The doctoral student will participate in a project focusing on wastewater-based epidemiology of illicit drugs and environmental pollutants using chromatography hyphenated high resolution mass spectrometry. Analytical methods will be developed for targeted, suspect and nontarget workflows of wastewater samples. Other specific tasks include: setting up a laboratory workflow to systematically integrate relevant information, plan and conducting field sampling, maintenance of analytical instruments, perform chemical analysis and data analysis and disseminating the results. PhD position summary/title: PhD in visualization and media technology with focus on immersive visualization
The goal of this project (and this employment) is to develop new methods for synthesizing realistic images of real urban environments. We aim to bridge the gap between large-scale structures and close-up details using, for example, image data captured by municipalities through aerial and drone photogrammetry, as well as high-resolution photographs of building facades and urban environments. The outcome should provide realism in the natural scale of humans for VR and AR applications. The large-scale structures, metadata from databases, and high-quality models and textures are processed using a hybrid model of rule-based techniques and deep learning (Deep Learning) to generate realistic images for AR/VR users in real-time applications, such as through Unreal Engine.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computer Science
The position is part of a newly funded research project across four research groups and an industrial advisory board with representatives across Swedish industry sectors such as automotive, telecommunications, security, and aerospace. The project investigates methods for the design, automated orchestration, and dynamic adaptation of software to enable its autonomous, efficient, and secure execution in dynamic, heterogeneous real-time embedded and edge-cloud systems. The research intended for this specific open position is on the development of rigorous modeling, analysis, and optimization techniques for cyber-physical and real-time embedded systems where computing and communication is extended to the edge and cloud. The developed techniques should support different design and runtime trade-offs related to control quality, real-time performance, security, cost, and reliability. An overarching research goal is to ensure the dynamic characteristics of wireless/cellular communication and edge-cloud orchestration become an integral part of the overall cyber-physical systems design process. The project will consider the requirements and characteristics of real-life automotive applications, particularly related to automated driving and driver assistance technologies. It is also expected that test benches and demonstrators are set up to assess the practical applicability of the research results related to optimizing compute and data-intensive mission-critical applications through edge and cloud offloading.

At the Department of Thematic Studies (TEMA), major societal issues are studied and analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective. At Tema Environmental change, research is conducted with a broad focus on environmental pollution, climate change and societal interactions. Tema Environmental Change hosts the research program “Virtual Worlds: The transformative capacity of digital technologies in climate and biodiversity governance (ViWo)”, which is an interdisciplinary research program that studies the development, use, and sense-making around new digital technologies – such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or digital twins – to contribute to societal transformations to achieve climate and biodiversity goals.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Natural Language Processing within WASP Graduate School
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time. The research for this position will be within the project ‘Efficient Modularisation and Adaptation of Large Language Models’. This project aims to develop methods for dissecting large language models into modules that encapsulate functional capabilities such as language understanding and knowledge storage, and can be trained and updated independently of other model parts. The project will create a framework for the targeted adaptation of these modules and evaluate its effectiveness in settings where training data is relatively scarce. The focus is on natural language processing for medium-resource languages.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Students in Applied Physics, with focus on Organic Photonics and Nanooptics
We seek applicants with strong interest in, and preferably experience of, the relevant fields of the proposed research directions. For position 1, relevant topics include nanooptics, plasmonics, optical metasurfaces, and organic electronic materials including electrochemically tunable systems. Meritorious experience includes nanofabrication (electron-beam lithography) and microfabrication, relevant characterization and measurement methods, electrochemical redox tuning and optical modeling. For position 2, relevant topics include optics (e.g. optical cavities, radiative cooling, solar heating, structural coloration) as well as cellulose and other forest-based materials. Meritorious experience and skills include materials development, device fabrication, micro and/or nanofabrication, characterization and measurement methods and optical modeling.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in psychology
You have graduated at Master’s level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. To be accepted to the PhD program in psychology, the applicant is required to have completed 90 credits, at least 30 of which are advanced courses in a subject in the behavioral sciences or another discipline of central importance for the relevant research environment. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement. Completed courses and/or documented research experience in subjects that are relevant for the research project (e.g., decision making, social psychology, personality psychology, advanced research methods and statistical analysis) is a relevant qualification. We are expecting that you have the ambition to learn advanced quantitative research methods and relevant forms of statistical analysis, particularly for longitudinal methods. Personal potential to do this is a particularly important qualification. Relevant knowledge, experience, and interest should be described and, to the extent possible, documented.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in medical science linked to the research school “Nära Vård”
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. During the doctoral education, you as a doctoral student are expected to conduct research independently under supervision. The project focuses on e-Health at home for patients with heart failure. The number of patients with heart failure is increasing and self-care is crucial to improve the patients’ quality of life and prognosis. The overall purpose of the project is to evaluate a community-based home-based self-care support programme using e-Health technology for monitoring of lung fluid status and virtual home visits in patients with heart failure. The specific aims of the project are: 1) To evaluate the feasibility of a new home-based self-care support programme for patients with heart failure, 2) To examine effects of the programme, and 3) To explore barriers to and facilitators for implementation of the programme and possibilities for implementation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in medical science
The PhD project consists of four sub-studies, which the doctoral student will carry out in collaboration with other researchers and doctoral students. The aim of the project is to investigate what effect adapted exercise gaming (virtual play to improve physical activity) in the home can have for inactive people with chronic disease. Using exergames is one of the new interventions for the person who is homebound and physically inactive. Based on results from previous studies, we have recently developed a new exergame (Heart Farming) together with patients. In the project, the doctoral student will work with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, which includes statistical data analysis and the conduct and analysis of interviews. The project is organized within the graduate school “Nära Vård”, which is run in collaboration between Linköping University, Dalarna University, Jönköping University, and Örebro University

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Soft Neural Electrodes
The PhD student will develop a novel neural interface technology based on soft and deformable conductors and functional materials. The research will include materials and devices based on soft and elastic electronic composite materials to facilitate close integration with neural tissue and thereby enabling the translation between biological and electronic signals. Typical composite materials comprise metallic nanomaterials and soft elastomers. The PhD studies will include laser processing of materials and components in a cleanroom facility, together with the characterization of electrical/mechanical material properties and device performance. Applications of the developed technology will be explored in collaboration with external partners. The work is part of an ERC CoG project and will be highly collaborative. PhD position summary/title: PhD student in autonomous systems
Machine learning and optimal control are core techniques to enable an autonomous system to plan and act in dynamic and uncertain environments where actors enter and leave the environment dynamically and where the behavior of surrounding actors is uncertain. The development of theory, models, and methods to solve this problem contains major research challenges. This is a very active field of research, driven also by the development of autonomous vehicles that need to act in environments with different levels of complexity. In this project we research new methods in machine learning and optimal control, and how they can be combined to generate robust and resilient methods for planning and control of autonomous systems. A core research question is how the behavior of the surrounding environment, e.g., pedestrians, cyclists, cars, can be predicted, and how they influence each other, and how this can be used to make probabilistic predictions of future behavior. These predictions should then be used to obtain proactive decision-making and control. The basic research and theoretical models will be evaluated in real-life datasets, e.g., in automated driving.
