14 Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway

The primary objective of the postdoctoral position is to qualify the appointee for work in top academic positions. Teaching and/or other qualifying duties might be included if the appointee lacks such experience. The UiB-contract may, under certain conditions, be extended by up to one year if a fellow acquires sufficient funding from other sources than SEAS. For all SEAS fellows, a Personal Career Development Plan (PCDP) is to be developed jointly by the fellow, supervisor, and co-supervisor by the end of Month 2 of the fellowship, including a plan for the individual research budget, and information on additional funding where applicable.

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. You cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution. The fixed term period for the position is three years, with the possibility of an extension of the period with up to one year if a research-related stay abroad shall be included in the employment period.

• The researcher will be a member of the research group of which the topic/project belongs to
• The salary shall if possible be 100 % covered by external financing
• The researcher shall actively contribute to attract external funding to the research project, both for her/his own position and other positions, from the Research Council of Norway, EU and other sources
• The researcher is expected to have her/his research activity financed by the project of the researcher and the projects of the associated research group
• The Head of Department may allocate work for the Researcher related to specific research projects
• The researcher may participate in committee work and other administrative tasks within the University of Bergen
• The researcher has no teaching duties, but is expected to supervise master students and PhD candidates when this is a natural part of the research activity of the research group
• The researcher may apply for competence promotion according to the regulations for promotions 
• The basis for the position ceases if no further project funding and new law on state officials etc. on dismissal and preferential rights will be applied to permanent employees

DeuteroNoise is an international collaborative and interdisciplinary project whose main goal is to improve our understanding of the soundscape in five European basins and its effects on marine invertebrate deuterostomes (MIDs), a matter of pressing urgency on which there is still relatively scarce information. To reach this goal, the consortium will undertake a comprehensive analysis of the level and type of noise present in different basins together with a multi-approach study of behavioral, morphological and genetic effects generated by threshold noise pollution level in a large panel of species. As members of this consortium the Chatzigeorgiou and Chourrout groups will work closely with our international partners to characterise the effects of underwater noise on different aspects of the biology of tunicate species. This project will characterise at multiple biological levels (from the molecules to the behaving organisms) the effects of low and high levels of underwater noise on the tunicates Ciona intestinalis and Oikopleura dioica. The first part of the project will focus on leveraging cutting-edge quantitative behavioral analysis methods to determine the effects of underwater noise on larval and adult stages of C. intestinalis and O. dioica. The second part will make use of cutting-edge microscopy methods (light and possibly electron microscopy) to characterize the effects of underwater noise on the development of C. intestinalis and O. dioica. The third part of the project will leverage modern methods to analyze the genome and transcriptome of C. intestinalis and O. dioica embryos, larvae and adults exposed to different levels of underwater noise. The researcher scientist that will be recruited will be jointly supervised by the two Group Leaders.It is expected that the successful applicant also collaborates with other members of the consortium, including students and postdocs.

The Faculty of Law, University of Bergen, offers a postdoctoral researcher position. The position is connected to the project ‘Life and Work in Balance: Legal responses to working life in times of change and crisis’ (LaW-BALANCE). The project concerns labour law, social security law and discrimination law, and the relation between EU/EEA law and Norwegian law. It is not a requirement that the person appointed has experience with research in these legal areas. However, language skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are a prerequisite. The position is a fixed-term contract. The term of employment for the postdoctoral position is 3 years, which can be extended to 4 years if the applicant is qualified to teach in compulsory courses in the Master’s program at the Faculty of Law. Starting date is 15 September 2023 or later upon agreement.

The project is motivated by the observation that the oceans harbour half the global primary production but produce only 2% of human food and 6% of dietary protein. We will use that insight to take a step back, consider fisheries as a food system, and deliberately try to ignore current practices and beliefs as we reimagine their role: What would fisheries look like if UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the Convention on Biological Diversity were allowed to define the objective as maximizing food production while minimizing footprint?
