(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in Salt Tectonics and Sedimentation

The ZechTec project is a multidisciplinary project integrating geophysical and geological data to provide a basin-scale synthesis of Zechstein Supergroup salt deposition and tectonics, and the impact these jointly have on sedimentation. The project integrates subsurface analysis of industrystandard seismic and well data from the Central North Sea with physical and numerical modelling. The project is led by Rob Gawthorpe and Atle Rotevatn at the University of Bergen, Chris Jackson at the University of Manchester, and Oliver Duffy at University of Texas at Austin. It is financed by the Research Council of Norway. The research will investigate the salt tectonic evolution of the Central North Sea region using 3D seismic and well datasets. The researcher will: i) conduct seismic- and well-based mapping of salt stratigraphy, salt structures, and salt-influenced stratigraphic intervals, ii) determine the geometry and growth of key salt structures, iii) explore links between salt tectonics and sedimentation; iv) undertake numerical modelling of salt tectonics and coeval deposition to test hypotheses derived from subsurface work, and v) tie spatial variations in styles of salt tectonics and sedimentation to the regional tectonic evolution of the Central North Sea.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher position: Underwater noise and its effects on marine invertebrate deuterostomes

DeuteroNoise is an international collaborative and interdisciplinary project whose main goal is to improve our understanding of the soundscape in five European basins and its effects on marine invertebrate deuterostomes (MIDs), a matter of pressing urgency on which there is still relatively scarce information. To reach this goal, the consortium will undertake a comprehensive analysis of the level and type of noise present in different basins together with a multi-approach study of behavioral, morphological and genetic effects generated by threshold noise pollution level in a large panel of species. As members of this consortium the Chatzigeorgiou and Chourrout groups will work closely with our international partners to characterise the effects of underwater noise on different aspects of the biology of tunicate species. This project will characterise at multiple biological levels (from the molecules to the behaving organisms) the effects of low and high levels of underwater noise on the tunicates Ciona intestinalis and Oikopleura dioica. The first part of the project will focus on leveraging cutting-edge quantitative behavioral analysis methods to determine the effects of underwater noise on larval and adult stages of C. intestinalis and O. dioica. The second part will make use of cutting-edge microscopy methods (light and possibly electron microscopy) to characterize the effects of underwater noise on the development of C. intestinalis and O. dioica. The third part of the project will leverage modern methods to analyze the genome and transcriptome of C. intestinalis and O. dioica embryos, larvae and adults exposed to different levels of underwater noise. The researcher scientist that will be recruited will be jointly supervised by the two Group Leaders. It is expected that the successful applicant also collaborates with other members of the consortium, including students and postdocs.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher on the contribution of fisheries to sustainable food systems

The position is part of a project funded by the Research Council of Norway as a Collaborative and Knowledge-Building Project (KSP) between academia (University of Bergen), industry (Fiskebåt), a non-governmental organization (Nature and Youth), and a governmental management institution (the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries). The international partners are RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, University of Umeå (Sweden), the University of Vigo (Spain), and the University of Washington (USA). The project is motivated by the observation that the oceans harbour half the global primary production but produce only 2% of human food and 6% of dietary protein. We will use that insight to take a step back, consider fisheries as a food system, and deliberately try to ignore current practices and beliefs as we reimagine their role: What would fisheries look like if UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the Convention on Biological Diversity were allowed to define the objective as maximizing food production while minimizing footprint?
