PhD position summary/title: PhD Instruments to enhance the transition to sustainable Dutch rural landscapes
In this PhD position, you will look for answers to these questions. In doing so, you will be collaborating with two other PhD students, one working on the environmental dimension, the other one working on the social dimension (from the farmers’ perspective). Prevailing methods are document analyses and interviews, but you will also prepare input for an agent-based model (which requires the ability to reduce complex instruments to simple, quantitative variables to which artificial, stylized land owners/users can respond). Additionally, the analysis of all these instruments will ultimately result in a set of policy guidelines for practice.
Deadline : Open until filled

PhD position summary/title: PhD Farmers perceptions and response to transition to sustainable Dutch rural landscapes
In this PhD position, you will look for factors that allow us to anticipate farmers reactions to particular policies. In doing so, you will be collaborating with two other PhD students, one working on the environmental dimension, the other one working on the legal/policy dimension to support this transition. Prevailing methods are interviews, surveys, analysis of existing data. Eventually, all obtained knowledge will be captured in an agent-based model that allows the rural development in response to particular (spatial) policies. Additionally, the analysis and exploration of farmers response will ultimately result in a set of guidelines for practice.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: studying the aerodynamics of Dipteran insect flight
As a PhD candidate, you will study the unsteady aerodynamics of Dipteran flight, to answer how the aero-elastic flapping wing system of various Diptera species are optimized for flight efficiency and maneuverability. This will then provide both fundamental insights into the aerodynamics of rapidly oscillating wings, and bio-inspiration for the development of flying robots.

PhD position summary/title: PhD researcher – Integrative and inclusive governance of healthy climate adaptation in Dutch rural regions
Regions are increasingly confronted with implementing various transitions including climate change adaptation, health, agriculture, biodiversity, and energy. However, these transitions are often poorly integrated, resulting in missed opportunities and negative consequences. Three structural characteristics of regional governance systems hinder integration: fragmentation within the governmental administration, focus on the short term benefits and actions, and exclusion of important stakeholders such as marginalized groups. This PhD project will contribute to advancing the scientific and societal basis for developing regional governance systems that are better able to develop and implement climate change adaptation and health solutions in a connective, forward-looking and inclusive manner.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in the effects of plant-based meat-analogues on cardiometabolic and intestinal health in humans
The PhD position we have open is funded by the TKI project: Improving plant-based meat analogues by evaluating effects on human health. Consumers may report choosing plant-based meat analogues for health reasons, but few plant-based meat analogues have been developed with health benefits as first design criterion. Nevertheless, meat analogues are a growing novel food category, of which the knowledge regarding their impact on human health is very limited. The goal of this project is therefore to investigate the health effects of current meat analogues as part of a healthy diet and to develop strategies for health supporting product characteristics that still consider sustainability.

PhD position summary/title: PhD researcher / Junior lecturer in crisis and disaster studies
The Sociology of Development and Change Group (SDC) is looking for an outstanding candidate for a position as Junior Lecturer (40% of time) cum PhD candidate (60% of time) working on (climate) crisis, mobility and humanitarian governance. (Forced) migration and human mobility as a result of conflict, climate change and disaster are among the most pressing concerns of this time. In the past decades, the number of people on the move due to crises, within and between countries and in both rural and urban areas, has increased and so has the number of humanitarian actors and forms of governance addressing these issues. Moreover, major changes over the past decades shape how these dynamics play out, including the rise of populist and nationalist politics; widespread urbanisation; the dynamics of radical insurgency and the Global War On Terror; the use and effects of social media; and the intensification of governance and surveillance systems through digital technologies (biometrics, blockchain etc.). These dynamics further intersect with an urgent global environmental crisis, major inequalities within and between societies, and a need to confront and remedy past injustices (decolonization – gender – environmental injustice – resource extraction).

PhD position summary/title: PhD position How does bioturbation influence soil hydro-physical dynamics and modify landscapes
We are hiring a PhD candidate for a 4-year project that aims to increase understanding and quantify the role that burrowing animals play in changing soil hydro-physical properties and soil erosion at field and landscape scales. Burrowing animals are known to be ecosystem engineers, and have been found to positively affect nutrient availability. However, the effects of bioturbation on soil hydro-physical dynamics, the evolution of soil structure and feedbacks or trade-offs between them are not well understood and quantified.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student Omega-3-fatty acids in gut-brain health
Are you interested in understanding the power of food in the brain performance? We are looking for a PhD candidate to work in a multidisciplinary project in collaboration between Wageningen University and Research, Utrecht University and several industrial partners. The project focuses on the role on brain health of dietary long chain unsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) EPA and DHA derived from sustainable (algae-derived) sources. In this project we would like to unravel in which form EPA and DHA present in foods are taken up by both the gut and the brain using in vitro and in vivo models. In vitro, a gut-immune model and blood brain barrier (BBB) model will be used. In vivo, the uptake of sustainable oils will be tested in a small clinical trial, as well as in a mouse model for Parkinson’s disease.

PhD position summary/title: Researcher PhD feed intake
We are looking for inspiring PhD candidates that are eager to improve the current animal breeding evaluation for feed intake in dairy cattle. This will be done in close cooperation with partners around the world and the dairy cattle breeding industry in the Netherlands. The collection of more and more feed intake data on dairy farms in the Netherlands allows to select for feed efficiency and provides opportunities to calculate novel traits. The aims of these PhD projects are 1) to develop a more advanced genetic evaluation model for feed intake in dairy cows, and 2) investigate the use of a mechanistic model to define novel breeding goal traits describing net efficiency of dairy cows.
