(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries
The research project focuses on developing electrolytes for high-voltage lithium-ion batteries within an InnoSuisse project in collaboration with a Swiss industrial partner. Your tasks include electrolyte formulation, characterization, and assessment in lithium-ion batteries with a special focus on solid electrolyte interphase formation on anode and cathode. Our labs are fully equipped for battery fabrication and testing. State-of-the-art facilities include synthesis labs with fume hoods, gloveboxes, various synthesis reactors and furnaces, sputtering, evaporation, and atomic layer deposition facilities, X-ray diffractometers, Raman and FTIR spectrometers, electrochemical characterization including impedance spectroscopy, mass spectrometers, gas and liquid chromatographers, thermogravimetric analyzer, various equipment for the characterization of electrolytes, etc. Access to advanced electron microscopy and X-ray facilities is also available.
Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Bio-inspired Robotics (a)
We seek a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Soft Kinetic group (https://www.empa.ch/web/soft-kinetic/) which pursues a vision of life-like robot movement by translating biologically inspired mechanisms as we conduct experimental validation of animal locomotion using robotic physical models. The candidate has demonstrable experimental robotics experience and a keen interest in biologically inspired mechanics and control as it pertains to locomotion. The successful candidate will develop bio-inspired robotic systems leveraging skills in mechatronics and embedded systems, whilst incorporating principles and concepts from biology.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in Borehole Thermal Energy Storage Control
The Urban Energy Systems Laboratory develops models and concepts for the planning and operation decentralized energy system technologies based on renewable energy and innovative districts, including prototypes and demonstration plants. You will join the funded GOES project on “Geothermal based Optimized Energy Systems” where model and controller synthesis of a campus energy system with integrated borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) field, as well as abstraction of models/controllers to various settings, are key topics. This project is embedded in a larger international project under GEOTHERMICA and JPP Smart Energy Systems. Based on measurement data collected from a real BTES installation at Empa, you will develop and implement control methods in order to ensure a carbon footprint aware predictive operation of the integrated BTES system with an objective horizon spanning from real-time up to seasonal. You will develop methods to extract local features/learnings in order to abstract and transfer them other contexts. You will have the freedom to develop and execute your research ideas in close collaboration with our team and our external scientific and industry partners.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc position in data science for open and reproducible materials research
We are looking for a highly motivated and talented candidate with a strong background in data and materials science for a challenging PostDoc position to promote and facilitate the adoption of open research data (ORD) practices that comply with the FAIR data principles in the field of materials science. This project will use data from simulations and experiments to design, develop, stress test, and benchmark ORD practices that support and enable combined experimental and computational research in materials science. Our developments will enable general interoperability between experimental Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN), Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), and Workflow Management System software for managing reusable simulation workflows (WFMS). We will use openBIS as ELN-LIMS and AiiDA as WFMS. Through practical examples, we will show how their implementation can enable novel approaches to conducting research, understanding the results, and ultimately accelerating the discovery and characterization of materials. The successful candidate will work with experimental and theoretical scientists from Empa, PSI, ETHZ, and the NCCR MARVEL to define data types, metadata and practices for open research data that will allow successful integration between the AiiDA and openBIS platforms. The candidate will also work with AiiDA and openBIS developers to help code missing interoperability functionalities on the AiiDA side.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc on development of new low-emission cements (a)
You will work on a cutting-edge, applied science project funded by Innosuisse devoted to development of a novel cement type with reduced CO2 emissions. The project will be run in close collaboration with industrial partners from energy and cement sectors. With support of our senior scientists and lab technicians experienced in cement chemistry and concrete technology, you will carry out research on the novel cement: chemical characterization, microstructure development, mechanical properties, durability, etc. You will analyze the experimental data, prepare project reports and high-profile scientific publications (peer-reviewed papers, international conferences). You will coordinate the validation/demonstration projects that will enhance dissemination and fast acceptance of the developed solution in the market of cement and concrete.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc in data science on asphalt pavements (a)
