This position is part of SDU’s initiative to develop energy-efficient AI accelerators based on alternative model architectures that cannot be leveraged as efficiently on conventional computing platforms such as GPUs, CPUs and TPUs.

A PhD position starting November 1, 2025 (with some flexibility in both directions) is available at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) for research in an exciting project in algorithmic aspects of cheminformatics. The position is founded by the Challenge Programme of the Novo Nordisk Foundation: “Mathematical Modelling for Microbial Community Induced Metabolic Diseases”, led by Prof. Daniel Merkle.
The overall research project is based on the novel application of formalisms, algorithms, and computational methods from computer science to the design of microbial communities, ultimately for use in health science. The goal of this PhD project is to expand on these computational methods and their formal foundations and to create efficient algorithms and implementations of them.
We are seeking an excellent and highly motivated individual with a MSc degree in computer science or a related subject. The ideal candidate has strong familiarity with one or more of the following areas: algorithmics, graph transformation and algorithm engineering. Exposure to systems chemistry or systems biology is an asset but not a must. Proven competences in programming and ease with formal thinking are a necessity.
The research group in Algorithmic Cheminformatics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SDU offers a dynamic research environment, comprising two full professors, one associate professor, one assistant professor, one postdoc, and a large number of PhD students.
The project includes strong partnerships with the University of Leipzig (Bioinformatics, Prof. Peter Stadler), the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research in Leipzig (Molecular Systems Biology, Prof. Martin von Bergen) and the University of Vienna (Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Prof. Christoph Flamm), who may potentially host the PhD student for research visits.

We are currently extending our team working on the MADE REACT project which focus on challenges within the design of robot solution for resilient high-mix low-volume manufacturing.
The aim of this PhD project is to enable fast setup of robot manipulators to complete advanced manufacturing tasks by the use of digital models. This should be accomplished using methods such as reinforcement learning that should be initialized with information from human demonstrations. The developed method should be applied to the manipulation of flexible objects based on both visual and tactile information. Similarly, while colonial, gendered and racialized travel writing tropes have been challenged or (at times) eliminated in current travel media, other features of earlier travel discourses linger on (‘authentic’ travel, adventure, exoticism, tourism).

The project explores how moral reasons to worry about inequality and poverty are transformed when wealth becomes extreme and aims to build new theory on the morality of extreme wealth. The project aims at three significant academic contributions: (1) to explore and map out distinctive moral reasons to be concerned with extreme wealth from the perspective of distributive justice, (2) to analyse the role of individual responsibility in a theory of extreme wealth morality, and (3) to evaluate the moral obligations of the extremely wealthy in a society with existing injustices.
