Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral studies in in defining Epithelial Tumor Cell Niches (scholarship)
The current project will be centered around characterizing changes in local cell-cell networks during early esophageal epithelial transformation. We have recently described how the esophageal epithelium is regionalized, and how local cell-cell networks and transcriptional signatures contribute to epithelial homeostasis. We are now interested in understanding how these local cell architectures change during tumor initiation. This work will include characterization of epithelial, stromal and immune cell populations in esophageal tissue using a variety of mouse models, organoid co-cultures and spatial sequencing technologies to identify relevant cell-cell interactions.
We seek a curious, highly motivated, and creative postdoc with a strong background in cell or tissue biology. The ideal candidate should have practical experience working with mouse models and analyzing sequencing data. Experience with organoid cultures and molecular biology is a strength. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (in English written and verbal) is required. Emphasis will be also placed on personal suitability, fitting well into the current research group.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular Cancer Therapy
Our research is centred upon antimetabolite cancer therapies, which remain standard-of-care for many cancers including leukaemias. However, their efficacy can vary, and the underlying molecular mechanisms can remain unclear. Thus, we aim to further our basic understanding of how these agents exert their therapeutic effects, to understand why in some instances they work and in others they do not, and leverage this information to design therapy improvements. In this project, we will focus upon the treatment of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
The successful candidate will employ an array of biochemical, molecular and cell biology-focused approaches, together with collaborating with our clinical partners in the Herold lab, (Department of Women’s and Children’s Health), to fulfil the translational research goals of this project.
This call is part of the KI-SciLifeLab Clinical Translational Postdoc Program with the purpose of promoting interaction between the SciLifeLab research environment and clinical research environments at Karolinska Institutet. The postdocs that are recruited to the program will form a network with the support of the SciLifeLab Committee KI.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Chromatin Biology and Transcriptional Regulation
The Baranello Lab – Drawing from our expertise in the fields of topoisomerase and cancer biology, we aim to answer fundamental questions about how transcription, replication and DNA topology are functionally coordinated in human cells. We use state-of-the-art approaches to assess transcriptomic, epigenomic and replisomic profiles, as well as molecular biology, advanced microscopy and drug screens to understand how topoisomerase regulation affects fundamental nuclear processes (key lab references: Baranello et al. Cell 2016; Wiegard et al. Molecular Cell 2021; Das et al. Molecular Cell 2022; Cameron et al. Science Advances 2023). The overall aim is to reveal novel cancer therapy targets and improved strategies for personalized treatment.
Recently we have identified a protein complex called “topoisome” in which the oncoprotein MYC recruits and increases the catalytic activities of both Topoisomerase 1 and 2 to promote high rates of transcriptional (Das et al. Molecular Cell 2022). The successful candidate will play a leading role in a full-time research project funded by the European Research Council Consolidator Grant, focused to address the functional role of the topoisome during transcription. Specifically we want to study the coordination of the topoisome and the transcriptional machinery. The outcome of this work is predicted to inspire a new strategy to target MYC in cancer, which will be tested in MYC-driven cancer models. This multidisciplinary project involves master biochemistry, master molecular biology, proteomics/genomics, and computational analysis. The postdoc will plan and execute experiments, analyze data, interpret, and present the results, supervise students as well as write scientific articles, initially under partial supervision but with greater independence going forward.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Circadian organ communication and proteomics
Circadian rhythms are controlled by internal clocks present in all organs, with the liver playing a central role in coordinating rhythms across the body through secreted signals. Preliminary findings suggest that the liver influences gene expression in other tissues, such as fat, via time-dependent secretion of specific proteins. This project will combine expertise in chronobiology and cutting-edge proteomics to identify and characterize these liver-derived signals. The overall goal is to understand how the circadian system coordinates communication between organs to maintain physiological balance.
- Perform LC/MS based proteomic analyses of circulating proteins and assess their impact on organs in mouse models and cell cultures.
- Analyze and interpret omics data using bioinformatic pipelines in Python and R.
- Perform experiments in cell culture and animal models to validate the findings.
- Coordinate the collaboration between the chronobiology lab (led by Dr. Paul Petrus) and the proteomics lab (led by Dr. Amir Saei)

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website
The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.
The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.
The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.
The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