You will first develop a database of asphalt test results, including data input protocols, curation, and web interface for data input approach that corresponds to open research data (ORD) practices and complies with the FAIR data principles. In parallel, you will work on populating the database with results from in-house tests, from online databases, and from research papers. You will use the data to build theory-guided machine-learning models aimed at establishing relationships between material properties at different scales. Throughout the project, you will learn the theory about asphalt and bitumen to develop robust machine learning models and you will perform laboratory testing that is necessary to populate the database.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on Regional inverse modelling of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions (a)
The estimation of national greenhouse gas emissions through the use of atmospheric observations and inverse modelling is a decisive, independent approach in the context of international efforts and treaties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Horizon Europe project PARIS (https://horizoneurope-paris.eu/), which brings together a high-level consortium of 17 European partner organizations, leverages on the interface between bottom-up and top-down approaches and strengthens the collaboration between atmospheric scientists and national inventory teams for the evaluation and development of national inventories. As a key partner of PARIS, we contribute to the development and application of national scale inverse modelling solutions. To achieve our ambitious goals, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc experienced in atmospheric transport and inverse modelling.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in the area of X-ray based multimodality development (a)
The Center for X-ray Analytics develops X-ray methodologies for understanding materials structure in life- and materials science. Our core activities in the development X-ray diffraction, scattering and imaging methods focusing on the evaluation of the structure – property relationship in applications. In the frame of an industrial project interfacing research and industrial needs, we are looking for a postdoc holding a PhD in X-ray based analytical methods, preferably related to X-ray diffraction, with a clear interest to enlarge to X-ray multimodalities, mainly imaging methods. Complementary knowledge in microscopy is desired.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position on Modelling of Lightweight Slabs with Permanent 3D Printed Concrete Formwork (a)
This postdoc project is focused on the development of the next generation of lightweight slabs with permanent 3D printed concrete formwork. The project mainly involves the development and validation of numerical models, with a small component of experimental testing. The project tasks include:

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Carbon-based Quantum Materials and Devices (a)
We are looking for outstanding candidates who are highly motivated team players, eager to learn, and have excellent English communication skills. Required qualifications include a PhD degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or equivalent with a strong background in solid-state physics or nanoscience. Prior experience with the growth and substrate transfer of 1D/2D materials, Raman spectroscopy, device fabrication and transport measurements are advantageous but not strictly required.

Drehgestelle sind multifunktionale Komponenten in einem Schienenfahrzeug, die mehrere Aufgaben haben: Sie übertragen die vertikalen Lasten vom Wagenkasten auf den Radsatz, sorgen für Dämpfungs- und Federungseigenschaften, steuern die Radsatzausrichtung, kontrollieren das Lenkverhalten des Fahrzeugs usw. Je nach Fahrzeugtyp und -kategorie und unter Berücksichtigung der Anbauteile machen Drehgestelle einen Gewichtsanteil von 30%-40% des gesamten Schienenfahrzeugs aus. Durch Optimierung des Designs, Verbesserung der Fertigungsmethoden oder durch Änderung des Materials kann deshalb das Gewicht deutlich reduziert werden. Im Rahmen einer Machbarkeitsstudie des Projekts wurde bereits ein Konzept für ein hybrides Drehgestell aus GFK und Stahl entwickelt. Detaillierte Entwurfs- und Analyseschritte sowie die Durchführung von Experimenten sind die Hauptaufgaben in diesem Projekt, um die Funktionalität des Drehgestells zu gewährleisten. Die Drehgestellkonzepte werden anhand der Einhaltung der Vorschriften hinsichtlich der Fahreigenschaften, der strukturellen Leistung und insbesondere der Gesamtkosten bewertet.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in machine learning for experimental fluid mechanics
The postdoctoral researcher will work on the development of novel machine-learning methods to analyze experimental data obtained from large- and small-scale laboratory measurements. The initial focus will be on convolutional neural networks, autoencoders for model reduction, and automation for application to classic velocimetry techniques (PTV and PIV, i.e., particle-tracking and particle-imaging velocimetry, respectively), as well as background oriented Schlieren measurements. The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to participate and support other activities of the laboratory that are related to machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher on mitigation of N2O emissions from biological wastewater treatment using isotopic constraints (a)
The project contributes to SCENE (Swiss Center of Excellence on Net-Zero Emissions), a joint initiative in the strategic area Energy, Climate and Sustainable Environment of the ETH Domain. SCENE covers a broad range of research areas related to net-zero. The open position is located in a sub-project focusing on the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment. Recent research reveals that the potent GHG and ozone depleting substance nitrous oxide (N2O) dominates GHG emissions from biological wastewater treatment. The development of effective operational strategies to avoid N2O generation requires detailed process knowledge. Isotope measurements of N2O are a powerful way to improve our process understanding and thus guide the development of N2O reduction measures.
