(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral students in computer science

The PhD students will be working in the research group of Susanna de Rezende, where the focus is on computational complexity and algorithms. At the heart of computational complexity theory is the quest to understand the nature of efficient computation. What makes a problem computationally hard or easy? How can we show that every algorithm that solves a certain problem must necessarily consume a large amount of resources (such as time or memory, say)? The study of the potential and limits of efficient computation is about foundational, mathematical, research, but research results in computational complexity theory have had major impact in other areas of computer science and other scientific disciplines, and have given rise to some of the most important open problems in modern mathematics.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in mathematics

The research will focus on optimization, operator theory, frequency estimation, convex analysis and a number of applications, for example algorithms for extracting data from Nuclear Magnetic Resconance measurements. The position is partially funded by the VR-grant titled Multivariable estemation of exponential parameters, which is about the design of non-convex functionals used for finding sparse solutions to ill-posed linear systems, as well as optimization problems where a low rank matrix is the sought object. Such techniques are useful in a number of areas, and in this project we will primarily be focused on estimation of exponential parameters, which in turn has connections to multidimensional Hankel operators and questions in matrix and operator theory. A concrete application which is part of this project is information retrieval from NMR-measurements of e.g. brain tissue, with connections to medical research. Nevertheless the key focus of the research is on theoretical questions in the area of mathematical analysis, but a certain amount of implementation and evaluation of numerical algorithms will also be part of the research tasks.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Microbiology in the medical area

The focus of the Hauryliuk lab is molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis on the ribosome. We work on deciphering the molecular mechanisms implicated in bacterial virulence, tolerance to stress, resistance to antibiotics, and refractivity to phage infection. We use a powerful combination microbiological, biochemical, functional genomics and structural biology techniques, and work in close collaboration with the bioinformatics group of Gemma C. Atkinson (evolutionary bioinformatics and high-throughout AlphaFold2-driven structural analyses, see https://atkinson-lab.com/ ). The joint lab is based in the Department of Experimental Medical Sciences in the Biomedical Centre (BMC) in Lund. (12) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in biology

This PhD student will together with researchers from different disciplines and stakeholders, develop scenarios for restoration of ecological complexity in case-studies linked to existing Swedish eco parks, i.e., landscapes with forests of high natural values and special conservation ambitions. Terrestrial ecosystems throughout Europe face the intertwined threats of climate change and biodiversity loss. Restoring ecological complexity – rewilding – could be a solution to mitigate negative effects by using natural processes to adapt ecosystems to climate change and support their biodiversity. The European wildE project aims to assess and improve the potential of climate-smart, nature-based ecological restoration. It addresses the links between climate and biodiversity in close association with the socio-economic dimension of large-scale restoration, by comparing scenarios from various land uses, assessing associated risks and opportunities, and exploring new approaches to make ecological restoration a socially and economically viable solution for local actors and communities. The PhD-student in this project, will work transdisciplinarily together with researchers from multiple disciplines, Sweden’s largest forest owner and other stakeholders, to generate and evaluate scenarios for restoration of ecological complexity – rewilding – to benefit both biodiversity and social values.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website

Lund University  is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.

Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.

The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
