(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in modelling soil carbon cycling dynamics
Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in the decomposition of organic matter, contributing to the release of CO2 into the atmosphere. The marked temporal variability of hydro-climatic conditions, where extended periods of drought are followed by rainfall events, drives pronounced fluctuations in these carbon emissions. Over the last 20 years, substantial progress has been achieved in comprehending this complex system. However, current models still utilize outdated descriptions of compounds and processes in soils and lack a mechanistic representation of microbial responses to cycles of drying and rewetting.
This project aims to unravel the impact of climate on soil organic carbon dynamics, focussing on the integration of recently uncovered insights into modelling regarding the increased frequency of droughts, more extreme drying and rewetting events, and elevated temperatures. A key task involves the integration of key microbial and carbon compartments from the models ECOSMMARTS and RothC into the hydro-biogeochemical model HYDRUS to provide a more accurate representation of microbial processes and their influence on emission/sequestration across soil vertical profiles.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow in Biology
How do migratory birds perform their migration? Which are the physiological limitations to how birds can manage their migration? Are birds somehow limited by their thermoregulation during long flights?
By using state-of-the-art tracking technology developed at Lund University, we have recently discovered a most astonishing altitudinal flight behaviour in migratory birds. Before, birds have been thought to preferably migrate below 2,000 m and fly steadily at a given altitude. However, the birds in our studies did not only fly extremely high (up to 6-8000 m), but they also changed their flight altitudes more often than expected. Intriguingly, flight altitudes changed in a systematic way, being 2-4000 m higher during diurnal compared to the nocturnal parts of the flights. So why did all these birds cruise at seemingly favorable altitudes for 10 hours at night, just to climb several thousand meters soon before the sun rises? Is there something with the physiology of the bird that makes the bird fly this high during diurnal flight? What is the costs of this behaviour?
The observed altitude change between nocturnal and diurnal flights opens up for a number of new questions and hypotheses regarding migration ecology and physiology of birds. This postdoc will work in an experimental setup (birds flying in a wind tunnel) to study physiological costs and constraints related to the observed extreme diel cycles in flight altitudes.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in environmental science and micropollutants
Incorrect use or inappropriate recycling of millions of tons of waste such as incineration residues and construction and demolition wastes threaten to create new pathways for pollutants and raise background levels. Robust risk assessment methodologies and guidance tailored to circular use are needed to prevent this. In our interdisciplinary research and development project at Lund University we aim to develop these together with partners from Linné university, Rise and stakeholders. The project covers studying chemical properties of waste, mobility of metals and PAH, as well as environmental exposure, ecotoxicity and bioavailability of these contaminants. In consultation with authorities, we adapt or revise existing risk assessment models and guidelines that the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, County Administrative Boards and relevant industries have developed for recycling of waste in construction in the past.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Physics; Nanoscale X-ray diffraction for ferroelectric domain dynamics
The postdoc project will develop nanoscale X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods to image domain dynamics in ferroelectric materials. These are characterized by the existence of domains in which there is an aligned polarization, similar to the aligned magnetic domains in ferromagnetics. Ferroelectric materials are used and developed for a wide range of applications, such as memories and computations. The ferroelectric behavior is largely governed by the dynamics of the domains, which have a size in the range of tens of nm to several micron.
In recent years, the spatial resolution of nanoscale X-ray diffraction methods has become sufficient to image individual domains, giving a unique possibility to study their dynamics for instance during switching. The NanoMAX beamline at the MAX IV synchrotron, the world’s first fourth-generation synchrotron, offers a unique combination of high flux and spatial resolution with excellent facilities for in situ studies.
The position is a collaboration between the NanoLund, the division of Synchrotron Radiation Research (SRR) and the NanoMAX beamline at MAX IV. The postdoc will spend 50% of the time at NanoLund & SRR performing research within the project, and 50% at NanoMAX working with beamline development and user support.
The postdoc will collaborate with various groups synthesizing ferroelectric materials and devices, primarily within the NanoLund research center. In particular, the postdoc will develop methods and beamline instrumentation for in situ imaging of the ferroelectric domains during switching. The candidate will have significant freedom to influence the direction of the project, and is expected to take initiatives and drive the project quite independently.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Migration Ethics
The postdoctoral position is connected to the project “Faith-Based Refugee Relief in Europe: Connecting the Empirical and the Ethical (FABRIC)”, funded by a European Research Council Starting Grant. FABRIC aims to understand and utilize the moral insights and the moral ideas that faith-based refugee relief organizations develop in practice for the cross-disciplinary debate about the ethics of forced migration in Europe. Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have been at the forefront of the challenge of forced migration, preventing the collapse of the infrastructures of care, combatting racist discourse and religious discrimination. Yet there is very little knowledge about the refugee relief of these FBOs so their significance for the ethics of migration has been neither analyzed nor assessed.
FABRIC addresses this lack by conducting a comprehensive and comparative empirical exploration of FBOs, covering activities by FBOs from all three Abrahamic faiths in mono- and multi-religious settings across Europe. Countering the lack of interaction between empirical and evaluative approaches so characteristic of the study of forced migration, this exploration enquires into the conditions, constraints, and consequences of practicing justice. It offers a concrete account of faith-based refugee relief in order to formulate a concept of mobility justice that considers cross-connections between social, racial, and climate justice on regional, national, and global scales.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website
Lund University is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.
Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.
Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.
The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
