In this project, you will work together with our partner from the life science industry to develop fluorescent thin films with high durability. The project will include the development of carbon-based thin films as well as multilayer systems using high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). Despite this being an industrial research project, you will have the ability to publish related results in scientific journals.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc Position in theory and modelling of quantum spin phases in low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials
We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates with a strong theoretical background in Solid State Physics, Surface Science or Physical Chemistry to take up a challenging PostDoc position in the computational modelling of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials. In this project, which is strongly connected to the experimental activity of the laboratory, ab-initio simulation techniques based on density functional theory and quantum chemistry methods as well as methods based on spin model Hamiltonians will be employed to study the electronic and magnetic properties of nanographenes, graphene nanoribbons and nanographene-based spin chains and lattices, and to rationalize the results of scanning probe experiments related to them.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: a Scientist or a PostDoc (80-100%), responsible for the sustainability assessment of new production pathways for synthetic fuels
The “SynFuels” project aims to make an important contribution towards a mobility without fossil fuels. Over the period 2021 to 2023, the two Swiss research institutes PSI and Empa jointly search for practical ways of linking carbon dioxide and hydrogen to form longer-chain molecules and thus produce synthetic fuels. The open position will involve the assessment of the sustainability of the technological developments taking place in the technical work packages by using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). For this, you will further develop the LCA method to improve existing screening and up-scaling options and be involved in Life cycle cost analysis as well as the evaluation & benchmarking against alternative technologies in close collaboration with the scientists from PSI and Empa involved in this project.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: a Postdoc (80 – 100%) who will participate in the creation of a new digital ecosystem
The position will give you the opportunity to carry out research activities on the topics of GHG data management and uncertainty assessment. You will also have the chance to collaborate with many Swiss academic and implementation partners within the WISER project. Your work will be essential to provide simple, efficient and novel solutions to a community of stakeholders with interests in GHG assessment. More specifically, you will create a data repository (i.e. listing of data sources) for the WISER digital ecosystem, analyze existing GHG data in order to develop an ontology with other partners (e.g. ecoinvent, researchers in computer science), and propose options to define data uncertainty for the considered data sources. Within this SNSF funded project you will advance the performance of a recently developed laser spectrometer to simultaneously analyse four singly substituted and three clumped (15N15N16O, 15N14N18O, 14N15N18O) N2O isotopocules in gas samples. Together with a PhD student you will explore, how different N2O clumped isotope signatures reflect changes in substrate identity and reaction conditions.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: postdoc/scientist position titled: Physics-based digital human twins to help tailoring pain treatment to individual patients
With this position, we envision to develop physics-based digital twins to enhance therapy for patients. These digital twins are currently the missing piece of the puzzle at Empa in providing closed-loop diagnostics, using wearable devices, and to control our drug delivery devices in an intelligent way. Digital Transdermal drug delivery (TDD) is a non-invasive method to deliver moderately lipophilic drugs with a low molecular weight through our largest organ: the skin. Via this pathway, low-bioavailable pharmacological agents with a high first-pass effect are successfully self-administered in lower doses. The transdermal drug uptake through the skin varies significantly from person-to-person, compared to other administration routes. The reason is that the delivery pathway – the human skin – is very patient-specific. The percutaneous absorption kinetics depend on the patient and his/her bio-environment. Here, skin composition and its hygro-thermo-mechanical properties play a role, but also the patient’s metabolism and lifestyle, as well as environmental temperature and humidity. However, most transdermal therapies are “one-size-fits-all”. As an example, conventional transdermal therapy for fentanyl comprises administering a transdermal patch with a certain concentration for 72 hours and then replacing the patch.
