additional years. Emphasis of this position will be bovine medicine (primarily dairy) with exposure to other food animal species.
The person in this position will gain production medicine-based clinical and applied research experience, while working with clients of the ISU Veterinary Field Services unit, ISU Food Animal and Camelid Hospital, and the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Position responsibilities include primary commitments to service, instruction of senior veterinary students and junior pathology residents. Pathology service case work includes necropsy and biopsy service and case coordination. The candidate will participate in the weekend on-call duty as part of this service. The candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and respectfully both verbally and in writing with clientele, veterinary, graduate, and undergraduate students, staff, and colleagues, and model professional and ethical behavior to facilitate instruction of professional behavior to students. The department provides a complete necropsy service for the diverse species submitted to the ISU small and large animal clinics. These necropsy cases provide material for instructing senior veterinary students and junior pathology residents in necropsy techniques and lesion interpretation. The department also has a busy and expanding biopsy service with submissions from the ISU clinics as well as practicing veterinarians in Iowa and the surrounding region. The successful candidate would be expected to participate in biopsy service activities and assist in training junior pathology residents.
