(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc multiphase flow simulations for water electrolysis

Green hydrogen is becoming an important ingredient in realizing the energy transition, by storing large amounts of intermittent electricity and as a base chemical. Water electrolysis is a convenient way to create hydrogen from water and renewable electricity. To aid commercial viability membraneless electrolysers, like those described in https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpowsour.2020.229364, are promising innovations to increase the energy efficiency. Small inter-electrode gaps decrease resistance so that water of lower conductivity can be used. This project will be part of a European consortium of several universities and a microfluidics company. High volume microfluidics will be used to treat wastewater and create hydrogen at the same time.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc on integrated photonics based sensors for Bragg peak localization using ultrasound

In 2016 30% of all deaths nation-wide were caused by cancer. This is often treated using x-ray therapy. Unfortunately, its wide deposition range causes unavoidable collateral damage to healthy surrounding tissue. A new treatment uses protons, which are deposited in a well-defined position. Unfortunately, patient movement and erroneous assumptions on tissue properties may lead to partial tumour treatment and healthy tissue irradiation. Our solution detects the proton deposition location in real-time using the interaction of protons and ultrasound contrast agents combined with ultra-sensitive opto-acoustic sensors. Your task comprises the modelling, design and experimental demonstration of the integrated photonics based ultrasound sensor. The project is a close cooperation between TNO and TU Delft in the fields of optics and acoustics and the Holland Proton Therapy Center, providing a unique basis for this groundbreaking work.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Low-power Embedded Smart Multi-sensor Platform

Future autonomous always-on smart Edge-IoT nodes must be able to sense a wide variety of stimuli from their environment, interpret the data, and trigger appropriate responses, while surviving on a minimal energy budget. Connecting ever more discrete sensors to a microcontroller-based read-out circuit on a PCB is not sustainable on the long term, because it increases complexity, size, power consumption and bill of materials of the system. Instead, we need a generic scalable, integrated, manufacturable and cost-effective approach for simultaneously sensing a multitude of parameters like humidity, gases, odors, motion, air pressure, and infrared light.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher on the removal of metallic fission particles from molten salt nuclear reactor fuels by flotation.

From molten salt reactor fuel valuable fission isotopes can be extracted, such as noble metals/platinoids and rare earths. One of the technologies to perform the extraction of solid fission isotopes is by introducing an inert, noble gas and the process of so-called flotation. The efficiency of extraction depends on a wide range of parameters, such as the fluid properties, the particle properties and the applied flow regime. In this project, the extraction process is studied at temperatures and conditions that are typical for molten salt reactors. To this purpose, the post-doctoral researcher will design a new experimental facility and investigate the extraction efficiency of metallic particles. Local quantities such as particle density and fluid velocity need to be studied to understand the physical phenomena causing flotation. Due to the elevated temperatures and the use of corrosive salts, a range of technological and scientific challenges need to be tackled. The post-doctoral researcher will cooperate with the principle investigator, our technical staff and the work shop.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position Perceiving Multi-Agent Interaction and Learning of Intuition Models

In this project we will take a holistic view on the interaction of mobile robots and humans, where we will consider multiple spatio-temporal granularities ranging from individual interactions to the interaction of a robot fleet with the humans in a city, and from short term (local) to long term (global) effects of the interaction. You will build the perception pipeline and employ reinforcement learning tools to create local and global intuition models of the interaction between robots and their environment, which take as input the perceived environment and the robot plans. Together with a PhD student, you will integrate these intuition models in uncertainty-aware trajectory optimization methods to compute safe interaction-aware trajectories for mobile robots. Within the project, you will be responsible for perception and learning and collaborate with two PhD students responsible for motion planning and task assignment.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position Scaling and integration of large solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) modules into multi-MW power plants for large cruise ships

Over the last decade, the application of fuel cells received increasing attention in shipping as a means to reduce emissions. The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is considered to be a promising option for long-haul shipping due to its ability to operate on both future and existing fuels. SOFCs are till date mainly used in stationary applications, thus there are many challenges and opportunities for effective integration in ships. Modular SOFC systems can be combined in a large-scale marine power plant for this purpose. However, it is not clear how SOFC systems can be scaled from the current kW scale to a multi-MW marine power plant suitable for integration in large cruise ships.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Laser assisted microfabrication of polymeric nanostructures to unveil 3D neuronal growth cone mechanobiology via super-resolution microscopy

This 2-years post-doctoral project will be focused on the mechanobiology of the neuronal growth cone, a mechanosensitive structure of neurons, and its interaction with 3D engineered biomaterials. The evolution of this bio-architecture, which motility is controlled by specialized nano-branches (filopodia) and their anchoring points (focal adhesions), was so far investigated almost exclusively on conventional 2D “bulky” glass slides, which are not representative of the brain tissue. The final goal will be to pioneer a reproducible 3D neuronal growth cone model by developing 3D printed sub-micrometric biomaterials able to simulate the geometrical and mechanical features in the brain. The successful applicant will therefore design and fabricate, by two-photon polymerization, 3D polymeric-nanostructures for the culture of neurons (collaboration with Daan Brinks’ Lab at the Faculty of Applied Sciences-TNW) as well as characterize them via SEM, confocal and super-resolution microscopy (collaboration with Carlas Smith’s Lab at the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering-3mE). The results of the project will pave the way for comparative studies involving diseased neurons (e.g. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). The starting date is 1st of October 2022.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PhD or Postdoc position on modeling of the atmospheric impacts of aviation emissions

Aviation emissions adversely impact the environment, contributing both to air pollution and climate effects. The projected growth in aviation emissions and projected decline in emissions from other energy and transportation sectors, result in aviation emissions’ impacts being increasingly important in both absolute terms and relative to other sectors. State-of-the-art atmospheric models that simulate the chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere are employed to assess the resulting atmospheric effects of emissions, as well as to understand the underlying processes and how they may evolve in the future. This position aims to utilise such models, together with observations, to extract metrics applicable in engineering and regulatory decision-making for sustainable aviation. Outcomes of this research are aimed to help guide decisions towards minimising the associated environmental impact of future aircraft and operations.

Deadline :  31 May 2022.
